Negativity In The FGC

I thought this be a good topic to discuss and that's the elephant in the room....Negativity in the FGC. Regardless of what fighting game you're playing some type of negative shit is trending, and that's bad. It's like, its the "cool" thing to shit on people but expect the scene to thrive? HOW!? I've noticed this since Uncle JBeezY came into the scene and I'm seeing an ongoing thing of people being annoyed, miserable, and downright hateful. I'm not talking about difference of opinions, I'm talking about the trolling, constant complaining, constant tearing each other down and for what? What purpose does that serve?

I refuse to accept negativity in any scene! That's never the energy I personally surround myself with. My mother always taught me, God Bless her soul, that love always conquers over hate. Which is why I like to look at things in a positive light and try to be optimistic. Life is too short and at the end of the day we all love video games!

Do you feel this pattern has been going on for too long and something should change? Or are you just so used to it, you're just numb to it. I already told you my plan, and that's just to show love more than hate.

Let's have a discussion. The floor is yours.

There is always going to be negativity in the scene. Fighting games are so personal and independent that dominance and arrogance just kinda come with the package for most that are actually trying to be the best. I will say the scene is in the best state it’s ever been. Our numbers are great, we have new games coming out or current ones being updated, and an influx of new players in happening.

I mean, thats understandable. I don't expect everybody to be butterflies and rainbows like moi, but there's a difference between having a competitive spirit and being toxic. If this scene is doing better, then we have a LOOOOOOOONG way to go!

I think it's the one-on-one aspect that drives it. There is no rationalizing defeat like in other games like "I lost cuz my teammates just suck" or anything like that. Nope, you just got outplayed. That triggers people. And then on the flip side you have the asshats that bag and wank after winning a nail-biter that could have gone either way. It's nothing to do with the FGC really. People suck. Especially when they're protected by the blanket of anonymity, sitting behind a screen. There are always exceptions of course. But for the most part, this holds true.

Yeah I feel that. Its does have alot to do with this generation. Very insecure, very sensitive, yet very....there's not a nice way to put it....but the new generation of bitches that sit behind a screen behind an avatar talking shit because they know they cannot be touched in real life. Its sad actually.

Things need to change for the better. I mean, I came here and out of all the scenes this was the most friendly and I will always say that.

You’ll run into negativity no matter what field you are in whether it be in fighting games or any other aspect. Especially in a competitive environment where your win or loss is controlled by you and you have nothing to fall back on for your losses except for being outplayed by your opponent.

It’s mainly online. People are overtly toxic and negative online. Like, I’ve met the worst online trolls you could ever possibly think exists offline, and offline they were nice and/or quiet. Something about the internet and not having to be next to people brings out the worst in people. It’s why I have in the past and am currently taking a break from most social media. Toxicity rubs off on you no matter how positive of a person you are.

I don't mind the negativity the FGC brings (injustice included). For example, there's been an issue regarding the payout on in IPS on twitter (players having their payment delayed by months). Things such as this need to be aired out so that these issues can be resolved.

My problem is when there is a lack of constructive criticism regarding the game, as opposed to general blanket statements. Not saying if you're a top player you need to be a cheerleader, but you have to realize that you are the face of the community, and a lot of what you say holds weight and will be parroted by the masses.

I see a lot on twitter regarding injustice were funky hitbox collisions occur (which happens in a lot of games believe it or not - just look at the "email harada " memes Aris makes on commentary) were top players say "they're done with this game." Or how some will post how they would rather be playing DBZF (great game by the way) but since they've already invested time into this game they just got to stick with it.

If the top players of the scene view the game as shit, can't be surprised when people outside the community view it that way and you get treated like the red headed step child. It all comes full circle. Look how anime games have taken over Evo, that came with a community that had a strong passion for their game. Same with smash.

As controversial as this sounds, I would rather have a top player leave the community and play a game they love as opposed to stay with a game they hate and continue to rant about it. That way, players that do actually love the game can be the face of our community.

It depends on where you go. I've been into Blazblue since I got into the FGC, and the negativity is a different kind. Go in any Blazblue discussion group and say something like "So I was thinking of playing Mai" and you'll be bombarded with "TRAP" and "GAY" comments. Mention you are a little pissed about Senran Kagura characters showing up in Tag (not confirmed, but SUPER likely) and you'll get a bunch of people furious that you don't want softcore porn characters in a tag fighter missing a ton of big names from the other series.

You see less people upset about the games in the anime communities, partly because the games tend to be more solidly made, but mainly because we stick with them. Yeah, UNIST is Top 3 in balanced games right now (the worst character in the game was Top 3-4 at EVO), but the original release was as bad as Injustice 2 at launch. But people are just getting into the game now, so people are seeing it at its best

Hahaha awww bless your heart. Anything I see on social media about the FGC I place it here for discussion because those discussions are everywhere else besides here. Why not bring discussions here on this site ?Question mark?
For sure man, good stuff, it’s what the site is for!

Just saw both of your threads next to one another and recognized both topics and thought it was funny. No shade!

This is actually the reason I always keep my tag name's simple and as close to "Tony" as possible and generally have any profile picture as my real-life ugly mug. Reminds me to continue being myself and not turn into some alter ego online.

Nothing wrong with some trolling it's all love and people who do troll get trolled hardest in return

this is way worse in other scenes. Team game players can be triggered as hell and team up with their team to hate on everyone else. FG players are more "alone" and in that way depend on their actual rivals to organize a community, which actually forces them into forming a scene of only moderate conflicts and more harmony (online scrubs are a different thing though).

Here's the problem... People like drama. Feuds actually bring interest and there's more casual viewer appeal if there's some level of controversy or backstory that gets someone emotionally invested about the competition.

Also, as a general rule. Normal person + Internet + crowd + relative anonymity = total fuckwad. That's science.

there wouldn't be a FGC without negativity. The majority of the people that are drawn to competitive gaming are personalty types that thrive on conflict and the gaming culture and sporting culture has a long history of "shit talking". We are talking about a past time people put 1000s of hours into to try and be the best.. is it any wonder that slight problems with the game gets hate, as it is perceived as a roadblock to their competitive goals.. or they get beaten.. you blame the character they played, arguments over characters as yours is op according to them... blah blah blah. Basically the core idea of this being a competitive scene leads to conflict and arguments. It will never change and if it did, there would be no esports.
