I must be Insane. Does Fun Matter?

I'mma be real. It's easier to play characters that are top tier in Injustice than it is to play characters you actually enjoy.

I love Bane. But I will get my ass handed to me, for example, by solid Superman players. Superman is top tier. And really, it's not even that. Maybe I suck, but Superman is so heat vision spam friendly that it feels ridiculous even trying to get good with Bane, because the character is such low tier. And honestly? Superman ain't all that fun of a character to really play with.

Might as well perfect Batman. And I hate Batman. But all the top players seem to play him.

I love playing Hawkgirl, and I know she's not top tier at all. She's not combo heavy, but she's feisty and fun.

The truth is, gaming, especially fighting games, are growing as a spectator sport.
I want to focus on that. Exactly why is that? Is it because these games, the level of competition, the spectators just don't care to get to that level of competitive play?

I mean, watching Reo and Runway Mafia game on YouTube is fun and exciting. But playing them in person? I can't touch them in level of skill.

So does it come down to enjoying from afar rather than getting in on the game yourself? You can still enjoy the flashiness and the combos, but you do it from a spectators view.

Hell, watching Filipino Champ rock Evo 2012 in MvC3... yeah... I think I will stay on the sidelines and watch. Thanks. Same with Perfect Legend in MK9. I'll enjoy watching them play. I can still enjoy the game from afar. Lol.

If you pick a character that you hate just because they have a good tier rating, you might not have enough fun playing to put the necessary time in to make the best use of the character. A character with a lower rating might actually turn out to be better for you since you'll practice more if you are having more fun with the character. That is unless you are a purist with absolutely zero character bias who only cares about winning, which is fair enough. Nothing wrong with that. At the same time, if you pick a character that has real problems, one who has bad mus with popular characters, and you just get killed time after time, you might not stay in it long-term either. You could get frustrated and there it goes. So, there is probably a balance of winning vs. fun-from-character. For some it might be 100-0. Others 0-100. Probably a lot of us fall somewhere in between.

It does seem early to put too much stock on tiers. We are still well within the season for nerfs and buffs. I heard Kano was great when MK9 first came out, then he got nerfed to bottom tier. So, Cyborg could get nerfed to D- and Bane could get buffed to S and we really don't know what tweaks will come or how they'll play out.

I've never really payed attention to tiers, mainly because all of the "top-tier" character users end up playing the same, meaning that they're predictable and after facing like 5 Superman players, you know how to beat the next one you fight and so on and so forth.

I only play with characters I like. I don't care how high tier a character is, how easily they can beat everyone else in the roster, if I don't like the character, I will never use them.

What does it matter? If my idea of fun is to win, I am going to do anything and everything that maximizes my chance of winning. If that means tier whoring, than so be it. As many have said, fun is subjective, using low tier or your favorite isn't always fun for everyone. You can use whoever you want, but don't get mad when you're getting bodied because your favorite character is poo.
