The portrayal of women in video games.

RunwayMafia

Shoot them. Shoot them all.
But doesn't depicting men in this way do as much damage as depicting an oversexualized female?
Yes, of course. I just think it's TOTALLY outrageous and humorous to witness. Because, in all reality, all this over-sexualized content in games is simply that...outrageous and could be considered laughable. I can remember when I first saw Jade's win pose (you know, the stripper spin down her "pole") I literally scoffed and was like "wtf....MAAAAAAAAAN". LOL.

yes it does. so long as ruthlessness, violence, and unfettered aggression are portrayed as admirable qualities in men, men will continue to try to be these things. but the difference is that men essentially rule the world, therefore they have the power to change their own standards. women do not rule the world and must therefore deal with whatever standards are foisted upon them by men.
see my "naturalized narrative" post. this community needs to read some Barthes, lol

Sure, women can dress however they want, but if they dress like a slut they have no right to complain. Same is true of guys (sagging, in case you fallas dont know is an indication that you're easy access so that someone... lets call him Tyson... can piece you up from behind balls deep).
dude i totally disagree if you mean sluttily dressed girls or guys have no right to complain about being raped. bottom line is that no matter what anybody does or wears, no person has a right to touch them without consent. just like a car dealership displaying a beautiful, shiny automobile does not authorize anybody to steal it, a person flaunting their sexiness is no green light to rape them. think poorly of them? sure. ignore them? why not. be disgusted with them? if you must. but rape them? never.

i didnt say that at all. i can see how the way it's typed could seem like that, my bad i forgot to add some words when i retyped it because i accidentally deleted the first version.

yeah... that's what i said... pardon me for not siting my sources. my post is not academically acceptable, lol
for the record, this is not accurate. sagging pants were born of two reasons:
1. in poor latino and black communities, you either wear your dad's or older bro's oversized hand-me-downs or your mom buys you pants several sizes too big. that way you can grow into 'em and get more use out of 'em.

2. in prison, you are issued pants. whatever size you are given you have to make do with. you are not allowed to possess a belt. therefore you sag. it can't be helped.

You must not have read the page, because your 'fact' is completely false.
fuck they're as academically irresponsible as i am. they never indicate where each source they list interacts with the article. i dont have time to read the entirety of all four of those works.
here's my source

peachyO I think what D J L is saying is there should be less of this "implied" shenanigans by females, it's everywhere, you can't deny that, it's more prevalent for the female gender. I'm on several forums too, and there's always some female who posts in implied sexually referenced sayings/words and shit, so annoying. I've never once seen a dude on a forum imply how big his schlong is or anything provocative for that matter, but I've seen females throw in random sexual references when they post something countless times, this can be applied to IRL stuff too. I still believe this is a catch22 discussion. And I believe they like the attention in a reasonable matter.

And, I've seen the male aspect too, I wrote a paper on Masculinity for my Sociology class, so I can discuss that too, if you want. Everyone is to blame.

Just putting it out there, but the sasuagefests at tournaments is a huge reason why I'm debating if I want to go. I don't know if I'll be able to handle all the side comments or bashing on stream. Not that I'm ugly, but I'm a girl surrounded by testosterone trying to be the best that I can be at a video game. Y'know just trying to beat the odds.

you've never heard a dude brag about his dick? what forums do you visit?:D i agree, most women like attention, so long as it's positive. i think women who use their sex in such a manner do so because society as a whole has kept every other weapon or tool away from them. sadly, it seems most men couldn't care less about how smart, kind, funny, or accomplished a woman is. just about whether they want to pork her or not. so, since most men won't give a gal the time of day if she isn't "hot", can you blame her for using the one thing of value she has? and i say it's men's fault. if men didn't value sexiness so much, it couldn't be used as a weapon against them. just like, for example, you could be offered a lifetime supply of cigarettes. if you don't smoke, it just isn't an alluring offer.

sortof the opposite in a double-negative sense. people portray themselves how they want to be seen. if people want to be taken seriously then they act in such a way as to be taken seriously. like what CrazyBread just posted, i believe that you (bread) should be able to go to a tournament and not have to worry about that. if you're there as a gamer you're there as a gamer and that's all. (back to karried) but when women, as buckley wisely put it, wear skirts up to their twats they have no right to complain about being sexualized. i dont think that's implied. i think that's very explicit. this is my pragmatic non-philosophical solution: act/dress/represent yourself how you want to be treated.
my philosophical response (the one that would make plausible the restructuring of the patriarchal narrative described in my first post (on page 4)) is probably more necessary, but most people refuse to educate themselves enough to make it viable on any sort of large scale.

I thought the same thing at first then my second thought was "Hmm the people of Edenia probably do some heavy clubbing."

I wouldn't go to a job interview or meet my accountant dressed as Jade lol. When I'm in good spirits and want to play MK and joke and gossip with friends it's fine. I'm a grown woman, I know how to dress myself when I need to be taken seriously, or run errands quickly without attracting much attention.

Which is why it can be annoying to be generalized by how we dress. When I worked at a night club with smutty waitress uniforms, I knew I would be treated... Badly at times. But I tolerated it, looked at the bright side and counted my money. May have bent a few unwanted hands bent backward :) But again, if I ever felt degraded or exploited or in danger I would have found a new job.

There are many different and interesting views on feminism. But a person's opinion of you is only as important as the person them self. So I'm not so easily offended.

The article I linked to said that it was a false urban legend and gave explanations as to the origins :).

Who hired this guy, WTF?

You see this woman here? She is and always will be the best character in Video Games because she isn't the stereotypical big bouncy tits girl. With the exception of Other M she really had a strong and awesome character.

Inb4 she was always silent = read comics and lore.

this is the narrative. women have literally everything that men have available to them (and i would dare anyone to debate me on this in any sphere be it social, legal or whatever), but they are taught from the day they are born that that is not the case. it is only when they buy into the historical narrative of their limitation that it becomes the case. That's why feminism is so important. Feminism is a rewriting of the narrative that scripts women and men as equals.

As a gay man, it doesn't bother me nor distracts me to see Mileena, Kitana, Jade, or even Sheeva dressed like dime store street walkers. However, it is utterly ridiculous. I mean, aren't these women supposed to be skilled and deadly assassins? If I had any control over outfits or victory stances etc., I'd have an alternative outfit for Cage and Jax in NOTHING but a tight speedo showing the outline of their cocks, and when they won the match they'd shake their ass like Magic Mike and give me a nice convincing wink. Now, straight men of TYM, do you see how ridiculous that would be? ;)
If it's Cage we're talking about... I could make an exception.

um sagging came from prison to tell who were homosexual just to let u know.

Shoot them. Shoot them all.
Also, has anyone noticed that if Mileena spams her air sai's over Kitana's head, Kit's breasts jiggle uncontrollably as if she was on a sinking ship? It's humorous and yet so dumb. ;)
