Xbox being HACKED!

What's up everyone, you're never going to believe this. I'm going to start off by posting a little link for everyone to get some background information off the bat.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-06-a-january-account-of-xbox-live-hacking-and-fraud

On to my story... Last night after playing a long, hard, tear jerking MK session, I decided to call it a night and search through the game marketplace for something to buy. The past Christmas, I had recieved quite a few MS points and redeemed them the day of, purchashing one game (with LOTS left over) and saving the rest for another occasion. I went to make a purchase, only to realize that I had 40 points in my account. I thought XBL may have glitched out for what ever reason, so I signed out/in and no changes.

I then logged onto the xbox website because I remembered seeing a "purchase history" link. Once loading that page, I had seen that there were multiple (when I say multiple, I mean 30+) charges for MS points (as if someone had bought lots of small DLCs for a sports games or something) as well as purchases with my credit card for MS points and XBL bundles.

I immediately called the bank, cancelling the card, and called Xbox to inform them of the situation. They managed to pull up my account and viewed the various charges, and proceeded to tell me that they would lock the account and launch an investigation.

Now, it's a waiting game, and let's be honest, I'm not too impressed right now. The simple fact that I PAY GOOD MONEY every year for XBL to be protected against stuff like this, and they haven't even done their job. Now I have the hassle of having to change all my information, and go through the hassles with the bank and xbox to get this resolved which is rediculous. A similar situation came up on the Playstation and look what happend, class action lawsuit.

I'm not the only person that this has happend to, and I would like to hope that I would be the last that it will happen to. I urge EVERYONE to log onto the xbox website, check your purchase history, and click the link that will take you to a more in depth view of your billing history. If you notice ANYTHING that is out of the norm, ACT RIGHT AWAY. Call Xbox, call your bank, post here, and lets get something done about this.

THIS ISNT PLAYSTATION, WE PAY FOR OUR SERVICES!

I believe if this has happend to you, do not let it go lightly. This is not acceptable in any way, and should never have happend in the first place.

This has been happening alot lately, I actually know 2 other people personally who've had it happen to them, Microsoft solved there problem and unlocked the account after about a month. Crazy times for sure,

So yea this is a major change in look for the site btw. On the topic at hand, I'd be wary everyone. Cyber attacks are becoming so common that the people involved are now called "hacktivists". I still don't follow why the consumers of a companies product need to pay the price because certain people get butthurt over it. When the hacking group anonymous said they were fighting for our freedoms, what freedoms were they? The right to modify your console and POSSIBLY lead to pirating? I think the majority of people who own consoles get them for one reason and thats the games. I couldn't give two shits less about modding my system. If I was that technically savy I wouldn't start with a console anyway. These kinds of things are going to increase in frequency as time goes on. That stratfor company was shut down for a month by a hacking group and they posted company names/addresses...hell even their shoe sizes if they were listed. Point is, these hackers are causing more collateral damage to innocent people by doing shit like this. I'm sorry you've been hacked bro, and I can understand the annoyance it causes. All that wasted time changing your info and passwords/waiting is a pain. When this whole situation does blow over, my only other suggestion is to never put your card info on the console again. Stick to buying the prepaid cards from the stores, I did after the whole ps3 fiasco.

Come on bro, don't be hating. The ONLY reason you pay for LIVE is because they don't "share" the same spot in cyberspace like ps3/pc does. The download speed is also faster than ps3's but come on.Money has nothing to do with the amount of security you have. I wouldn't wish for something like this to happen to someone because eventually it will happen to me and I don't need people rubbing it in when it does.

Exposed.

XBL should have better security measures for the fact that you're forced to pay to even watch Netflix.

First of all, who are you? I'm sorry I hurt your fan boy feelings, would you like a hug? Funny thing is, you're calling me a kid, and I'm probably older than you. Not only that, I was back on XBL within 10 minutes of having my other one suspended. Good try bro, maybe next time.

Like I said, if anyone is interested in taking action PM me and we can speak further.

The only flaw Microsoft makes that I see here is the ability to store credit cards on your account. It's hard to breach the actual security of Xbox Live, but you know what's ridiculously easy? Getting into email accounts.

