Just because a game is old doesn't mean it's not good. A game that's 10 years-old is not even that old for a fighting game, not even 20 years old is that bad.

Even competitively. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is over 20 years old & 3 is the same age as MK9 & are two of the most beloved fighting games in FGC history. When Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite came out in 2017, it flopped in the community by veteran players & spectators alike & since Marvel vs Capcom isn't Mortal Kombat & sell 10m every game regardless how bad it is, it couldn't replenish with enough new players so it died. That's why Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 being included in this years EVO has so many longtime members & fans of the FGC so excited. Look at Super Smash Bros. Melee, it's over 20 years old & there's still major tier tournaments for it & played alongside the 5 year-old Ultimate & still has respectable numbers & payout (Last Major: 493 players, estimated at $7,395 USD pot).

It wouldn’t matter at all. MK is going to sell 10m anyways regardless of how if it plays like whether it’s MK11, MKX, MK9, MKD, UMK3 or something completely different again. Just it being a new MK is going to appeal to new players & grow the scene.
