How do you play?
Play cards onto the fightline to activate their effects and gain an advantage. Your goal is to use a combination of fighters, kombatants, and techniques to reduce your opponent’s health to zero and claim victory!
You and your opponent will alternate taking turns, which can be broken down into phases. In each phase, take advantage of the initiative system to disrupt your opponent’s strategy and strengthen your own.
Each turn you will draw cards, gain meter with soul fragments, play cards, initiate fights with kombatants or fighters, and finally have an additional opportunity to play any remaining cards in your hand.
Maximize your cards’ potential to gain the upper hand and defeat your opponent.
TURN PHASES/ RULES
SOUL FRAGMENTS AND METER SYSTEM
Gain meter and thresholds by playing soul fragments. Meter is needed to play fighters, kombatants, and techniques and you must use meter that matches that cards’ thresholds to fulfil its play requirement. You may play up to 1 soul fragment per turn unless an effect states otherwise.
Meter is banked, so to speak, as a permanent resource, and acts as well that can be drawn from to play cards. Thresholds further determine what cards can be played, and are banked in a similar fashion.
FIGHTER CARDS
Standard units that can attack, defend, and use abilities.
ex.
When allied Tarkatans attack, give them +2/+0 and Krushing Blow until the end of the battle phase.
KOMBATANT CARDS
Special units that can attack, defend, and use abilities like fighters, but have powerful effects that can empower a unique strategy.
ex.
While you have 12+ thresholds, Shang Tsung cannot take damage or be killed.
TECHNIQUE CARDS
Technique cards are non-unit cards that are played onto the fightline and trigger their effect. After this effect is resolves, the card is removed from play and sent to the grave.
ex.
CARD KEYWORDS
Keywords are a shorthand used to communicate certain traits or abilities that a card may have.
ex. Mix-Up | A card with the mixup keyword deals damage before its blocker while attacking.
