What's new

What criteria made you choose your main(s)?

Their differences were a lot better shown pre-new era. The cyberization process is brutal and torturous. Skin is peeled, eyes removed, jaws wired shut. You have one person who went through this willingly and loves it, and the other who forcefully had their humanity taken. What made them interesting is how they went on after it. Cyrax tries to pull back any semblance of who he used to be and Sektor becomes an isolated weirdo, fully insane.
According to MK11, the brain is just shoved into a cyber body per Frost's fatality. Booooooorrrriiiiiiing.

Yeah. Cyrax is the sad Robot. Sektor is the angry one. I got it right the first time.

In fact, the robots sucked so much that only Cyrax was playable in DA as a hidden character. Sektor was nowhere to be found until what, Armageddon?

They suck. That's why they were so easily replaced in X and were just jobbers in 11. Frost had more personality and did the whole robot thing way better.

New Era Cyrax has a strong moral code and a definitive line she won't cross. Whereas New Era Sektor is ride or die for Noob and is cruel and mean as fuck. She gives no fucks about a Liu Kang.

To me the main starts with rule of cool. Are they badass, do they look cool, is there some interesting thing about them design or story wise. This is really the biggest thing for me like I like unique gameplay, but I'll play a rushdown(Bo' Rai Cho, Zangief), I'll play a zoner(Shang, CE Sagat, Midler*, JP).. probably enjoy it more when the character has defined weaknesses that you need to overcome. Or some mechanic that you need to learn like setups or zoners with specific ranges. But IDK it really just comes back to coolness and gimmicks, like I play Alisa in Tekken because I like her command grab where she takes her head off, and Panda because it's a Panda! But definitely don't like playing a character that people view as top tier, I do have ego about people looking down on the character or trying to take something away from you.

Once you've played a game ton though the characters start to become "functions" to me. I find the FG's I enjoy the most and have played the most are ones where I play a bunch of characters. Which is what I used to do back when I was a scrub playing MK9 online or older games locally and would just switch character every match.

Coolness > gimmicks

Life was wasted on you.
Mortal Kombat - everyone
Mortal Kombat II - Kitana
(Ultimate) Mortal Kombat 3 - everyone
Mortal Kombat 4 - everyone
Deadly Alliance/Deception/Armageddon - everyone
MK9 - Kitana
MKX - Kitana but dropped her 'cause she sucked in vanilla and I never picked her back up after her slew of buffs. I mained Kotal and Jason (Sun God and Slasher respectively).
MK11 - Skarlet but she ended up being dogshit and I switched to Kabal but never went the route of Air Gas Blast.
MK1 - Nitara but she was buns in vanilla and then I switched to Reiko (thank you, Rewind) and have stuck with it since.

Injustice 1 - Catwoman but ended up not liking her for long and entered a character crisis which resulted in nearly dropping the game. Then I saw Perfect Legend vs Chris G (Doomsday vs Green Arrow) and was sold on the rushdown zealotry.
Injustice 2 - Darkseid even though he was utter dogshit.

I miss being a straight Kitana main/loyalist. I've lost my way since the MK9 days, I reckon. I really should pick her up again since she's pretty good in MK1.

Kung Lao, and pure for his gameplay. Especially for the dive-kick and teleport moves. It allowed him to be very mobile and offensive.

  • Dive-kick: Tool to get in your opponents face and good for movement.
  • Teleport: Tool to keep your opponent guessing and punish projectiles.
* Hat-spin: good anti-air and wake up attack.

Unfortunately Kung Lao has never been the same as he was in MK9 and MKx. Imo his peak in terms of gameplay.

“He was unique for his mobility and spontaneous offense”

Something I wish to see return in future MK games. Dive-kick should be a “get in your opponents face real quick” tool and teleport should be a tool to allow more mobility and potential mix-ups. Both air and ground teleports should be allowed and at-least one button to get an attack (and combo) out of the teleport.

Got bad news for you bud…. MK is mainstream.
Mainstream as in the most popular characters in the roster.

he means that what ever character is played the least or is thought to suck the most, he plays and makes work.

Darkseid downplay in 2025? You hate to see it.
