Bring him back as the black sheep of the heroes. Have him be resentful and spiteful of Raiden (as I'm sure most of us really are at this point) and then eventually have him "turn" on him about halfway through the story. I say "turn" 'cause it'd be completely justified in Liu's case. Raiden was responsible for all of Liu's friends dying (even though they're mostly all back now for whatever reason). Once that happens, Liu sides with Kotal Kahn or whoever simply to fulfil his own agenda; take out Raiden.

Sektor's ending in MK9 is at least semi-canon now, I wouldn't be surprised if Liu's is as well.

Fire God Liu Kang got a big approval by many MK fans. Not only is it a good direction for the character, he also looks cool.

Who knows... maybe NRS decided to go with it and make part of MKX story about how Liu asks the elder gods for godlike powers and they grant him said powers. They might even go with the "Raiden is an incompetent fool" route... which they seem to be in the comics.
He'd certainly move out of the goody2shoes he usually is... which is essentially what people are sick of him.
The MK legacy series also had an evil Liu Kang who got a lot of approval. The fans have spoken and hopefully NRS listened.

Everything here seems to check out. Raiden is an idiot and Liu Kang is tired of him messing up so he asks the Elder Gods if he can be given Raiden's job of protecting Earthrealm. It makes sense.

Becoming a fire god is exactly what Liu Kang needs, at least it will bring something interesting to the table. He's looked the same since MKII (not counting zombie Kang).

Hope he has a sick re-vamp of his Dragon fatality, I'm a huge fan of that one. Loved MK9's version, hopefully the dragon will be more detailed and the actual transition of morphing from human form into dragon will animate better with next-gen technology.

Thats what I thought too, but everyone said headband = liu kang confirmned. But it looks more like hes wearing a shirai ryu tunic like in the comics. Lets also not forget that pic boon posted of the motion capture people doing the kenshi-like telekinesis pose
