Pretty cool, nice to see the quality of MK has increased since MK9, I've always loved all things MK but damn some of the old comics and the second movie and even the cartoons seem like they were made to be sold in a £1 store lol.

I really like the art however the "script" is terrible. They stuff you with names and characters just to change the subject a second later. Hope the next ones are a bit less of a clusterfuck.

They mention Daegon a LOT. I wonder if he will be one of the villains in MKX? I fucking hope not. He was so goddamn bland in Armageddon.

I liked the comic so far, and I really am digging Sub's MK3 unmasked costume redone. It looks fucking sweet and I hope it's an alt for him in the game. Scorpion finally getting over his rage is nice to see too, hopefully he's like that in game.

Not likely. From what we've seen already he's pretty angry, also there's a synopsis of issue 3, I believe, which results in Scorpion's new clan being wiped out again and Takeda being possessed. Pretty sure this will reset Scorpion back to his vengeful self

I'm also really intrigued by the Sub-Zero/Raiden stuff. Especially with the quote in game "Fear their powers Raiden" maybe he's referring to the Kamidogu? Or something else entirely?

I liked what they had, but yeah, I follow suit with most of the other posters in here, that the first issue was a bit lack luster.

I didn't like the fact that they just dropped you in with no context. That they name dropped every page seemingly, only to hurry through scenes and ultimately give you nothing. I mean, I know its the first issue, and really they gave me more than I was expecting (I thought we were going to get like 10 pages), so I'm happy it is here and that it exists, but I guess I just want more.

Questions I have...

  1. If the "Netherrealm War" (presumably MK4) is a central part of this timeline, how long after that event does the comic take place? The opening pages start with "many years ago", so presumably the narrative starts in the present day "25 years later" after MK9 time line and is projecting backwards. So is this MKDA territory? MKD? Armageddon? Keep in mind that MKDA was at least 5 years after MK4, so I'm just curious with what all this lines up with.
  2. So was Kenshi a member of the Red Dragon? Hsu Hao said he "betrayed" them, and, well, his colors have always lined up. Could that be possible?
  3. If both Subzero's died, who is the one in the comic? They make it seem like it is Kuai, but yeah... I can't say I'm happy not knowing who this guy is.
  4. Deagon can "swallow" souls? What? Since when?
  5. Kano knows how to use a Kamidogu?
Again, I know this is the first issue, and so they can just give you everything. I willing to keep up and follow along to see how this develops, but it already seems like they are going to take their me. Don't et me wrong either, that is a good thing, but inner brat is acting up; I want it all now! Dammit.

1. The timeline is a few years after MK9, and that "many years ago" i believe it was because the game will expand 25 years in the future, so at the course of the game(and maybe even the comics) things will advance a lot.
2. Kenshi was never a red dragon i think, he was just infiltrated all along, he was working with the special forces from the get go.

You might as well mentally erase the entire old timeline. There's MK9, there's 25 years (this), then there's MKX. I think the Netherrealm War will probably be a big part of the games story mode, namely all the 5 years later scenes.

So was Kenshi a member of the Red Dragon? Hsu Hao said he "betrayed" them, and, well, his colors have always lined up. Could that be possible?
The answer's right there in the book, he was deep cover in Red Dragon hunting Daegand his cover got blown.

If both Subzero's died, who is the one in the comic? They make it seem like it is Kuai, but yeah... I can't say I'm happy not knowing who this guy is.
It was never clear that Noob died, he just fell into the soulnado and disappeared, a feat which previously Scorpion did and survived. I think it's pretty obvious just from this writing that Shinnok lost whatever the Netherrealm War was. Which means pretty much anybody who was on his or Quan's side could have been "rescued".

Deagon can "swallow" souls? What? Since when?
Daegon's an Edenian demigod, who knows what he's convinced his followers he can do.

Kano knows how to use a Kamidogu?
Kano's been living in Outworld for years, I'm sure he's heard about it. Also, Kano's a brigand but he's not an idiot. He rebuilt Kabal, he taught Shao Kahn's army how to use earth weaponry. He's survived for a ton of years with the entire universe trying to kill him. Hell, he probably did his own cybernetics. He's probably one of the more intelligent characters in the series.

This is a quote taken from Shaun Kittelsen from the interview with MKSecrets:

"You’ll see minor characters returning from the past as well as new characters created just for the comics, but the main focus will be on characters who appear in MKX."

They're focussing a hell of a lot on Kenshi...

The old story beats are dead in this timeline I know, I just want to know for context purposes where all this fits, and who we can anticipate seeing. In the interview I just linked to above, Kittleson said he made list and cut characters from it if they didn't fit in the time frame. I just to be as up to date as I can.

Ok. Yeah. He was a Red Dragon in name, but was never really one of them. From Hsu Hao's perspective, he did betray them.

You make some good speculative points, and before the comic I was thinking that the "new" Sub was going to be Bi Han anyway, still, the comic gives no clues as to who he REALLY is.

Also, unmasked Sub was a renegade; he left the Lin Kuei, thus was why he didn't dawn his mask. In MK4 he put the garb back on to honor his Brother, and ultimately the Lin Kuei. Again, what gives? If this is Bi Han, did he defect from the Lin Kuei or something?

Daegon's an Edenian demigod, who knows what he's convinced his followers he can do.
True. Deagon was highly underdeveloped in the past game. He could end up being a pretty powerful being. Here's hoping they do him right.

Kano's been living in Outworld for years, I'm sure he's heard about it. Also, Kano's a brigand but he's not an idiot. He rebuilt Kabal, he taught Shao Kahn's army how to use earth weaponry. I don't put anything past Kano. He is hella resourceful to say the least, so I see where you are coming from. Still, it's a Kamidogu. Only the Gods know about these things, and it's not like they go around talking with people about them. Does this signify that Kano has some real connections even though Kahn is presumably gone for good? I mean damn, if that is the case, then is/will Kano be a major player in his own right?

He also said though that not all the characters in the comic, I presume minor or major, won't be guaranteed in the game either. It is a real toss up on who we will see, but it would be cool if he were in. Honestly, I call Kenshi being killed at some point in the comic, and his death being the catalyst for some other character's ascension.

I'm pretty confident we'll be seeing Kenshi in the game, which I don't mind. If he doesn't make the cut after all of this i'll be pretty surprised.

And this basically an origin story for Takeda. He could basically be the Robin to Scorpion's Batman. :p

It's still very confusing, the identity of this Sub-Zero (these Sub-Zeros??). It's clear in that final scene that we saw Sub-zero's scar origin, making him Kuai Liang, that and he is working for Raiden?? However, they also mention him working with Quan Shi in the past, so, maybe Bi-Han? Or was that just the Red Dragon minion mistaking him for his brother? Geez, who knows??

One more thing, based in the comic, it DOES look like Takeda COULD BE Forest Fox?? Honestly, I don't know anything anymore, but it seems like he'll be trained by the Shirai-Ryu. I know that the main argument for him not be Forest is the skin tone, but, that could be just an "art" issue. Not only that, but Takeda IS half Thailandese, so I think that dark skin tone kinda makes sense for him too.

Does anyone on here have the comic through the Comixology app? I got the first issue on Google play but I want to know if the Comixology version has any of the cinematic sweeps and such that I've seen in a few of the other comics I've read there. GP doesn't have them, you just get the 2 pages side by side, which is fine, but I want the comic to be presented to me as cinematic as possible, if possible.
