What's new

What? No one cares about how Melee made it to EVO this year?

I think (at least I did) the Mk kumminity just assumed WB was going to "donate" a certain amount to make injustice a featured game. Clearly we were wrong. I'm pretty sure it will be there regardless.

companies weren't allowed to donate money at all.

I've seen tons of people who still don't consider MK a fighting game or take it seriously at all. You make a very good point. People rip on both games wrongly for some irrational reasons which nobody should care about or consider anyway. There's no problem with Melee being at Evo at all.

I just can't wait till Evo this year :)
MK isn't a fighting game.

This is sort of thinking is similar to the way older folks think about music. The definition of music is anything which has a repeating beat. However, many a folk are not accepting of newer "alternative" forms of music.
Smash is an "alternative" form of fighting game. There are two flavors of fighting game 2d the vanilla and 3d the chocolate (there are many variations on these basic flavors). Smash is not restricted to either of the basic types of fighting games since there are no restrictions to movement and the stage is about as important as the characters. I guess this would make Smash strawberry flavored.
To me the Smash players are just there. If they want to come play they can.

Lets just pretend smash isn't a fighting game.

You know a few years back, Mario Kart was a main game at EVO. Precedence has been set already so who gives a fuck anymore whether or not XYZ game is a fighting game.

Because that's what happened with the MK9 tournament. But nice assumptions that I thought it was because of not having to hold back to block. Nice try though, kid.

Not really. Power Up 2011 (perhaps the first MK tournament major) had Perfect Legend and Tom Brady in Grand Finals.

That same year EVO had Perfect Legend and REO in Grand Finals.

As a matter of Fact look at the top 8 for EVO.

Perfect Legend: DOA / MK Player
REO: Dedicated MK Player
JOP: Tekken Player
Chris G: Marvel Player
Denzell Terry: MK Player
16-Bit: MK Player
OnlineTony213: Street Fighter AND MK Player (Godlike UMK3 Stryker)
ATL Redd: MK Player

Mortal Kombat at EVO it's first year had quite a bit of diversity. Don't be so quick to decide who will be the best at a NEW game.

You're forgetting the PDP tournament which was the reasons why most non-mk players played. EVO first place probably had less winnings then top 3 PDP. (edit) Actually could be wrong about that, don't remember if NRS donated into EVO pot. If 1st place didn't get 10k then it was less due to EVO payout system (70/20/10)

All I remember seeing in the PDP tournament was

1) Justin Wong
2) Floe
3) Li Joe
4) Perfect Legend
5) JOP
6) Markman

I don't remember any of the big MK heads outside PL making it top 8 off the top of my head.

Yeah. You also have to remember that people like Tom Brady and Krayzie were banned from participating in the tournament.

1. Justin - $10,000
2. Floe - $4,500
3. LI Joe - $2,500
4. Fubarduck - $1,500
5. Perfect Legend - $750
6. Trophy Club - $750
7. Michelangelo - $500
8. Ike S. - $500

That's the Top 8. PL and Michelangelo are both MK players.

I have no idea who Trophy Club and Ike S. are or what they play.

Remember that now we have more MK players and MK has grown. Capcom Games used to have a huge player base advantage but now that gap has shortened. They're still obviously bigger, but we kan hold our own.

Anyway, the point is that it's not just Capcom Players that kould be Top. Top players from Tekken, MK, Soul Calibur, etc, kan all prove themselves to be better. There wasn't a single side that dominated MK. It wasn't like Capcom players completely overthrew us in the beginning.

I was really supporting Skullgirls.

It's really ballsy for a small dev team to make a fighting game, and you can really tell that it was a labor of love for most of them.

Honestly aside from maybe more characters, I don't know what else I would even want in that game, everything is great about it. No bugs, good balance, best netcode ever, even if you don't like art style the quality of the aesthetics is great, the soundtrack is great, training mode is great, etc. (All for 15$)

Not to mention they are one of the two real American fighting game developers that are left (them and NRS) as far as I know.

I think the thing preventing it from having a bigger player base is that it plays more like a vs. game (like Xmen vs SF or MvC1/2 for example) but looks more like an anime game.

Anyway, support them!

It's awesome that the melee community donated so much money to breast cancer. As for the game being a big deal at EVO? Only time will tell how much of the melee community will show. If they have big numbers don't be surprised if their tournament is one of the most hype.

1) Smash is an awesome game.. They will definitely bring the hype, and they earned it. I'm happy for them and excited to see the tourney.

2) Why do people here expend so much breath talking about Capcom? Be proud of your own game, supoort your own people -- who cares who else likes it for 1 month or not? Do you.

If we want to be taken seriously, we have to stop putting other people on a pedestal, and embrace the fact that our own opinions are as valid as anyone else's. So lets support and believe in ourselves, and not be so worried about people from other games.

Because tits, blood, gore, fatalities, and characters with 100% combos make MK more of a fighter ?
That and it doesn't have a bunch of random ass cheapness and a setting that feels like the game was made for children and button mashing can sometimes when you a match ...so yeah i consider MK more of a serious fighter than UMvC3...
