Linear in the sense that a part of games is interactivity and navigating environments. You can pace a game as fast or as slow as you want usually. If a game says go left, you can usually choose to go right for a bit before it forces you to go with it. With movies, there aren't really sidequests or ways that the viewer can deviate from the experience they show you. Whereas games gives the player agency which movies don't do. Plus games have the option of telling stories 4 - 50+ hours long, whereas a movie can't do that.
Yeah, but not fighting games? They're usually just a cutscene, then a fight in this specific location and background. Then a cutscene etc. There is no exploration and side quests, it's just scene, fight, scene, fight which sounds like the perfect kind of game to go into a movie.

Agreed on the world building, the Scorpion and Sub Zero rivalry in particular feels very simplified. I guess Bi-Han is just an asshole in this universe.
...I think while shang and bi han discuss about the prophecy, it was made quite clear that Bi han was not an a-hole attacking the shirai ryu. He was doing Tsung's work , killing Hasashi's family and ending his bloodline in order for "the prophecy" to not be fulfilled . It wasn't just senseless bloodshed

I think MK95 had the potential to be amazing movie considered the whole premise, some of its bits & a lot of it’s elements were ripped off from Enter the Dragon. Johnny Cage is just Roper, Liu Kang is Lee, Kitana is Mei Ling, Han is Shang Tsung & Bolo is Goro.

I think the issue with MK95 is a lot of it is hokey as fuck & somethings were just plain dumb, like Reptile: He had the best fight but the whole way he turned into a ninja then the worms & bugs that came out of his body is just straight bizarre. Some of the liberties that they took in that movie were great, I actually liked Scorpion’s living spear. I think a lot of the fight scenes were better than the new movie but I think it’s the way they were shot like other epic/cult classics martial arts movies of that era. If MK95 had the effects of the new movie, it could have been far better. I actually liked Christoper Lambert as Raiden & the liberties that they took with him was neat (funny enough the guy who played The Krugan in The Highlander voiced Raiden in MK: Defenders of the Realms).

In the end, I think Paul W. Anderson’s main problem was the same as Simon McQuiod’s: They were two new directors pushed into a massive movie far too soon when someone else with more experience would have done better like if Kevin Tancharoen decided to stay on as director.

That would still make him an asshole, since we all know in the game storyline it wasn't even Bi-Han that killed them.

Every time someone farts, a demon gets his wings
Disappointing....bad acting, some good fight scenes and some really bad ones, Cole is just boring and makes no sense, the cringe moments (Liu Kang saying „Fatality“ was super cringe), No tournament!!!!

Reptile....or whatever that things supposed to be was cool tho, Goro was ok, Mileena underwhelming.

Kano was funny but that’s supposed to be Johnny Cages part.

Kabal was on point visual wise

4/10

"Mind Over Matter" I dont mind, and X dont matter
The movie turned out better the game as final product lol!

I was really skeptical, but in overall it turned out really well. It means we might get another round. God, I hope I get that Kabal skin man!
Some characters died quicker then the communication from NRS with the fan base, which actually was a good thing. That Reiko cave man, and that bat-like Nitara.... man. It was a shame to see Goro die fast like this, mean they could've gave him some respect. Raiden imo turned out like a cosplay kid from a comicon festival, but other then that, it was neat.

I gave it a 7/10.
Loved the action, but hated most of their acting. Shang Tsung was a huge let-down and that Cole Young guy hasn't grown on me in the least.

Somewhere in Outworld there are cybernetic ninjas teleporting around, attacking each other with laser nets, flamethrowers, and missiles. I want that movie. Instead, we get the human equivalent of vanilla in Cole Young.

I almost wish we could get something more like the Crank movies, just sheer batshit lunacy and near nonstop action from start to finish.

As others have said, fighting game stories are utter nonsense, so why do they try to depict them as gritty realistic romps? Give me ninjas fighting in a supernatural tournament against 4-armed monstrosities and I'm sold. I don't need character development, I don't need a moral lesson, I don't need anything else: the movie is called Mortal Kombat so give me that in a tight 90-minute package. Sorry, but I will never take colorful ninjas as seriously as this movie wants me to.

One of my pet peeves is action movies that refuse to show action. Another is when a character with insane abilities just keeps throwing the main characters around instead actually attacking them. This movie unfortunately did both to a staggering degree. If you have to shake your camera and cut every 2 seconds to make your action interesting, you need a new director, editor, and fight choreographer.

I almost lost it near the end when Scorpion just keeps taking his mask off. I believe he took his mask off 4 times in 4 consecutive cuts.

