What Happened, NRS?!

Again, you (and others) seem to gloss over the part that says "very few complaints compared to mk11". I also find it hilarious that this very thread lists things that were present in mk11 as well - "we hate having a reset button in practice mode"? Really?
The criticisms in the 17 pages of that thread run a lot deeper than a reset button.

And it’s hard to see how a game that was complained about nearly constantly can be “very few” compared to anything. It was nonstop — too broke, infinites, hitboxes, weak anti-airs, NJPs, OP DLC, costumes, patching too often, breathing hurtboxes, being unbalanced, too many armored launchers, “NRS doesn’t care about the netcode”, tester advantage.. Just one crisis after another for the entire game’s life. It was booed on the EVO stage. These are definitely rose-colored glasses.

I find this to be quite an interesting comment, since I actually saw very few complaints about MKX during its lifespan compared to MK11 - even more interesting is the fact that MK1 is basically MKX with no run button and kameos: you now have the same breakneck fast 50/50s that loop into themselves with most of the cast, only with half the armored moves MKX had, and now kameos can actually give characters 50/50s. Yet, so far, this is currently considered one of, if not THE best mk gameplay to date.
MKX was a mess at launch, a lot of players did in fact hate it with a burning passion at first (myself included) but it got so much better. Where things changed is when NRS eventually turned it around with a complete overhaul & rollback netcode. When did one last massive overhaul balance patch but it was so half-assed so a lot of characters that truly needed to get balanced unfortunately weren’t, it’s the only NRS game besides maybe IGAU that the mythical “One Last Patch” could actually fix a lot of its problems & balance issues. So yeah, It wasn’t a great game at launch but in the end it became one.

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
Glad MK1 didn't get fighting game oty award at the Game Awards. While I would have loved for them to win, they didn't deserve it at all with this game and SF6 is a better game in every way
yep

this was good in order to send a message to NRS and WB ..... MKX won a goty, MK11 Afetermath won another, but this one, MAYBE next year , with the story expansion, could win, however, next year Tekken 8 come up, so is possible that MK1 will not win any GOTY at all, so ..... that would be very shameful at least, hehe :p

Despite MK being my favourite franchise, and I love the series, SF6 winning GOTY23 was pretty much deserved, because their story mode is better than Invasion, and overall, this street fighter overcome the previous one and now is the best street fighter ever released so, is totally fair the recognization by the game awards event ;)

And Tekken 8 will win too if MK1 doesn’t step it up.

It's not that we hated, but the button was in between movelist, and return the game, so one would constanly hit that option, if it was in a hurry, after that they moved further down if i remember correctly, that was me sorry:laughing:

NRS will need far more than an expansion story pack to win FGOTY.
A Massive overhaul is needed not only to story, features such as well as gameplay designs.
If i worked at NRS at this moment, i would shift my focus to push an UMK1 version, but in a much more polished state, and added features that are missing, revised training mode UX, and refresh the neutral game with some new ideais (test them in a sandbox first), before actually releasing or announcing everything to put out there next year.

There is a position for Battle director at NRS, but requires Barchelor degree, and shipped out at least two games previously, think this is the reason why the position it's still open, these are rare.

They could at least bring in ppl to put a sandbox whithin NRS so they could test it out

i dont think there should be a rush to overhaul anything gameplay related,i mean unline mk11,this game is actually fun and has a fun combo system, alot of the horrendeus mechanichs and quirks of mk 11 were removed/improved.
The main isaue with this game is everything surrounding the gameplay. If anything needs to be overhauld it should be invasions. On top of that ofc adding all the expected features a fighting game and its online play should have.

Additionally The other very big issues is the outright evil monetisation of this full price triple A game that has awful f2p mobile bullshit in it.The premium shop must be completly removed or the dragon crystals should be attainable in a clear and fair way with respect to the playera time.

Also they should look at the godawfull skins they have as unlocks in this game, the greater 90% of these union of light/order of darkness skins are trash,so they should try and deasign something cool that doesnt cost 10 dollars.

If theres anything the gameplay aspect needs other then ofc continouse balance revisions and fixing the kameo diversity/direction problem, its new strings and specials.Alot of the characters just feel dry in the strings department and it can feel a bit boring/redundant.

One if the obvious ways to me is through excess seasonal coins. I know they do not want to give dragon crystals away, but they could make it so once you buy everything from the seasonal shop, you get a certain amount of dragon crystals for any you have left at the end of the season.