I don't see what you are trying to imply with this statement.

If or when you do get your account back, be sure to change passwords on your email accounts and make it something less obvious/more secure.

If you wanted the entire MK community to be sympathetic and understanding of your situation, you probably should not make statements such as "
THIS ISNT PLAYSTATION, WE PAY FOR OUR SERVICES!". Just a tip.

Personally, I never use a credit card when I buy something on PSN. I use these pre-paid PSN cards that you can buy at your local gaming store. Does XBL have something similar? If so, you know what to do.

Your account shouldn't be validated with an email address when they already have a console ID. If you want to change consoles, there are plenty of ways to do that other than an email address.
This. Why do you need an email for a gaming console account? Why not just use an account name by itself? Now that I think about it they can access a lot of other shit just from acquiring your email attached to your account alone. Sorry about the paypal thing dude. Its a sick world we live in now. I liked being able to rent video games from the store like they were library books. Now you need to give them all your info and a dna sample before they let you do shit like that.

And yes I'm pretty sure the xbox cards sit right next to the psn/ wii points cards.

My account has also been hacked recently and they stole 125$ out of my paypal that wasn't even associated with my XBL account anymore.
For your idiotic response you can have an infraction that will expire in one year.

Right, they should have a card that you can buy at the store and type into your Xbox at home. There is 0 need for emails outside of them wanting more "Live" and XBL accounts to boast about.

wow so he makes an ass hole comment and i respond to it and i get the infraction

Yeah, probably not the best choice of words, but hey, I'm upset. i wasn't trying to knock the Playstation crowd, just pointing out that I feel we should have some more security. I appologise if I offended anyone as that wasn't intended.

On topic, I never compromised my email. I have no idea how they got into my account, but it sure as hell wasn't from something on my part.

Dave is right... i mean... using the cards you can get at walmart is really your best security in these situations. You live and learn...

Console dies, you're account goes with it if its only tied to a console id. Also, with account names, its yet another thing people need to remember. Ya you might not have a problem remembering them, but some people do, whereas you hopefully already know you're email. Plus they'll need your email anyway.

Anyway, anyone worried about getting hacked, PSN or XBL, make sure you've got a secure password. Mine are nine characters + symbols or more. I'll read the link now, but from what everyone is saying it sounds like you're password just got guessed or maybe brute forced.

Its never been safe. If you don't want your computer to be hacked over the internet, you have to unplug it from any network. Even then if you can physically access it, game over.

That's true, so many of my friends have taken down photos or especially professional ones because they're afraid someone will steal them(as people have done before)

I dont think this has anything to do with microsoft or xbox live. This is something you should take up with yourself, theres only one way somebody could have gotten the details to perform these sorts of crimes and thats through you. Wether you downloaded something dodgy, entered your details into a bad site, or just had a security breach somewhere.

Make sure you scan all your computers for viruses and anything malicious BEFORE you change your passwords, however you should consider using different passwords for all of your accounts with anything, so if one gets compromised the others are at less risk. Also remember whats tied to which account, maybe you could create an email purely for banking/payed services, and never enter this ANYWHERE apart from trusted and secure websites, and make another for signing up to forums, games and other more lighthearted content with. I would rather have my TYM account stolen and lose a few game profiles than lose my bank details and go through the hassle of canceling/investigating. Being protected can take alot more than just installing some anti-virus, be smart!

Btw, xbox live being a paid service has nothing to do with the protection of your bank details and things, theres data protection laws as well as basic human rights interests that say they need to do something to keep your information secure, and they are made to protect everyone, not just subscribers. Theres other benefits that justify paying xbox live fees, and playstation also have similar features available to people who subscribe, its just not mandatory for online play.

This has me worried. Since learning about Zaq's account getting hacked I've been weary of mine getting hacked as well. Now a bunch of people seem to be getting their XBL accounts hacked. Hackers will ruin everything involving the internet, fucking dick heads.

wow so he makes an ass hole comment and i respond to it and i get the infraction
He said that unlike PSN, he pays for XBL so he should be better protected from these kinds of things. How is that even remotely an "asshole" comment? How is that even a "diss" to PSN? Stating facts is now talking shit? Fanboys never cease to amaze me.
