Well, most of the roster isn't really based much around fundamentals. Most of them play differently from each other, so I'd suggest just picking a variation or character that you think looks or plays according to your style.I'm not saying I'd main a particular character, I just want someone to help me get the fundamentals/mechanics down, so that I may explore a more complex character in the future.
I think its best if you avoid 50/50 and vortex heavy characters, yeah you'll get wins but you aren't really learning from it. . If you're looking to learn how to pressure these are great to learn: Kung Lao, Scorpion, Reptile, Johnny, Liu Kang, Tremor, Kotal (sun god), Cassie (Plays neutral a lot more but has good pressure), and Jax. If you want to zone: Kitana, Kano, Ermac, Mileena, Quan, Sektor Liu, Predator, and Shinnok.I'm not saying I'd main a particular character, I just want someone to help me get the fundamentals/mechanics down, so that I may explore a more complex character in the future.
Thanks for the input. Im just gonna pick someone based on design, lol....or just play everyone to a degreeI think its best if you avoid 50/50 and vortex heavy characters, yeah you'll get wins but you aren't really learning from it. . Almost every character in this game can be played scrubby and still get wins but you need to be especially careful how you play Shinnok, Sektor, Quan, Mileena, Liu Kang, Johnny, Ermac, and Cassie to a degree. These characters can be played random and still somehow get wins like quan's random njp or mileena's random ball rolls, or johnny's depending on his fake 11 f2 and 113 mixup. Rarely wakeup it sucks but its the only way you can learn how to block and make reads on their offense. If I still had mkx I'd play against you and help you out.
thunder god took it in the ass the first balance patch and while displacer is decent, might not be a good place to start to learn MKX. MKX is a weird fighter in that cheese and 50/50s are extremely powerful so a char that can build meter and has50/50s + on block ex moves, does not require you to learn literally any defensive mechanics to get the job done. Altho johnny has been mentioned multiple times I would not try him first because the last balance patch kinda did a number on RC heavy chars. Also (if I remember correctly) also took away his armor on ex nut punch. How come know one mentioned Raiden? lol. I like his style.

Reptile can be both in the Zoner and Pressure groups. He is an all-rounder, In fact he is more in the Zoning part then the pressure part. Yes he can both Rush and Zone and he has pressure but his Zoning is the better part. Also Kano can really Zone only in the Cybernetic Variation, and Liu Kang is also in both the Zoner and Rush groups at least in Flame Fist, although he is more in the pressure part, same thing for Dragon's Fire.I think its best if you avoid 50/50 and vortex heavy characters, yeah you'll get wins but you aren't really learning from it. . That is true about reptile, he's a very solid character that can teach you a lot. Kano can zone in all variations to me his projectile is really solid although rushdown is the way to go with CT and Commando. I also put Liu in both groups. I miss mkx sometimesReptile can be both in the Zoner and Pressure groups. He is an all-rounder, In fact he is more in the Zoning part then the pressure part. I think it's safe to say that Kano in CT and Commando can Zone but only to a very limited degree unlike Cybernetic, but you are right in general. That is true about reptile, he's a very solid character that can teach you a lot. Play Raiden then he's good too. Displacer was pretty good I heard but I never played with any good ones. She's growing on me... But Raiden has swag lol
I'm biased towards buzzsaw laou. He's has a bit of everything. Good footsies, 50/50, set play, stagger pressure, air control, etc. Can teach a lot, but also challenging to pickup at firstI'm not saying I'd main a particular character, I just want someone to help me get the fundamentals/mechanics down, so that I may explore a more complex character in the future.
He is one of the best characters in the game. Nimble Reptile in particular is one of the harder characters to use but he is very rewarding once you undestand how to play him. Thanks for starting this thread @Made Capo!
I just picked up MKXL yesterday for PS4, and while I'm still running through the story, I'm running Nimble Reptile through Training to likely main for the first little while at least.
I've always liked Reptile, particularly in his classic ninja costume, but according to you guys, he seems like a good entry character, so I'm happy about that.
I still can’t input his multi-punch string so I never touched him.I'm biased towards buzzsaw laou. He's has a bit of everything. Good footsies, 50/50, set play, stagger pressure, air control, etc. Can teach a lot, but also challenging to pickup at first
I guess we're in the same boat, lol...Are you on PS4? Maybe we can learn together. Whenever I'm free I can get on (if my girl leaves me alone, lol)Thanks for starting this thread @Made Capo!