I don’t agree with this either. Everyone always thinks that all a previous NRS game needed is “one last patch”, then everything would’ve been perfect. If that were true, how come the last patch these games actually got weren’t that mythical “one last patch”? All the “one last patch” would do, even in an ideal world, is fix the issues that either were created or persisted through the previous patch (or patches). But even if that happened, new issues would arise, as they always do. This isn’t solely due to some sort of incompetence on NRS’ part, it’s just the nature of having a large roster in a fighting game and trying to make all the characters somewhat balanced combined with how these games function and NRS’ balancing decisions and philosophy. To clarify, I’m not saying NRS holds zero accountability, my point is that there’s no evidence to suggest “one last patch” would “fix the game” or make it significantly better.

Aside from that, I still find it wild how many people think MKX was complained about less than any of the other NRS MK games when that just doesn’t map on to reality. At the absolute worst, it was complained about at least as much as the other NRS MK games. I think what people are misinterpreting is that it was also championed a lot, maybe a bit more than other NRS games, during its lifespan. And if these people also really liked MKX as well, they’re remembering the praises more than the complaints.

All that said, and this isn’t directed towards anyone in particular. But there’s no reason to rewrite history. We have a lot of the threads from MKX still here on TYM, and I could easily find hundreds of tweets about MKX during its lifespan.

Aside from all that, if you loved MKX, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. No one is saying anyone is wrong for liking MKX during its lifespan or looking back on it now. Just that it was hated by the majority of the competitive community or at the absolute best it was for sure a polarizing game.

I would fix the issue of the input being worse, the horrendous blockstun.
would definitely do something about the micro ducking, floaty jumps, and riggid hit stop animations.
Some characters feel alright awful without kameos, though i'm not a fan of the system itself, but there are better ways to handle that.

I will start by saying that I have been an overall fan of the series since MKOG1 in 1992. I have been playing it alongside Street Fighter since then. While I have always had issues with certain things in the series (beside MKvsDC), I was always overall positive about it. When it comes to MK1, yes the gameplay is an improvement over 11, but honestly my compliments stop here. This will be a rant and honestly feel free to skip it, I'm just sharing my current feelings about what used to be one of my favorite series ever.

I fucking hate MK1, and since I started in 1992 I honestly can't believe I'm actually saying this about a game in this series. I will also say that yes WB is dogshit, but we can't only blame them for this mess. NRS has been dogshit for a while, and Ed Boon has been a lying clown for a long time. Yes there are a lot of things that have definitely been affected by WB, but you can't sit here with a straight face and say NRS is innocent.

I'm tired of NRS constantly making garbage decisions with the direction of these games. Having already said that MK1 plays better than 11, I will also still say that the gameplay STILL feels sluggish and stiff compared to the competition. This has been the first experience in quite a long long time since I played MK and SF basically around the same time (since maybe the 90s really). Having experienced SF6 in June, and MK1 in September I honestly just can't do it anymore. Yes I do understand for many it's become part of the charm, but I personally can't do it anymore. It's just rough to look at in motion and to feel when playing. I'm not even talking about GG, KI, KoF, Tekken, I'm strictly comparing it to the other fighting game that just came out 3 months prior. Every time my buddy and I sat down to play MK1, after a few matches I would always think to myself: "Why am I wasting my time with this game? Honestly rather be playing SF6 right now".

NRS has gone fully moronic with the story too, what was promised to be back to basics with this game, more grounded etc... and the story having started with a lot of promise in MK1, we went back to the same garbage of time travel and multiverse that people have had enough of and have voiced their opinions.

I'm also tired of NRS' lack of consistency with character designs, the last few games I've been losing attachement to my favorite characters because every new game they look very different. I look back at Chun Li in say early 90s, and I see a picture of her today and I recognize her right away. I can't say the same about my favorite MK characters anymore.

Invasions mode is just terrible, absolutely awful. It's almost like they designed it purposefully to make us hate our lives, that's how I feel. The worst single player experience in any fighting game I have ever played. If the devs truly cared about the customer experience, you can't tell me with a straight face they thought this would be fun.

The lack of basic features in a fighting game in 2023 is also nuts man. How do you release a game 3 months after your biggest competitor that raised the bar, and still have basic issues like:
-No crossplay
-No filters
-No lobbies
-No online practice mode
-No training while matchmaking
-No public replays
-No friends lists
-No blacklists
-No social hub
-Worse netcode than only cared to that competitor, but to your own last game.

