This one goes out to those who have expressed deep concern for Double Helix Games being the ones who are developing the new Killer Instinct (3). The media star, Maximilian made a very valid point on twitter regarding the 'negative' feedback towards Killer Instinct being Double Helix Games' first fighting game. Simply put, Killer Instinct was Rare's first fighting game too. However, this also sprouted a comment from known commentator, James Chen, who commented saying, "Hate to be that guy, Max, but Killer Instinct 1 was a pretty terrible Fighting Game. This is not a vote of confidence.".

This did spark some very interesting comments...

@maximilian_ Hate to be that guy, Max, but Killer Instinct 1 was a pretty terrible Fighting Game. This is not a vote of confidence. :-(

maximilian ‏@maximilian_ 16h
@jchensor Dude, I totally agree with you haha. I love many things about KI, combos, music, art. But the meat of it is terrible.

James Chen ‏@jchensor 16h
@maximilian_ I have always said I did argue long ago that KI1 was better than VF1. Hahaha! KI1 was a fun 1-player game, I'll give it that.

Tony ‏@Tekknight 16h
@maximilian_ @jchensor To be fair sooooo many fighters were bad back then. We just liked fighting. Hopefully new KI is refined and balanced

James Chen ‏@jchensor 16h
@Pixel_Kaiser @maximilian_ I've heard Silent Hill: Homecoming is really bad, so I'm scared to play it (not for the right reasons!).

James Chen ‏@jchensor 16h
@Tekknight @maximilian_ Exactly. It's a different era. If NetherRealms can convince Ed Boon to remove the Block Button, anything can happen.

Leonard Lai ‏@1eonard_1ai 16h
@jchensor @maximilian_ If it means anything, they do have fighting game players on staff, including buktooth http://www.polygon.com/e3-2013/2013/6/14/4420310/defending-killer-instinct

William Carpenter ‏@Pixel_Kaiser 16h
@jchensor @maximilian_ Yeah, it's a real mess. Same for the GI Joe movie tie-in game, another one of their gems. Not really reassuring.

James Chen ‏@jchensor 16h
@1eonard_1ai @maximilian_ Yeah, for sure! There's a lot of potential for KI3. It could do a lot for the #FGC if it turns out great.

James Chen ‏@jchensor 16h
@Pixel_Kaiser @maximilian_ It's diff in this case, I think. They have a lot of Fighting Game pedigree on staff, so hopefully it'll work out.

Tony ‏@Tekknight 16h
@jchensor @maximilian_ LOL!

BJ Wanlund ‏@bjwanlund 15h
@jchensor @maximilian_ Agreed. VF1 was such a bad game. Still surprised Sega went with VF rather than Eternal Champions

James Chen ‏@jchensor 15h
@bjwanlund @maximilian_ Haha. Eternal Champions was pretty bad too, frankly. LOL! Also, ET was made by U.S. studio, VF Japan... that's why.
After reading this, have your thoughts changed?

Too little, too late...
KI1 was ahead of his time with regarding graphics (Arcade) was just wonderful to be in front of that machine, stunning and dazzling, while it is true that the gameplay was rather limited compared with others of the time, no throws for example but KI it was still entertaining and marked an era of FG.

In KI1 at a high level of play things like triple combos, anti breakers and Stun set ups dominated the game.
KI1 had different revisions, I do not remember exactly but in the first version that I played guard break was very useful (fulgore red proyectiles) but in later versions that I play KI 1 guard break received some changes, was not so fast and some were safe on block, this made the fights almost eternal...

... and as forget of those matches in the sky :D

Get over here!
I don't know... I am actually pretty hyped for the game. I will be getting it whenever I get an Xbox One if it does well. I still think it is bound to failure. There are just too many negatives. I will give it a chance though. :D

Regarding this specific thread: No... no one will convince me differently. KI is being developed by a company with a horrible track record. I don't care if this is the first good game they make... It isn't more comforting knowing that the first Killer Instinct wasn't very good... that was over a decade ago. There were tech limitations... there is no excuse to release a shitty game on the next gen Xbox One.

I miss the old, thoughtful-reflection-on-his losses, breaking-down-his-wins Max; and don't care for the new, YouTube-trend-chasing, gets-irrationally-hype-about-everything Max.

Double Helix doesn't have a bad track record, they have a godawful track record. Everyone should put aside their nostalgia and start being very, very skeptical about the new Killer Instinct.

I remember the press they did for Silent Hill: Homecoming about how they "understood Silent Hill" and how it was going to be a true Silent Hill game. It wasn't. It was really, really bad and nothing like a Silent Hill game.

I agree heavily with this. I've been hyper critical of KI3 since the start simply because the first two were pretty, not deep, and double helix would actually look better if they'd never made a game before. Instead their track record is abysmal. Further max just gushing about the game because it's pretty isn't really getting me excited.

