Can Injustice appeal to casuals?

I believe Injustice will appeal to the casuals, but the problem is that no matter how much they do appeal to the casuals, they will just leave after maybe 3 months or less

If that long. It'll keep attention until the next anticipated game comes along. Probably In June.

I'm not planning on going anywhere, but I don't think I totally qualify as a casual anymore either. I'm not part of the hardcore either so I'm not sure what you would call me.

The problem with a lot of the reasoning in this thread is that they're basing it on the premise that casuals want to become really good at this game (hence talking about complex strategies and difficult combos), which is not necessarily true.

If you are learning your character then I doubt you are a casual, when I say casual I mean someone who picks the game, plays whoever character they think is coolest then does not bother to learn said character, then bitch about deathstroke and quit

Exactly they don't, the thing is that I don't think Nettherrealms should try to get more of the casual crowd by things like nerfing hated characters when they are just going to quit after a while anyways

Well, then I'm certainly not a casual anymore.

The person I played with, Onilordasmodaeus (sp) saw what a complete and utter wreck I am at playing. He told me to focus on one character and really learn their moves, etc. I ended up doing that as Superman. I can pull off all of his moves around 95% of the time. Now I am working on stringing them together. It is here that I have hit a slight snag and I am still working through it...or trying to at least.

...I have spent the last couple of days, AT LEAST 5 hours each day, trying to perfect just a portion of a combo stream. I stopped using my real life favorite character, Nightwing, to use Superman, who, at least to me, seems easier to learn his fundamentals...
I REALLY didn't think it was so difficult for new players, I play fighting games since I was a child (the first I played was Street fighter II) and I don't feel its that hard to do combos, but I guess now it is 'cause I played the genre since long time. Glad you share your experience with us, people sometimes don't understand how difficult it is for new players to get into the game. If I has to practice 5 hours a day just to pull a combo I would have left the game for sure, your patience and perseverance is amazing dude.

Lack of unlockables/offline things to do is an issue. Those who don't have a scene/good online there is nothing to do. Also the game does appear to cater to pro/tourney play more than it does casuals.

Yeah. My age and my location pretty much kill any opportunity for there to become a scene. I have to take what I can get on-line and I'm finding that I either get someone who destroys me or someone who has no idea what they are doing.

I'm still working on getting where I can play on any difficulty level. Currently I am finishing up the story on Medium difficulty. I've been doing fine up until the last two fights...Doomsday and Superman. I get close on Doomsday...have yet to try Superman (Although I can beat him on medium level in Classic Battles)

I've got plenty of time on my hands so using some of it on Injustice is no big deal. I've played fighting games even longer than you going all the way back to games like Karate Champ. I just never took the time to LEARN how to play. I'd learn maybe a move or two, but would never stick with it.
I know how it takes time to get good at anything, so I'm not expecting it to just happen overnight. You have YEARS playing the genre behind you. You've just progressed naturally by playing when you could. I'm doing the same thing now. I have literally years of playing ahead of me until I have reached your level. I don't know that I ever will...as long as I become competent, I'll be happy. I may find that I just CAN'T get any better. I won't give in to that until I personally feel I have given it my best shot.

I guess it just doesn't come naturally to everyone. Personally, mk9 was my first fighting game, I found this website and was doing full combo punishes the next day. Although I also have an offline group who learned with me, so I think each other's help allowed us to learn exponentially faster than other people.

I guess it does. It might have something to do with age as well..I'm just no as quick as I once was, while you are not as quick as you will be if you keep at it. And yes, I think hanging out with your buddies probably helped you get better faster. Who knows maybe you ARE a prodigy and have yet to take the world by storm and show what you are capable of doing.

All I know is that the more you play, the better you will get..weather that is basically by yourself, or hanging out with your friends.

So guys, after practicing some more...yeah, I still suck. xD

But no, seriously, with Superman I've been trying to do like some light light light, scoop, air grab meter burn combo, and I'm kinda nailing it.

Aaaaand that's pretty much the only combo that I know.

Yeah I still suck at it too.

And I can't even get that combo down for Supes. Best I have managed is Forward + Medium, Strong, Meter Burn Super Breath. And I don't always manage to get the Meter Burn. Hell there are times I don't get the Super Breath still, although that is a rarity now. I'm trying to add into the beginning a Down + Medium

So I don't go crazy on Supes I have been working a little with Nightwing too. I'm working on Light, Light, Strong + Escrima Fury, Jumping Strong. I guess the right way to write that is 113, Escrima Fury, J3. Anyway I sometimes can't hit the Escrima Fury with the right timing.

I'm working on replacing the jumping strong with dash, forward strong, jumping medium, to keep the combo going.

Total Time in Practice 50 hr 39 min 23 sec according to my Hero card.

So, no, I haven't given up...but my enthusiasm isn't at an all time high right now to say the least. I'm still hoping that "click" thing happens.

My GF loves Injustice, its the first game since You Don't Know Jack she actively ASKS me to play with her.

A big cast full of characters she knows and loves, mashable combos, kicking people through walls and into space, panic mode shoulder button super - it's a dream game for a couple that wants to play together (but maybe one doesn't have much of a background in FGs).

