Do you ever feel selfish for winning?

I love winning but some times I feel selfish for winning in fighting games. Especially if it is against a family member or friend. I mean winning is a selfish thing. When you are sitting next to someone, playing a match, you know exactly how they will feel if they win. They'll get excited, there will be a big smile on their face, and they'll be filled with joy. Or if they lose, they'll be sad and disappointed. So you can give them that joyous moment or you can deny them that moment and make them feel disappointed. It's actually very depressing when you think of it this way but it's true. Deciding to win and be happy is deciding to make the other person unhappy. Now if your opponent is an asshole this is no problem. But if you are playing someone you actually like this is actually a problem, for me at least, because winning just isn't worth it some times. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever felt this way.

If it's a family member or friend I usually let the games be even, maybe even lose like one more game than them, but knowing I could have won. If it's a stranger then I'm trying to win obviously because the way I see it, I don't know how much time they practice or play? Hell they can practice 5 hours a day for all I know, so if I lose I don't get upset honestly, I'll just think on how I could have done better, then take my loses as something positive and learn from them. If I win, the exact opposite can be said also so guess what? It's a win/win situation.

Not Good Enough
I only feel bad for someone if I zone with someone like Cybernetic and they have no idea how to get in on me. Like, zoning is a huge part of my play, and if I take like 20% of their HP before they even get into my personal space to play footsies, I feel extremely bad. Normally I'll switch to Relentless if I'm playing someone who can't reasonably counter zoning, and work on doing tick-throws. I'm not particularly good at them, so I think I'm giving em a chance. Aside from that, I don't feel bad about beating anyone on my friends list, and I don't feel bad about someone completely bodying me. It's okay to do that in a fighting game lol.

Same. I main HQT and I start feeling kinda bad when they don't know what to do about the zoning. That's when you practice up you're secondaries ;)

I think that there are some very different attitudes in fighting game players and any competitive game. Personally I get absolutely zero enjoyment out of "bodying" someone out side of structured sets with mates of equal skill or who are better than me. Random people on the net, especially match maker finds that are obviously beginners or something.. I not only find it in bad form to just murder them, I also think it is just not fun for me.

I try not to "play down" to them either.. but I do things I wouldn't do in a normal game. I go for swag combos, I pick toons that I am only learning and try and learn things on the fly (like a interactive training mode) as well as other things that allow new players to experience the game and have fun as well as making the game fun for me.

I think on some level the kind of people that enjoy destroying random people and take pleasure in griefing are in some ways kinda like bullies. Like a guy beating up the science geek chick or w/e. It is not only bad manures it is in some ways just being a bad person.

That is not to say that actual competitive players should hold back. When you are evenly matched and legit playing it is everyone for themselves, but if you double perfect some random scrub that challenged you in the chat room, maybe in game 2 step it back a notch and not be a jerk.

It's a competitive game. If both players are just goofing around then that's one thing, but if your opponent is trying to beat you, you'd be doing them a disservice by not trying to beat them back.

I actually do not agree with that. Fighting games are "games" that "can be chosen to be played competitively". The goal for nearly the entire player base is to have fun. Not to be the next Justin Wong. The competitive player base in MK is extreamly small compared to the casuals and all they what is to enjoy playing.

The battlefield does not distinguish between friend and foe. There must always be one winner and one loser.

At least that's the mindset you need to have if you're dead set on competing. If you're a casual player, then it's your choice to let the cards fall where they may.

Right, which is why I mention goofing around. You're either trying to win or your just playing for fun. Just because you're playing to win doesn't mean you're trying to become a pro player like Justin Wong, it just means you're trying to beat your friend and they are trying to beat you.

When I was a casual in mk 9, someone beat me who had this asshole mentality that made me get a lot better just so I'd never lose to him again. And after being able to hang with the good players like forever king and f0xy grampa, I fought that asshole who beat me before and the win was so unsatisfying. I had gotten so good it was like stepping on an ant. So being an asshole to someone can, sometimes, be a good thing for them. But, I wouldn't recommend being an asshole to your opponent. It'd be better if everyone was a bit nicer to one another.
