What's new

So since marvel stole the ultimate name, should MK go a different route?

Rathalos

Play Monster Hunter!
Ultimate mortal kombat still sounds the best, but with ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 or UMvC3 (I'm sure you UMK3 fans love this) it might be in NRS best interest to not go the ultimate route since normal people are REALLY stupid.

Hyper mortal kombat?
Turbo mortal kombat?
Mortal kombat tournament edition?
Mortal kombat game of the year edition?
Mortal kombat magical ninja fun time?

Or just suck it up and pretend marvel doesn't exist.

Also.
Scorpion on a motorcycle.

Marvel has been using the word "Ultimate" as a prefix for many of their characters for a long time. They didn't steal anything. As for the name of a new version of MK9 if they ever do some out with it, i don't really care what they call it. They could call it "Mortal Kombat: Happy Fun Time" for all i care as long they make it worth it with new characters and features.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat. They used Ultimate waaaay before Capcom.

And when they do:
- Further balance existing characters
- Buff the roster to about 40
- Add two additional X-Rays the player selects before a match to help stop counter-picking
- Switch Enhance Moves from holding block to "Change Stance" button... remove "Change Stance" altogether
- Keep Story Mode, but add a second Story Mode to continue the tale
- Add two fatalities for each fighter, one brutality (must have full meter and win each round), and respect/friendships
- Add another bar to the meter - X-Rays still cost 3, Breakers cost 2, Enhanced cost 1. Would make enhanced more viable.

New UMK game : "Ultimate Mortal Kombat: Capcom stole the Ultimate name" :sniper: .
Or "Earth-1610 MK" (Earth-1610 is Marvel Ultimate Universe :p)

I agree with all of this except adding another meter bar. Also,we should get animalities.

Scorpion on a motorcycle.
@Rathalos
Ghost Rider is 20 years older than Scorpion, so perhaps we should say Scorpion is Ghost Rider without a motorcycle. :)

I think this would be a perfect opportunity for Boon to troll and call it
Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition or Mortal Kombat Turbo.

Few Features it would need:

-Netplay utilizing GGPO
-A more intuitive Training Mode
-Random factors eliminated by rewriting the fighting game engine code from scratch( assuming it runs off the MK vs DC one)

MK: Friendship is Murder would be an acceptable title as well

Disagree with your bar statement, if someone has a full bar they automatically have 2 breakers, you have to start 2 combos just to drain there meter, and they probably have full bar again by the time you can. With the system now when they break they cannot break again already.

FIGHTAN GAHMS!!!
dude, theres so many things that need to be changed to make MK9 ITSELF a better and more fair game that it would end up an entirely new game by the end instead of just an "update".

first things first they should totally switch to hitboxes instead of 3D hitting. i was so sure SF4 would benefit from a 3D hitbox or whatever is used for that style because 3D models still are awkward when used with 2D hitboxes. but MK9 is proof positive that Hitboxes are just the best way to go. a 3D game built as a 2D one just doesnt cut it and leads to weird shit like Ermacs attacks having nebulous ranges, and since it gives better and more consistent frame data it gets rid of most infinites (or so i am told).

needs to have physical attack "trading". when i heard about how trading was done (apparently its random at the start of a match then jumps around players between frames) it just sounded completely bonkers and it leads to exchanges where certain pokes can just flat out fuck you up and theres little you can do about it. having ranged attacks not trade is perfectly fine to me and i totally like it AS IS. but the way physical attacks work is wrong. exchanges should NEVER be based on a roll of the dice in a tournament level.

ALOT LESS NEGATIVE EDGE!!! for the love of all that is holy this needs to be fixed and done with. whats the most basic thing about a fighting game? the fact that it controls WELL!! if your doing the motions and getting something completely different it can ruin your chances of winning on just that exchange alone. and this goes double for MK9. it makes using a stick abhorrent and almost completely useless except for those stalwarts whove done their best to get used to it. the fact that using a simple DUX command only works when it wants to is all the proof you need to know this needs to be fixed.

a BETTER SPECTATOR MODE. you know why we dont have alot of online streams for MK9 from TYM like SRK does for SF4? because in KOTH (its version of endless battle) the operators cant just set a machine aside and forget about it. they HAVE to play, and that itself fudges up any ideas to hold some of the same events for PS3 or 360 for MK9. what needs to happen is have a simple 15-20 timer and if the challenger or current king dont respond at this time then it moves on to the next person. thats a simple fix and then we can have those online Justin.tv steams for everybody to see.

