Match-Up Discussion - Smoke Smoke's Mu's

GOOD DRAGON

Awesometacular
I genuinely think that Blood God Kotal has more of a chance of escaping the corner
Yolo grapple? S1 if he tries to jump, 11 or d1 or NJP as soon as he tries to approach past the clone? Block high? let him d4 all he wants from that range? you can play it smart i think you don't have to be a sitting duck also you can back dash his overhead in the corner and punish him

I received your invite on psn , next time we both on we should run smoke sub and see if it's really that bad
I'm down man, you really need to get that F12 for the free clone to get a good position for jailing. Otherwise, Smoke will get out and blend you. (F12 and cloning out; for the clone not to come out...)

It is better this way
The patch made this match up even shittier. Smokes shot at winning pre patch was to vortex Sub the entire game and just guess right. Now he doesn't mix as hard.

I think it is a 5-5. Being able to phase through the projectiles or ex tele for full combo on reaction of the slime ball makes things work out in Smoke's favor a lot. If Reptile has the momentum however it can be a pain.
lol I'm asking as someone who never bought the game due to timing of the release but still plays casually with friends. My buddy has a reptile that's an absolute pain in my ass and since I don't have the game I can't lab the matchup. He never uses forceball and he's unpredictable. My issue is that I love phasing but Reptile's strings move him so far that I can't whiff punish and there's seemingly a lot of strings that leave reptile plus on block since I can never seem to land a hit afterwards. It's a matter of my just buying the game and figuring it out but since the game is all but dead I've been hesitant to do so.

I have watched some reptile match footage and it appears my friends plays him very atypically.
I use phase to close ground from full screen if they try to zone heavy and if they try to rush in b21 is a great string to catch the run in. My personal feelings, I would still buy the game. I love MKX and will continue to play it even after it is "officially dead" to the tournament scene. I feel like there are still a ton of things to learn and develop in the game.

So I bought the game. Eesh. It's not like playing MK9 from day one and learning with everybody else. I have a thousand other variation's mix ups I'm learning on the spot while playing in unreactable lag. I immediately regret this decision.

I'm sorry. :(

Lol it's all good. I actually picked up Cyrax too because I hate myself. Everybody counter picks with Smoke it seems like. I have no idea how to apply pressure with Triborg in general, though Cyrax seems especially awful. Got double flawlessed by grandmaster and then survived the ensuing suicide attempt.

I also just discovered that I'm learning all the wrong timings because I'm playing on a 4K tv with some severe input lag. Tried playing on a regular tv and I was pressing buttons way too soon. Maybe that's why I'm having trouble reacting online.

If you want to play competively i would advise investing in a monitor
Just to make conversation since it's all but dead here, since I bought the game and studied the matchup I give my buddy's Reptile fits. We played for a few hours and he only won maybe three or four matches. Frame data and better familiarity with my own character helps a ton. Though I have actually moved into cyrax since I have more time to invest and he's a pretty practice intensive character. As Triborg in general I really struggle against Kitana, Tremor, Kenshi, Shinnok and maybe a few others. I'm not high level but even so-so players who main these characters give me fits. I fucking hate Kitana. And Jason can eat my ass, too.

Jason can be tough. He has some really good tools after the patch. You need to stay up close and don't let her get her game going. Certain variations of Kenshi give me trouble as well.

Grandmaster absolutely destroys Smoke. Unless you're getting mixed, I don't see how you would possibly lose (even mixing isn't that much of a thing after the patch). Smoke has almost no options in the corner, the second hit of b21 whiffs when crouching for a full punish, Sub punishes smoke bomb after strings with jump over punch, and he can even punish the less punishable moves like f34.

What does Smoke have in that match up to compete?
It's typically the case of "Could be 5-5 if". It's definitely a 6-4, though. I can't see a 7-3, Smoke can still get going, his tools are there to destroy someone. The problem is that he's the textbook offense that GM was designed to break.

This is one sad thread for smoke players. Tried to play against couple GM's online got my ass kicked in their favor and they don't even know any fancy combos, just utilizing basic strings/skills and that's it, though I've seen a match of REO playing as smoke against Tom Brady as GM sub, and REO was super good, no matter that Tom is a great GM sub... So may be it is all about learning all the stuff GM can do and that's it?
