Online LAG.

Im new here in TYM , but not new to MK.
Now i've always played with my friends and we make MK tournaments weekly.A lot of good players compete and everyone has fun and i've learned a lot,etcetc...
Now playing the AI at expert is boring as hell, i know many here feel the same.So i decided i would play ONLINE. I must admit LAG is not very bad,compared to other fighting games i've played online,(SSF4, BB:CS,etc..),but still a single second of delayed response can really fuck up my game.I main Kabal,Kano and Sektor.Now With Kabal and Sektor i really just can't make them work online...Kano is different since he DOESNT depend on combos to win...

Any advice?
Is it like this for everyone?
Anything i can do to fix this?
Wouldn't play a lot ONLINE screw up my IRL gaming?

Go offline to refresh your timings if you become too immersed in online. As far as online goes, when someone challenges you look to make sure they have at least a 3 bar(sphere) connection. Even then its random whether or not the internet will maintain integrity. If you have a hard time picking your character more than likely you won't even make it to the match before seeing "the game session is no longer available". You just have to roll with it and take what you can get online for now. I have 83 disconnects so far and I can tell you I'm no puller either.

I played Alex Ouderkirk on Xbox Live today. I picked Kabal, he ran to Reptile (seems to be a common counter), and I beat him first round. Round two he jumps back, and stops abruptly. I had an inkling his controller died and in gentlemen fashion I jumped back full screen and waited it out. Not 10 seconds left he started spitting acid balls at me to gain a quick life lead. I plowed through the barrage of stupid with an EX-dash, set him up for a combo reset, dropped it and had him blast through my pressure with an Xray. He got it out in time to watch the animation, but not in time for the damage to register and I won the match. He quit. What a fuck.

Just played some guy named HP DarkMan z had two matches first match he took the first round I took the last two. Next fight he picks noob I guess thinking an easy win vs a kenshi. I Parry two of his running mans up close within 2 inches he stops for a second then keeps fighting and drops two rounds in a row to me then quits out before finsh him pops up. LOL

Online lag is pretty awful in this game. There are a lot of times when I input a move and it simply doesn't come out at all.

This. I did F3 2 with Kabal and it wouldn't do the spin. I was getting pretty frustrated. If this was happening to me, I would have simply just left after that match.

Ok so...I'm fighting a mean Kabal...like iAF/bullet hell/makes Sindel spammers look useless tier Kabal...I managed to at least make all the macthes 3 rounds but only won once. Right after a 8 loss streak or so, I declined his last match. I'm too young too suffer a popped artery or something and he sent me a message saying.

"If I didn't resort to doing that with Kabal you would have beaten me, ggs".

I believe he is talking about when the opponent does those things. Im pretty sure its usually during the FINISH HIM period when people teabag, unless your really bad and then they do it during the actual match lol.

But yeah, teabagging is low.... I also think fatalities are a form of teabagging. Just stupid and uncalled for.

I don't agree. I think Fatalities are the "post-touchdown victory dance".

Babalities however are tea-bagging.....

What kind of lag setups have you encountered while playing MK online?

(What is a lag setup?)
Lag setup is a tactic which would never beat anyone that plays on competitive level in an offline environment but would mostly take them out online. something that would be very unsafe and just plain stupid to use with out lag present. mostly used by stat whores online a prime example would be reptiles elbow dash which is completely punishable on reaction offline but sometimes lag just makes it "pseudo safe" and promotes spamming it online. the punish frames are small in the first place and a bit strict so punishing it online needs near clairvoyant ability to release block few milliseconds before you even see the move coming and start to mash on your punishment move.

This is my list of lag setups i´ve encountered online
(mostly played by people that only take 1 match and start spamming shit into the chat after they win)

Milleena´s D4 spam, why?: timing those jumping kicks to punish this tactic is super hard with lag present.

Night wolf´s Shoulder ram&Lightning spam, why?: Lightning is harder to react and ducking shoulder ram fails seldom due to lag

Raiden´s teleport spam, why?: lag makes you mostly lose to what he gets to do because your reaction just cant beat the lag

Noob saibot´s DB3 on block to DF3, why?: using DF3 after DB3 is blocked becomes pseudo safe because you have to dash to get the punish which usually fails before the next DB3 comes out because of the lag delay

Reptile´s Elbowdash, why?: This is explained in the intro (confirmed nerf will fix this)

Kung lao´s spin spam, why?: Same reason as reptile, its hard to punish on block with the small recovery time and pushback (confirmed nerf will also fix this)

Kung lao´s low hat spam to glide kick, why?: Doing consistent dash crouch block is very hard online thus using the low hat is an easy way to get people jump and get caught in glide kick (Also fixed in the coming patch after low hat gets more recovery

Kitanas IAF keepaway with air glide, why?: in offline environment the glide is always unsafe option in online though its a bitch to punish with lag present.

