A lot of it just comes out of my competitive nature. I played soccer for 16 years and its an inborn thing. But you are right. I need to just chill out and not worry about it.

Just pick a char with harder executions than Rain. For example Skarlet, you will have 6 months of real fun before getting bored.

You also can drop mk9 for a couple of months waiting for injustice.

Casey, I had a crisis like this too. I picked up kabal. My kabal is decent but I get bodied by players who's main takes me out of my game at all. Then I went back to NW and had fun for a while. Then I went to Skarlet, then human cyrax, now I'm back to just NW and Skarlet.

Skarlet satisfies my hunger for depth while NW is the character I enjoy the most. Just have fun man. I play best when I take the pressure off of myself. You don't have to travel. Just keep playing and experimentation is always exceptable.

Its easier to say who doesnt beat him. His terrible mus (7-3 or worse) in my opinion are Kenshi, Lao, Freddy, Kitana, Kabal. Most others are 4-6 or 5-5. He doesnt have too many advantage MUs. If i were to pick up another character id solely play them like i have been rain. Liu is one im looking at most. I like him. I also play an okay sonya but i hate the idea of playing the top 5 character just to play her.

Liu is braindead but also hella fun

Rain is a very good character great at blowing up almost every character with his armor stopping most pressure, but then i played against sonya and she stuffs damn near all his wakeups, its horrible...he is a top 16 character great, but i dont see him taking a major, my advice is to take a break from mk, focus on life 4 a while then jump back in when injustice comes out, also mk9 will still be pumping hard within the community as well, i dont see the community just abandoning mk9 all together once april comes, or u can just pick up a top tier or tourny viable characters like jax,skarlet,cyrax,kenshi,kabal,lao,kitana if u wanna place in tournaments, i think jax would suit u well smarr

I have had many crisis of faith since April '11 and I am a Sonya loyalist. I only mention this to say that you're not alone.

Some people will tell you to "work through the pain" and smash the barrier in front of you. Others will tell you to relax and take a break to recharge your batteries and miss the game. Both are right. You just have to find what's gonna work for you. I personally have done both over my competative career and I'm still here plugging away.

Maybe try something different in-game. For example, one night, me and a couple of buds (we're all character loyalists) decided to all do random select for our casuals. It was the funniest shit ever! None of us had a clue what we were doing when we were forced to use someone other than our mains and we were laughing our asses off all night.

Sometimes it's a matter of forcing yourself to look at the game differently. You could try a 7 reel Test Your Luck casual night with your mains to force you to use your character differently. Or set up custom rules like no throwing or no jumping; just something different to force yourself to look at your character differently. Possibly spend time exploring your character and see if you can find anything new or "new to you". I know I get excited about this game whenever I learn a new trick or strategy.

Just some thoughts from someone who can really relate to what you are going through.

There's definitely nothing wrong with a break from anything when you're losing interest. Fly is right about taking the pressure off yourself though. You'll perform better and have a lot more fun. After SCR I realized every time I go to a major I put so much pressure on myself that I end up playing like retard. You play your best when you're having fun and your having the most fun when you're playing your best.

You know I don't want you to completely drop Rain but I'll understand if you do. It's not an easy road and some mu's are just too much work. Out of the characters you play and Rain's bad mu's I say Sonya or Freddy should be your alternate.

You're too good and love the game too much to quit pimp so GTFO with that shit I'll see you wednesday fool.

Let me tell you a story.

Remember when MK9 first came out? first couple months? I mained Shang Tsung who was widely considered a top character. Even the best at one point if I remember correctly. Could never find my groove with him. Then Tom Brady put out a video showcasing quan chis runetrap and i thought "how could i do with a tool like that?". Looked at the tier list. Bottom 2:Sheeva and Quan Chi. Didnt know much about that so i thought hey, maybe ill see what i can do with this guy. Under_The_Mayo came along and showed me what i could do with him. No one took any mind. Until devastation. I took what was a bottom 2 character and placed 9th at the biggest tournament since EVO. He instantly shot up the tier list. Played him at tournaments after that till i decided he wasnt any good anymore. Picked up skarlet. Used her at SCR. went 1-2. Picked up quan again at FR, went 2-2. not good but better. Went to NWM, and picked up kenshi for quans bad MUs. Placed 2nd. EVO, all quan, 17th...you all know the rest...

Your heart rests with the character you love to play. Passion is something that is underrated. I have a passion for playing quan chi. hes so fun, and i play him risky i know, but at the end of the day, im proud to say i did what I did with him. And in a tournament, no one can say anything bad about you picking a high tier character to give your main another match to play, because after all, dont we all want to play as many games as possible

Alright. So i am at a bit of a crossroads when it comes to my MK9 life. Lately, I find myself unable to find as much joy in the game as normal.

There is such a thing as "too much" even when it comes to things we like. Doing something else for a while is just best advised in this situation, man. Go out spend some time with your buds / lover / family, or just sit down with them at home and watch a movie. Go to bed at 10pm instead of staying up all night raping face. Or if none of the above is an option, pick up a game that has nothing to do with fighting.

I disagree with this. not to cause drama but in my head and when I'm playing casuals, I dont want gimmicks to work. I really just want to level up. When the people you play know your gimmicks, you are FORCED to up your game in order to win with fundamentals. maybe a gimmick here and there but when Smarr gets to the point that you just described chuck, thats the only point where he will level up at all. Thats when you get the most out of a series.

I say this because Ive played people like Reo and 16 bit only once in my life...did my gimmicks work? nope. And at the highest level you cant expect them to.

you dont have to drop your character, playing other characters will help you getting in the game again and help you look at your own character in different ways. ive been taking a break from lao and been playing kitana, starting to think her 21 is actually better than lao's

you're just forced to learn to read your opponent better.
Not everyone plays a charater the same.... and that is the ... problem and the solution.

Yeah... grinding and grinding will help you learn to pick up some fundamental things. But its also the most frustrating because you're forced to play a certain way to win, and that becomes boring.

Who's to say you really leveled up? Maybe you just picked up on so and so's tendencies and exploit them? If it took you 3 months to do so... are you really leveling up?

IDK... i've been in a place where he is as well. I thought picking up new characters woudl help... thats not the case. Then again... you guys do have an offline scene.... I jelly.