That said the video where they actually go over the mechanics, decisions, and the why, was very very good. I was shocked that the guy i expect pointless hype from(now with 50% more color! and look at these combos!) actually knew what problems the KI series faced in the past, and gave good mid to high level explanations of mechanics, and what they were hoping to accomplish with them(deeper breakers, better combos, less turtling, eliminate unbreakable's).

I'm still going to be SUPER skeptical of this until it hits, but this is the first thing that's making me slightly sad i likely won't be getting an XBox. Actually hearing someone intelligently talk shop instead of pushing out buzzwords was refreshing.

I feel like i'm in some weird reverse world where the publisher actually knows his shit and the FG player is lost in nostalgia.

Some people from the FGC that have played it seem to be enjoying it, like Sabin and Maximilian. However, Double Helix's terribad track record makes me really skeptical about this game. And tbh it doesn't feel like KI at all, more like a reskinned SFIV. Nevertheless, it's good to have another western fighting game developer

Now that KI is revived there's only one franchise left, Bushido Blade

but Rare didn't make that battleship game, or the green lantern game, or the GI joe game... you see where i'm going with this

To be fair is there even a single game Sabin and Maximilian don't like? lol they enjoy and play almost everything it seems.

My thoughts haven't really changed. The game has potential but they need to change a bunch of things to really interest me. As of right now I see the new KI becoming a party game for casuals more than a serious fighting game.

Sabin was apparently rubbing shoulders with the dev team so I can't take his word for granted. Don't know about Maximilian but I'm pretty sure if he thought the game was closer to a casualfest he would have pointed it out. The game's still pre-alpha though and there's still a lot of room for improvement

lol haters gonna hate, imma go out on a limb here and assume 80% of TYM users haven't even played KI, (the original)

my thoughts on this whole 600 dollar system for one game!!

Meh, It'll be on PSN before you know it,

you cant move systems on a FTP game,

especially one that looks horrible, and nothing like the original franchise

I don't think you understand that Rare and all of their IPs are owned by Microsoft. KI being developed by Double Helix doesn't change the fact that Microsoft forever owns the KI license from now on. So KI coming to PSN is an impossible dream.

I also laugh at the assumption that not liking the new KI means we have never played the original ones.

If MK10 sucks I'm not going to buy it just because it's MK. Sorry I guess that means I'm not a "true MK/KI fan".

I personally think KI was a great fighting style game; apparently a lot of other people also loved the game. If you didn't like the original KI, then you are not probably going to like this game.

Posthuman

Where's TJ Combo?
KI3 has so much potential of becaming a tournament fighter but being on spybox is gonna reduce 70% of potetial players...

I also feel like they gotta change the art style a little bit, right now it looks like sf4 and not KI... Look at mk9 it looks like an mk game!

Nobody's hating on the fact that KI3 went to a developer that has yet to make a fighting game.

We're hating on the fact that KI3 went to a developer with a release list that reads more like a criminal record.

This game looks more legit to me already than Injustice looks with it's interactables, strong emphasis on zoning and counterpick fest. The combo system really adds a layer of depth to it that is unique to the franchise. There is a game to it when you get hit rather than just wait for the combo the end.

This may be Double Helix's first game but they are not afraid to borrow stuff that has been proven solid from other fighters. Most importantly: the Street Fighter series.

At this point, the game has already been tested more than injustice. And I love how they are showing off there early build and fishing for fan input.

Also, the only chance we have of seeing this game on other consoles is when the XB1 fails so hard Microsoft will abandon the console market and release their games on other consoles like Sega did. I'm hoping many gamers are smart enough to not let their intellect and freedom be insulted by M$. You DO have a say in their policy, you DO have a choice.

The reason it's tough is that no one was holding KI to the standard of a tournament fighting game; whereas now, if you make comparisons to SF4 and whatnot, that's the standard that your game will be held to.

It seems like the team is trying to do everything right, and is paying attention to the right things -- but a game equivalent to KI1 would be considered "broken" in today's post-FGC world, and so Double Helix will need to raise the game to a standard beyond where KI was at the beginning.

It's a challenge -- but it sounds like they're game for it.

yes, thats true, you must not be a true MK fan, good to know :)

KI was fun back in the days because it was gratifying and simple to pull off long combos (especially with Orchid).

Playing fighting games in the mid 90s was a different time because there were so many to choose from and so little quarters to be spent. Games back then wasn't made with tournaments in mind and was simply there so you had options and, so you can play the latest and greatest in terms of graphics.

KI3 does look pretty good and even if Double Helix has a bad record for other games, what they have to show for it right now with KI3 does look promising.

Get staffed bro
As much as I loved KI for its music, atmosphere, combos etc. I don't recall anyone ever playing it as a 2 player game in the arcade. It was all about getting your name on the board.