Cyber sub reversal spam, why?: The timing for the punish is strict and most of the time lag fixes it so the punish move just gets hit into another reversal. it is counterable by projectiles but melee oriented chars have a great deal trying to time those punishes.

Kung lao´s 2, 4 string, why?: this string is easy to react offline but online you cant go down from standing on reaction before the low hits. this makes it a lag friendly string. which is usually continued by a spin (who cares if its hitconfirmable or not, they cant react to it on block cause of the lag anyway type of attitude is usually present)

Scorpion Hellfire: Jump out on reaction offline is fine but nearly impossible with lag. So you have to anticipate it and jump far more often than you should. Randomly jumping around in this game is seldom a good idea. Good thing most Scorpion players online are idiots and rather teleport into your block than doing something useful.

I just started playing online again after a loooong hiatus, and so far the only character i've ran into that abused lag setups has been scorpion. Hellfire. Cannot jump on wakeup online. In SOME matches anyway, not all of course.

Also this one guy I played did a very simple like... 20% combo ending with a hit that put me into stagger state, and he got a free cross over jump punch to start the same combo. He did this once the first round, saw that I could not poke or jump out of this loop due to lag, and 2nd round did it over and over until I was dead.

I've only been playing online again post-patch... but so far this is the only lag tactic i've encountered. And it was one time. There's been other situations where I couldn't poke out or punish something due to lag, but the other person was none the wiser and didn't abuse the tactic. I'm hoping I don't run into too many of these situations because i'm enjoying playing again.

To be perfectly honest, i´ve yet to play a single fighter that doesn´t have lag setups. fact is there will never be a game with zero lag with the tech we have on our hands today.

Tekken, MvC3, soulcalibur, street fighter all have lag setups even blazblue which has arguably the best net code out there.

My intention with this thread isn´t to diss on the games netcode but the people that abuse the lag and think they actually play the game on a high level.

Ranked is almost always teeming with teabagging pricks. Mostly ones who only play Sub-Zero or Kung Lao, too. I use it almost exclusively to work on my Kano v SZ matchup.

I've taken it upon myself to expose these losers on Youtube - such as l-Spadez-l and DefFresh87, for example - because if they are going to embarrass the MK community with such unacceptable conduct like that, they don't deserve any rights to play the game. I don't care if they are kids or not. If you can't even be troubled to show some respect, take yourself back to elementary school.

I won't deny that I do get salty and easily frustrated (which tends to affect my gameplay a great deal), but even then the players will hear nothing but GGS from me and will always have my respect. Never have I rage-quit, nor will I ever. If I lose, I lose. There's always a chance the outcome will be different in the next series, but only if I look back and take from what I remember about that series.

It sounds like you're trying to justify your own reasons for rage-quitting. Maybe because you have some doubt over what you did? I've noticed you respond to like every post here that seems to contradict part of or your whole post - not that I think it's a bad thing.

These days, I only play with TYM members, which is significantly better. However, I do have those disconnects from previously mentioned laggy randoms, which is fine - I couldn't care less about my online ratio. I think nothing of it. I started playing this online immediately after it came out, which made the lag these days seem mild in comparison. I guess at the end of the day though, I ask myself if I'm developing bad habits by playing online, I mean...crossovers don't have anywhere near that amount of success offline. But yes, I spend a good deal of time on the forums, because well...I can only entertain myself playing expert and going over my bnbs continually in the trainer for so long! Until I can regularly attend locals, I merely think of myself as an MK enthusiast.

I agree with Iniquity. When I first got the game I did my fair share of quitting just because the lag was atrocious. I've since learned that I should turn off torrents and kick everyone else off their computers to get decent play. Even then, there are people who just make me lag badly.

Now I also play only TYM members. They're guaranteed to give me a run for my money, they rarely send hate mail (rarely) and I can expect minimal lag. Sometimes I'll go to the public chat rooms and look for some TYM people. I'll have a random challenge me and I'll accept cuz I don't like turning down challenges. Of course, when I blow them out of the water they send hate mail like no tomorrow.

Only thing worse than rage mail though, are the teabaggers who send you gloat mail. The online community for this game is just awful, if the netcode wasn't horrendous and I felt that at least 1/3 games were optimal I'd feel differently, but damn. I can't even land 'strict' bnbs which require dashing which feels like the majority of the time. There's rare instances where I can and I enjoy those games, but they're just scarce. From what I've seen 360 doesn't appear to suffer from this, quite as much.

I mean, I've got a 27mb connection, surely I shouldn't have such horrendous online hiccups which I feel debilitate me.

Don't get me wrong, they definitely add flavor to the game. But they're simply uncalled for in Ranked matches or other highly competitive environments, as is teabagging.
