I understand what you're saying and yeah that's usually why. I grew up with sarcasm as well, but there is also that difference when it's sarcasm and being facetious. One is just more intended to be kind of a dick as opposed the the other being more playful joking. Trolling has just become something more than sandbagging your opponent or playing a joke on a friend. People always looking for the level to which they can take things and have it be socially acceptable. But it more often than not ends with the same outcome. Not everything can just be okay or acceptable because a people or person said they were, "just trolling".
The word facetious has always been a favourite (all vowels in alphabetical order), so points there.
That said, I maintain that the problem here is more that some people are toxic (regardless of comedic stylings), further fuelled by anonymity.
A person can absolutely troll a person/group without it being “low”, but mostly tbh; I just don’t like the sentiment “lowest form of wit” for the aforementioned reason. Even more so from generations that revered the pun and canned-laughter lol. There’s just no such thing.
Remember “dead baby jokes”? They’re definitely not high on the classy-comediometer. Or maybe they are? Ask any chef I used to work with...
It’s as simple as this: There are assholes like me, that know how to behave (eh roughly) in various public environments, even when anonymous. And then there are other types of asshole. Period.
Now ima put Team America on in the background... got assholes on the mind.
