As king said there's big money tournaments online so no not pointless. The online is pretty bad though.

You can use online to learn things about the game. You can get a good idea of how people use other characters and etc. It can just give you a better understanding of what's in the game.

If you're looking to play serious it's going to really suck. The game is not essentially the same game online and it can be very frustrating. Things that don't normally work end up working and etc. The main reason I bring up playing serious online is esl. If you're not playing for money online I wouldn't take it too seriously.

Honestly though some people consistently place and do well online so it must work for them. I think most of the guys that do well do have some sort of offline scene or competition as well but I could be wrong.

Pointless? No. I mean you at the very least get the basic ideas, concepts, around the currently established metagame. The most common strings, frame traps, and Mix ups. The problem is the nuances that lie underneath the surface of the at face value game.

If you're an O.W. & go to a live in person offline event. This is what will happen. You'll respect things that online has taught you is safe on block. You could punish or in some cases FULL COMBO PUNISH but you don't due to the fact you have been trained mechanically something is safe. Same with the opposite. You could throw out something because to your knowledge. in 0% of all 4000+ of your online matches has (Insert string or cancel here) been punished. However offline YOU get bopped. I learned this from fighting DJT's fisticuff J.C. at Momocon a few months back. It felt bad man. I was like: "OOOH this gone" be safe... then b1212xxwhatever and then I never saw a life lead or a round win again. That and offline some opponents will do similar combos that they do offline but will nail you for about an extra 5-9% since the online latency forces them to do less damage due to online adjusted combos. Like with Quan Chi Warlock: Offline I'll do

B234, NJP, b2xxDB1MB, b2xxtrance, back dash ~ Jip f212xxdf1(scoop) 41%.

Due to lag.. I'll never hit the NJP so I adjust it to

B234, b1xxDB1MB, b2xxtrance, back dash ~ Jip f212xxdf1(scoop) 39%.

My Lasher Takeda for latency adjustment I lose an anywhere between 3% to 4% per combo. If I hit you with 3 combos and you're still alive... I hate you so much adjustments. Its bad man.

And we haven't even discussed if you're playing online on a non optimal TV/monitor setup. Adjusting to both.... on the fly? Better get AllState cuz right now you aint in good hands.

To be fair the first paragraph isnt an online problem. The ONLY way you are going to get anything from online is to play a long set against a good player and then go STRAIGHT to practice mode to sift through what would work offline and what wouldn't. You should know what you can/can't punish and if you don't that is 100% on you for not putting in the proper prep time.

You can't hit a B324, NJP?
:DOGE

But in all seriousness, I agree. I like doing the corner carry and hard knockdown combos with the 141 at the end to get a setup as Sorcerer, and god help me if I can get that run cancel online. Basically, Sorcerer is not an option for me online.

Some of the best NRS players started out as online warriors (SonicFox, Forever King, Jupiter, Honeybee, etc.) so no it's not pointless. You get way more MU exp and knowledge of different playstyles playing online. If you have an offline scene then that's a plus. Could the online be better? yes it could but it still has its benefits especially if u don't have a scene.

After going back to playing online I will say that it is a completely different game and u won't learn shit if u play randoms. It's best to play people from TYM or someone who understands the game at a high level. If you find the right people to play with and train with them on a regular basis then I say online is worth it.

You can like me and still criticise me.

Check your own connection, find people who have good connections aswell, done.

Cerently I played someone who's connection felt acutally like offline. Yes, it's lagging often, but it's not like you can't play games without lag.
Either your ISP/WB servers are in your same building, or you just don't have enough experience offline. Literally everyone in this site, online or offline warrior disagrees with you. Do you think we're all delusional?

A lot of this is why after Summer Jam, I'm probably going to just play other titles. MGSV is coming out, gonna playthrough GTA and go back to Last of Us cause online ruined a fun game for me.
I haven't touched the game since Evo, sadly. Which is a crime, since it's really fun. What is the point? It has some of the worst online I've ever experienced. It did absolutely zero to prepare me for Evo, and I dont have a local scene for this particular title.

Like you, I'm calling it GG on MKX. When all of the other fighters I like play quite acceptably (or even well - how about that!) online, why waste my time? :(

in order to get better i would need to play much more matches.

my scene only organizes meet-ups biweekly and that's if they bother to tell anyone

online can't connect to shit so can't have matches with online peeps. i'd even take a full on lagfest if it means actually getting a fucking match through the "Connecting to Online" screen.

hmmmmmmmmmmm guess obviously i should try out for esl right? that's what everyone else is saying!

@Mitsuownes - I'm pretty sure Europe overall has a better internet infrastructure than where I live, and NA in general barring certain areas.

BTW my connection runs fine for everything but MKX (and lately Rising Thunder but that's a port issue that's actually really freaking weird)

As with everything in this game, it's about 50/50 :DOGE

But on a serious note, online can be a decent place to learn matchups or get some experience with some characters' tech, but you're more likely to get d3'd to death by a subpar Ermac who will then leave after one win and send you a "get wrekt" message. A decent match with a good connection, a good player, and any kind of respect is about 1/100.

Also don't you dare fucking bring up ESL as a reason to play the garbage that is this game online as if I can even compete from ps4 or pc.

Yeah online aint the best, its nowhere near KI, but it is playable. Often times i feel ppl are option selecting when they lose and blame it on the netcode when they just played bad and didnt block anything. Ofcourse they never complain when they win.
If the netcode is really unplayable then why are the top pros still taking all the ESL money?

To be honest, it really is pointless though lol, the only thing that pisses me off so badly are the people who have bad connections and everything is lagging, then have the nerve to think they are "owning" me when i lose a few times or once, i tell them each time "online isnt offline" so i let them have thier moment in the limelight and just take my loss its pointless to argue anymore like mk9 days lmfao. Tbh noone likes losing to scrubs and mkx i seem to lose to them all the time. Thank you nrs

I used to be like many people in this thread who hated MKX online, but I recently figured out a nasty tactic to win 99% of matches that a lot of people don't know about. So when you find your match and it takes you to the character select screen, what you wanna do is pick Shinnok and tap right on the dpad to select Bone Shaper. Literally takes about 15 minutes in practice mode to learn and you will body everyone. No longer will Ermac's mash d3 into overheads, not longer will you struggle to punish -14 moves, no longer will people be able to disrespect your shit.

You now harness the power of forward 4. God bless you fallen elder god.

I wish you all good luck with your online endeavors, I'll let you guys know if I find anymore secret tech.
