When I played I enjoyed building a battlemage, relying on One handed weapons and using a restoration spell in my other hand. Sometimes I'll use destruction for mid-range battles or conjuration magic to summon things. I think hybrid classes are the way to go.
The first class I built when I actually started playing was a pure two-handed build and boy was that terrible, not only did I need to be close range but I had to rely on healing items as well. My battlemage build had a lot more utility.