I also lost it when Sub was spitting out dramatic threats in Chinese and Scorpion was just like, "I have no idea what you're saying but fuck you!"

I love the actor who plays Kano. He's the pharmacist on Superstore and plays a giant dick in a few episodes of Wrecked. I hope this gets him the attention he deserves, as he's hands down the best part of the film.

The acting. What acting? I loved hobo Raiden. Good casting for Scorpion. And Kano dominates every scene he's in. Poor Sonya...

I didn't understand how Sub was using his powers in fights. Like, he just kept grabbing people and turning blue and they would scream. Sometimes they could get out and sometimes they were helpless. They should have just stuck to ice weapons. Did he even shoot a single ice ball?

I loved that they included actual mechanics from the game in the fights, like when Liu sweeps Kano and then does a hop attack. I saw Lao using MK11 strings in his fights. I was very sad we didn't get to see Kano do a ball attack. That's the kind of nonsense that could have really upped the entertainment value of the movie.

Overall, it was not the steaming turd I expected, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

Up rock incoming, ETA 5 minutes
I did think it was weird (unless I missed a line somewhere) that Jax had nothing to say to Sub Zero considering what he did to him.
You can always nit pick dialogue but the two dumbest moments in the movie for me were:

Jax: "I've got a score to settle! Leave Reiko to me!" (Jax.. what about the dude who ripped your arms off?)

And

Jax to Raiden: "How come you didn't save Kung Lao"

Raiden: "I am forbidden to participate"

Later, Cole to Raiden: "I thought you said you couldn't participate?"

Raiden: "Lmao that's what I wanted you to think"

You can at least tell it was made by people who know and like the game. Not gonna write a full review but what jumped out at me was

Actress for Sonya was god awful

Kung Lao and Goro dying like bitches was a terrible move

Sub and Scorpion were good I guess but we should have seen other Lin Keui characters and even set up Kuai Liang for sequels to give Bi Han more context. Scorpion should have been in the damn movie more, as well as Quan Chi and the Neatherrealm. I did like that when Scorpion and Cole were fighting SZ, Bi Han stripped off his armor so it was all black, then his corpse being taken away by Shang Tsung's black mist sets up Noob Saibot.

Kano was good.

Johnny Cage needed to have been in this movie. Really bad move for him not to be.

I liked Liu Kang a lot. Raiden felt off.

Cole was boring and his power was literal plot armor, Sub and especially Goro should have been able to shred him instantly.

The fight scenes were good! The story its self was no worse than the actual games aside from MK9 tbh. A sequel has excellent potential if it centers on the cyber kin kuei takeover introducing Kuai Liang SZ, an actual tournament in outworld, Johnny Cage being in and very good, Noob Saibot (the obvious choice seems like new SZ and Scorp team up vs Noob) more screen time for Liu Kang, and some way to bring back Kung Lao.

6.5/10 for mk fans, 5/10 for everyone else.

I thought Jessica did fine, she does look like Sonya just the lines she had to work with were...... what lines... with no backstory on SF nor any good fighting scenes but from a casting perspective i though she was fine and did fine with what she had to work with, way better then jobbers like Reiko, Nitara.. thou they didn't have any lines at all so that can be viewed as a positive in this movie lmao.

I can tell she tired so I'll give her that. Her dialoge was horrific too. But the delivery on some of it and Sonya being in a lot of the scenes that were more low budget and dumb feelimg didn't help.

Feel bad for guy who played Cole cause he was obviously trying but Cole is so boring. He should have been Kuai Liang or another MK character.

To be honest if you have terrible script it doesn't matter how good of an actor you're. It will be bad no matter how much he or she tries. There is no remedy for bad script in a movie and if you add poor editing, very uneven fighting choreography than .... it is what it is. That's why i said Jessica was fine as a casting choice for Sonya but it doesn't matter coz the script made her look bad most of the time and she had a lot of screen time which only added to the dissapointment with the lines she had. We all know that Hiroyuki Sanada is a great actor but it didn't help in many scenes and in fights with Sub Zero coz he had terrible dialogue lines or did stupid things (like let me take off the mask 4 times in the middle of the battle coz... reasons).

Most of the actors in this movie can do better i have no doubt in my mind about that but... you work with what you get and what they got here was awful.

We all die alone. So love yourself before you go.
The fact some characters didn’t even have any lines at all. What a wasted opportunity

You’re doing way too much. No one is saying we don’t enjoy MK. We love it. That’s why we’re on the site. Just because YOU loved the movie doesn’t mean we have to love it as well. I don’t think the movie is as bad as some people say, but it’s definitely not as good as you’re making it seem

Relax. It’s not that deep. People are allowed to have an opinion.