How about the consistent garbage PC releases? NRS and WB make so much fucking money but refuse to have NRS properly make a PC version? Why do they have to out source it and Capcom doesn't? On top of that, Ed Boon consistently lying before every launch how everything is better this time, everything is this and that, yet every single one of their games in the NRS has had a dogshit PC launch.

I can keep going but I will stop here. Yes we can blame WB for a lot of things, but NRS has been consistently making decisions with this series that to me make it become worse and worse. I'm honestly done with the series until NRS make massive changes to practically everything. They need to leave WB behind and find someone else, they need to get rid of Ed Boon, Tyler, and every other moron that green lit so many things with MK in the NRS era. It's a shame really, been overall a fun run since the 90s, but I can't waste my time any longer with this series that's consistently going out of its way to make a worse player experience with every launch.

$100 on an unfinished, shitty, beta version of a game. God damn.

Hopefully one day they can turn the series around for me, but they need to get rid of the rotten core team deep inside. Until then, I say good bye to what used to be my 2nd favorite fighting game series. This whole launch has been such a fucking embarrassment after seeing what SF6 and Capcom cooked up. To those who aren't sick of this direction more power to you honestly, I'm actually jealous. But it is what it is.

Looks like Colt is online today so maybe they're trying to gauge feedback on the combat cast. (Stop spelling everything with a K. It's been cringey since '98 and draws mockery from every other community)

He looks like Quan, he sounds like Quan, but what's all this tentacle shit? No rune traps? No projectile based mixups? No trance? It looks like you invented a totally new character and gave it a Quan skin. I was excited to play him based on legacy information (you know, that thing that exists in every other fighting game series) but now that he looks like a villain in an anime porno, I'm not really feeling it.

We're months away from release and a lot of the quality of life promises that were made before release still haven't been delivered on while total player numbers have tanked on Steam. You convinced people for years to stop buying the PC version because NRS was unwilling to support it, then you promise us an equal experience to consoles so we'll buy in again, and instead of bringing the PC port up to par, you dragged every console down to PC level.

If I want to play fighting games with my friends online, I have to play a game besides Mortal Kombat. That's fine because SF6 is amazing, but it's a shame that we don't even have the option to play MK. If I wasn't waiting for Ermac to be released, I'd probably have dropped MK by now and waited for the game to get fixed over the next year or so. I also have a sneaking suspicion that Ermac is going to be some brand new character that we've never seen before with a red ninja skin, so the likelyhood that I'll be disappointed by his release is pretty high. You're training me to think that if I really liked a previous version of a MK character to not get my hopes up in ever being able to play them again because the MK series has an identity crisis so the game has to be totally reimaged every 3 years.

I hate it but Ermac will probably just be zombie Jerrod, like he is in the storymode.

Quan's kameo in story has rune traps. It looks like Quan the character will not. It looks like the playable characters that also show up as kameos will have different movesets. Since Ermac's kameo has force lift, I'm afraid Ermac the character will not.

For all I know, Ermac will shoot butterflies out of his fingertips and summon dinosaurs. They might make him a puppet character like Kenshi. Either way, I'm almost convinced he's not going to play anything like MK9 Ermac, which is the version of the character that turned me into a loyalist. A mid range keep out zoner with meh buttons/armor but huge punishes. The fly cancel playstyle from MKX seems to have already been adopted by Sindel, so if you liked him in MKX, you're probably not going to get that either.

In the age of social media behemoths like Discord and Twitter, the fact that Paolo still browses TYM for feedback is commendable, especially when every other NRS employee as well as high level player abandoned this website a long time ago.

As far as Quan Chi is concerned, he lacks the trance and rune trap, but he looks like he plays how you expect Quan Chi to play. Obviously, tier list discussions and effects on the meta will be another topic for another day. He definitely looks cool, though.

This is sadly the core issue and build-in within the game design from the start i guess, WB is faulty here at least for the will to do games with live services in mind.
Another game will suffer from this, owned by the same company aka Suicide Squad.

I felt robbed by NRS with this game, really. The lack of optimization for the pc port didn't help too.

Yeah and it sucks cause i love the gameplay, and the base roster(though small) is incredible.

i dont know what the chances are of the premium store being removed or an inclusion of a fair ability to gain crystals but what i do know is the moment i run out of the ones you could have earned in game i am not going to buy a single one ever, and i would suggest others to do as well, cause its the only way to fight this bs.

So does it bother anyone when it's Round 2 and the announcer says "Round 2" and we can move around before he says "Fight"? Idk if it's just me, but it throws me off sometimes lol.

This the first time I recall we can move around before the announcer says "Fight".