BETTER ONLINE with ALMOST no input lag. the biggest problem with MK9 online aint even the "gamestate lag" but the "INPUT LAG". now no online is perfect and there will ALWAYS be lag of some kind or another to bother people. but if MK9-ultimate-10 can at least get SOMEBODY to make a netcode that has little to no input lag then itll all be worth it. because for a good deal of players wanting to play with real people, alot of them want to learn characters and matchups and at its current state it just DOESNT WORK. some characters play fine offline and some play like absolute SHIT online. the fact that moves have different properties and priorities from offline to online undoes whatever good could come from learning online. if we want to foster better players in cities where theres little competition for them then they too deserve a better gateway to do that in.

and of course a BETTER training mode. a trainer that shows off as much detailed information as the system will allow is paramount to a good tournament community. frame data, hitbox data, interaction data, how much life it takes, where the hit comes from, and of course a PROPER record function for the CPU to test moves. whatever they can fit in it i totally think should be put in it. im all in the belief that its the game's duty to teach new players high level play, not just community built around it.

other than some of the big (change to hitbox from 3D hit modeling, trainer changes, negative edge, trading, better netcode) and the simple (better spectator mode in KOTH) i think MK9 is solid enough that it doesnt need to change to heavily. i like the way it plays and i think its a great game when some of it elements cant be abused to oblivion like it was MvC3. but thats the nature of things, this is a first step for MK players and some changes are necessary if not outright mandatory if they want to continue making MK "for the tournament player". it definitely sells enough to the casual player alone so i dont see why this cant work. so im hoping they see this and do their best with what they can do.

why is this even being discussed? mk9 JUST came out. we don't need ultimate, turbo, hyper or anything else for at LEAST another year.

Ultimate route is fine, I doubt it would really make a difference. Most people know that there was an Ultimate Mortal Kombat already...

Also, considering how much I've already played this game, it wouldn't bother me to get a revision sometime next year. I generally consider that I got my money's worth when I spent a few hundred hours in a game.

The only reasoning behind them NOT doing this, is the difference between MK and SF and MvC, is that this MK has a LOT of features and a really involved story mode, and received a lot of praise as a result of that. SF and MvC rely on the fighting itself without all the fluff, so releasing a revision of the same game but with added fight features and extra characters makes a lot of sense. But with MK.. if they were to release a new version, would it still have the same story and content? And would something like that sell well enough to the average MK fan to make it worthwhile? I'm not so sure.

*I'd* personally buy it because I just like the fighting itself, I'm not really interested in story mode or fluff features. But I think MK appeals to quite a variety of players.

If it was a capcom game only it would be a theft, but it makes sense for a Marvel game. I don't doubt there will be a Supreme Edition of MK9, Boon has been dropping a few hints, including adding story bits, if there wasn't another MK game till MK10 it would be silly, Capcom is smart, they know the fighting game wave of popularity could end tomorrow, get in while the gettings good.

Possible names for the new MK9:
Mortal Kombat ON STEROIDS... amirite?
Mortal Kombat Fuck Arcades
Salty Mortal Kombat Exposed edition

I wouldn't mind if they made one but it seems unlikely at least for awhile, if ever. The game just came out not too long ago and all the DLC hasn't even come out yet....i enjoy this Mortal Kombat though so I'd support anything they do lol

Do not release a Ultimate version! People already paid 70$ for this when it came out new less then 6 months ago. Patch it if there are balancing issues, DLC for new characters. Do not go the capcom route and release 3 different versions of the same game. It confuses the casuals and insults the regulars.

There will be another version and I think this time, they will (hopefully) Get the online right. They have seemed to have given up on trying to fix the net code and now with the compatibility patch screw-ups with the hit boxes. its not looking good for the current mk9. Plus, they are in contracts with GameSPy (BLAH) and making a new title will get them out of the contract.

I emailed their [email protected] about the online issues and 4 weeks later I got a response that "Its currently under investigation" :(

No because RAW numbers dont add up.

MK9 sold over 2 mil, there is no way with all the changes they could make that would make MK10 appealing enough to meet or even match those numbers. People at least spent 60 to buy the game and an extra 20 for all the DLC characters plus 5 for the costumes so 80-85 bucks spent on MK9 (potentially) Could they really make add THAT MUCh to justify a brand new game MAYBE an update like AE, but a brand new disc? sounds like bad news, Improved netplay would be a plus, but that can be patched. GGPO, is what FGC wants, but it uses up way too much RAM and you are limited to what the console has, do you use the RAM for the actual game or the GGPO, having that implemented into a console game is gonna have to wait a generation when consoles get faster.

Yeah they could throw in some MKV and on people, but do are people demanding guys like Tanya? or... someone else who i dont even know. MK0 scratched so many itches for casual and long term fans, to throw the baby out with the bath water for a new game, just seems like bad business, especially when most of those changes effect such a small percent of players

I think it was dumb for Capcom to continue to galvanize their player base and I def dont want to see that happen for MK.

its funny that people think online, hitboxes, game mechanics (trading hits), training mode and all that can be patched.

big news: It can't be patched.

Tim what? We know the time line in which this new MK took place. People fail to realize that they have to look at this game as if MK never previously existed. The time line will continue with MK4 but not the games title.
