Doctor Fate Pre-Release General Discussion/Speculation Thread

I don't know how effective it'll be for that because it seems he has to be pretty close to shut down interactables and if you're zoning you won't be that close. Unless his trait does make it full screen
Fair point. It'll probably see more use from locking people into the corner.

if you go to 50 min and 10 seconds u can see fates norms, combos and specials. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/130480049

of note he has an air projectile. i was worried about his up and away control. vs top players and people that understand zoning it will be hard with fate I think. without that unpredictability factor in his zoning (like sinestro trait) top players will just walk u down.

i think fate's game will revolve on the use of his orb. if characters have ways around that fate might struggle. also death stroke style zoning could make it very hard for fate to get anything started or might not even get an orb on the screen.

Fate is awesome, but will feel strange if he is the only Mage.

How the hell is Cheetah going deal with Dr Fate? He has every tool necessary to be an unwinnable matchup for her. Rush down characters are going to have to burn hella meter to have a chance, and with the "Clash" breaker system, it will come back to bite you on the ass.

But of course, this is speculation.

I would not speak about matchups until I have the game in my hands.

There are lots of variables we don't know. Also meterburn roll is a great universal antizoning tool.

A pretty extreme speculation Imo. She looks pretty mobile to me, has multi hitting strings = meter building and she mixes like crazy so Fate is probably gonna have a bad tiiiime.

Beware my power.
So doctor fates ability to hit you with the 3 unblockable ankhs into the pillar needs to be reworked so the pillar hits as an unblockable and not a mid.

Having all 3 ankhs summoned essentially guarantees you nothing with the added difficulty of having to land all 3 of them at one time, respectively.

As it is now, it is technically more optimized to go for possibly 2 anks summoned instead of 3 ,firstly, because the 3rd ankh has a higher chance of missing than the first 2 anks.
Secondly, going for 2 ankhs that are probably guaranteed to hit any linear movement on the screen is more optimized than attempting to hit them with the non guaranteed 3 because you're not wasting frames in the neutral summoning a 3 ankh that most likely won't hit and essentially doesn't guarantee anything.

So either the pillar needs to changed to unblockable (suggested), or they should increase the damage of the single hit anks if the pillar is going to be a mid because imo it makes the move work improperly and essentially gives the player no reward for properly allocating their playstyle toward summoning 3 anks.

On a side note, the unblockable pillar would also have the added bonus of adding to doctor dates zoning meta and would be way more fun, but besides that fact I am trying to address the properties of this move objectively.

LOL! I love pre-release discussion as much as anyone, but how could you possible come to this conclusion without actually playing the character. -.-

Other things to note:

The strength of doctor fates zoning seems to be that he really excels at creating and keeping a gap between him and his opponent with his arsenal of keep away tools. His healing orb, horizontal projectiles and seemingly nonexistent need for meter will also allow him to defeat people with his zoning based strongly on his sustainability; not only to manage his own screen space, health percentage, meter and interactables--but the opponents as well.

Edit: with traited grab midscreen you can probably follow up with some meterburn pews for sure. Dont believe NRS that it only combos in the corner. Projectiles are combos too

Fate looks really solid, definitely a great zoning and keep away character with set ups via the orb. So I'm fine with him not having a solid rushdown game, I mean most zoners aren't supposed to anyway. He and Firestorm will be my main guys no doubt, but I'm very curious about Scarecrow as well.

There will always be a matchup where you will have to rushdown a character as a zoner. Initially I overlooked the trait in favor of all of his other fantastic zoning moves but I am now thinking it's his viability factor.

Whether it be counter zoning or good anti projectile characters, you will have to fight the mu differently than you are used to and put the pressure on some people. So it helps that our damage output, combos and pressure is greatly increased with trait active.

It's his rushdown edge in addition to his extremely good zoning that will make the character solid in this game, trust me

I think it depends on how the match goes honestly, if the zoning player is doing a good job keeping them out then it's not necessary to rush them down, know what I mean? However if the match is going 50/50 or you're having trouble outzoning them I can see that scenario. Just pointing out that typically speaking Fate, Firestorm's playstyle is definitely more to zone/keep out than rush down. Not saying they can't, but they won't be as good as it as say Batman or someone like that, you know? I see zoning characters as say they're having trouble doing so, to counter more so than rushdown unless the character is versatile and can literally do both like say Sektor in MK9 for example. If they can do that, then you have the best of both worlds. I definitely think FS has a few more rushdown options than Fate has though. However, Fate seems to have more set ups.

Okay.

So basically, you want 3 unblockable projectiles that lead to an unblockable attack, which tracks you wherever you are onscreen, and leads to a combo? And you justify this, by saying that's fair because the ankhs may not hit?

BWAHAHAHAHA

That's insanely ridiculous. Go back to the dictionary & look up the word "objective". It says nothing about buffing your fav character to Broke-Tier. Sorry bud.
