What makes someone the best?

Ok all this talk has me concerned. I've been a part of the competitive NRS scene since MKD went online. Since then I've seen 2 MK sites go down and have been members of 5 different ones. I learned about online rage, tournaments, footsies, character loyalty and the art of counter picking. Although now things are getting unclear in one area...THE AREA THAT MATTERS THE MOST!

How do you know when someone is the best with their character or at a certain game?

My opinion may be disregarded but I formed my opinion over the experiences I have listed above. IMO it is simply this...

1) Tournaments are the only thing that matter!

Not money matches, not FUCKING ONLINE, and certainly not the sole opinions of those "leaders" in the NRS community. When did it become ok for online to determine who the best was. I play online less than 3 hours a week. Most of my time is in practice mode. When I get online I suck...always have. Its how I train. I just don't get it! Maybe people can explain this to me.

All I want to do is perform at tournaments and that is all ANY high tier player should care about. Money matches are a fucking joke...ISN'T A TOURNAMENT A FUCKING MONEY MATCH?????

Anyways. All these threads the past two days have been pissing me off. does anyone even read Zyphox posts anymore? I know I don't!

I... Being the best should consist of MU knowledge and how well you also do OUTSIDE of a mirror match.

But that's the thing, you could beat everyone and be the 1st at every tournament and everybody will say you're the best (and they will be right) BUT if someone came and say "I'm the best XYZ" and challenge you, saying "let's do a gauntlet" sounds like you are taking a step back, because he is challenging you, not the others but YOU, the one that beat everyone with XYZ. So if your XYZ can't beat his XYZ, having both of you the same tools, then, again, you could be a better player and in fact the best player, but you don't have the best XYZ.

But the challenger doesn't care about the others, he is challenging you for the title. It's like in boxing or wrestling, someone will challenging for your title (the best XYZ), and if he says "ok, but first defeat he and he and he" then nobody would consider he serious. Look at Rocky, he challenged Apollo to be the best, Mr. T challenged Rocky to be the best, etc. I remember 16bit claiming he was the Kitana of the world and he had the chance to fight Cd sr (at MLG I think) and won, CD sr didn't use Kitana I think (or at least not for all matches), so in my eyes he gained that title.

Again I will respectfully disagree with you bro. Mirrors prove only half of what you want to prove. Tbh I don't think there is such thing as being the best. Just the most relevant at the moment.

i don't know how it would work, but i challenge Thy @HoneyBee to a Gauntlet MM...... or maybe not for money idk its up to you. Gauntlets are tricky, not saying i don't trust the players playing in the Gauntlet, but what's stopping someone from being like yo Zyphox i'll let you win 10 - 0 if we split....... there's already a lot of Collusion in our community. Anyway we can do this then i guess, just know that 2nd player through the Gauntlet will always be at Disadvantage so we should play a FT2-3 to determine who gets First? i'm not even sure how this works lol

I think you would have an advantage since you actually play these people we would have to face in the gauntlet often but I'm up for it, it would be fun. I made this tread cause I want to know what the standard is and shoot for it.

I always thought it was tournament but these challenges keep coming up, distracting from what matters, and it kinda pisses me off.

I'm all for hype but let's not pretend that a MM determines who is best. Sitting in a sweaty, loud and weed filled hotel room is no place for a serious match.

Casuals cool, but for FUCKS sake people! After a tourney I want a stiff drink and some fun games. Not chores to fulfill someone else's shortcomings.

To be fair, in Rocky Apollo picked Rocky to fight him because his original opponent broke his hand and couldn't go, and none of the other top contenders were willing to take the fight on short notice. Apollo looked for the guys first who had first defeated other worthy challengers.
Similarly, with Rocky 3, you get an entire montage of Mr. T knocking people out and working his way up to being the #1 contender

Outside of extraordinary movie circumstance, title shots aren't handed out unless you earn your place

I agree. I don't take Money Matches as seriously as I do tournament...

With that said, I still wanted to prove to King that I kould beat his Batman with Arrow but he didn't give me that chance.