Is she the next Tom Brady? Nope. Do I take it easy on her and maybe don't go for the dirt I'd do to people online? Yes. Do we have a ton of fun assing around with it? Yup.

IMO, Injustice is really well made. It has this wonderfully low barrier to entry that even the most novice of players can join in on, and then it has this whole other strata of legitimate fighting game grittiness. A true best of both worlds.

I appreciate the thought, but I've got the game on 360.

Right now I'm just trying to get things into muscle memory. Years of not playing have to be overcome, which is why I am putting in so much time in the practice room. I'm trying to get these operations which seem foreign to me into muscle memory.

The good news is that I *am* pulling off the moves much more consistently than when I started. The bad news is that they don't work consistently when I try to string them together. Which is just because I am not inputting them fast enough.

I'm not sure what any tym'ers can do to help. at this point. I'm still trying to get the basics down

Here is a good example of Casual vs Competitive and how it applies to games like this.

My friend and his brother are Casual Gamers. Now, he is a gamer. He plays to win. If he has free time, he will be gaming. However, he is casual in a sense that if a Game ever involves anything more than "Do X to complete Y" progression he will quickly lose interest. If he can jump in to a match of CoD or Halo where you simply point and shoot and get good at aiming to be successful he will play the hell out of it.

But, he is still Casual because he will never delve deeper into the meaningful parts of the game that require strategy and though and anything more than the face value of the game.

In fighting games (where this is often necessary or games like DotA or LoL) he will fall tragicly short.

So my Friend shows me MK9 for the first time. I had heard about it and was interested. Looked fun. I play at this house a few nights for a couple hours. He go back and forth do some easy 3hit strings and some specials. Win and lose. Throw in an X-Ray for good quick, easy fun.

I buy the game. I spend a few nights in the practice lab. I pick up Liu Kang. Learn some of his big hitting combos, learn some mix-ups, learn a few other things.

(this only takes a couple hours one or two nights to pick up. I honestly dont understand the "casual play for fun mindset" and i never will.)

We end up playing one night and im busting out combos left and right for huge damage. Juggling, mixups, the works. Well the friend's brothers instant reaction is "Wtf dude, you are being cheap! Stop doing those huge combos and just play the game. Pick someone else, thats a cheap character." I laugh it off because it is hilarious and its funny seeing him whine.

So i win a couple times, they pick someone like scorpion or subzero. Now, i'm not great at the game at this point so while i can do a few big combos and such, spam still throws me off as well as having to block High or low for certain strings. So they start sitting back spamming the ground fire as scorpion/his pull and the teleport to mix me up. And thats it. They spam 3 moves over and over throughout the fight to stop me from getting in. I dont complain. I know it's something i have to work on and i need to learn how to adapt to that playstyle.

So i lose a couple, but still win the majority becaus i have those big strings and better fundamentals. I keep getting better and they keep letting loose with their 3 or 4 specials they know how to do.

Well this goes on for a month or two. Then comes a time where i still want to play because im delving deeper in to the game and learning more and more and I know im not great with dealing with spam (and i know they can provide plenty of practice) and they have stopped learning. They dont want to play because it's boring and i usually win.

So they shelved the game and it's on to the next big thing for instant gratification and a feeling of success, whereas my gratification comes from learning and progressing, theirs comes from winning.

Once a casual player gets to a point in his career where he can no longer win the majority without having to learn anything new he will quit the game unless the game is so great/compelling that they are drawn to in. Few games these days have that.

How does this apply to Injustice?

Well its like mk9 all over again. Friends said they bought injustice and its awesome and i check it out. Like what i see. Buy it. Spend a few nights in the lab. Pickup some strings/combos. Learn a few things. Meet up. They had already returned their copy for a new games. Luckily i brought mine. We play, i do what i do. Tears/whining from the brother.

My friend grabs superman (im Grundy). He spams left and right with lasers to keep me out. When i get close he does the flying downward kick (have to block high) or the BF-2 or whatever punch knockback to get me back to range.

I lose about 10 matches in a row. Say wait a minute, do that attack on me real quick. I block, press a few buttons to see how i can punish it. Do the same with the other move.

Say okay, we start again. I change up my playstyle, i've learned how to punish his garbage. and i start winning a few rounds.
Well we've played about 15 rounds at this point and he is done. Says "i feel like im doing the same thing over and over and its kind of getting boring"

Meanwhile, i am having a great time actually learning the game and doing better. I want to keep going because it is awesome practice that i know ill need for later when getting in to online play vs good players and spammers alike. I could play those matches all night until i feel im competant enough to handle the situation. He is unwilling to adapt and to learn. He is a casual player.

TL;DR

Causual is a mindset. It has nothing to do with the game or the player. It has nothing to do with how hard it is or how easy it is. It has everything to do with how much you are willing to lose to get better. How much you are willing to learn to get better. A competitive players strives to be the best and will do what it takes to get there.

A casual player will play until he can no longer win enough games to satisfy himself and then be done with the game.
A competitive player will play until he no longer loses. (and then probably keep playing just to rub it in to the chumps that bow before him)
