What non-physical items do humans need? [Philosophy]

While I personally agree with you, there are some people who would argue that humans need faith because it expresses the "truth" or natural order to the world. The search for meaning and truth is held to be an innate right to life. Faith doesn't require evidence. In my opinion, all people must be able to invest themselves in something that they are passionate about (something that most of us on TYM seem to have) as long as it does not interfere with somebody else's happiness.
But will they DIE without it? LOL I doubt it. Lack of religion wasn't fatal last time I checked :)

The name of this thread is misleading and scientifically incorrect. I vote it be changed to what do we "WANT" because that's all people have been listing so far.

That being said, we do require social interaction to remain healthy but it's not required for survival. Social interactions are something we need from an evolutionary standpoint but technology has made it less important.

They won't die but they will be unfulfilled, which could be argued to be almost as bad as death. Without truth or meaning, humans don'thave a function (which is true even outside of religion).

Humans are S+ tier. A tier of their own.
I hope that's just a failed attempt at a bad joke. If you knew how De-evolved we are in contrast to the restof evolution, you'd reconsider that statement. Seriously....look at our naked defense mechanisms - no claws, no sharp teeth, no lightning-fast strikes loaded with deadly venom nor are we brightly colored and poisonous to eat, low-speed sprints minimizing escape from predators, self-destructive behavior, the only species that kills for reasons other than to eat, ....

The only thing we have is complex brains (which is arguably our downfall) and opposable thumbs.

As a matter of fact, we would lose back to to back to back fights w/ wildcats or wild canids that are merely a fraction of our size and weight. Humans are an evolutionary DEAD-END, my friend. We are at the BOTTOM of the fucking food chain, not the top.

And by "get" I just don't mean religion. Humans are more aware, thus they need more to fulfill their survival and sanity.

You can survive on just basic sustenance that every living thing needs, but, that doesn't mean you'll be mentally healthy.

You're thinking too much.

you're not thinking enough.

The world isn't simple just because you want it to be.

And by "get" I just don't mean religion. Humans are more aware, thus they need more to fulfill their survival and sanity.

You can survive on just basic sustenance that every living thing needs, but, that doesn't mean you'll be mentally healthy.
That's not true.

We are the top of the food chain. Because of our minds. These folks are talking about nourishment for that.
We are "Naturally" bottom tier. We have no physical adaptations that would allow us to survive outside civilization.

No, this thread is for what humans need, Need, that arent physical items.

As for faith, i believe we need it.
For whatever reason, when people see that word, they automatically think of religion. While its the most popular use of the word "faith," its not the entire and correct definition.

Please stop associating the 2 as being the same thing :3

It's not possible what you are saying. Do you understand that there is NOTHING non-physical that could potentially be fatal to Homo Sapiens?

I'm requesting this thread be closed because it's an abomination to Science and reality.

Lol if we want to talk tiers, humans are definitely S. While we are very weak in terms of speed, strength and naked defense, our minds catapult us to the top. They used to say that only birds could fly, and now anybody can (with money of course). We build cities, cars, and are able to protect ourselves from creatures with superior physical prowess. Animals don't always kill for food either; they can definitely kill or injure people/animals out of self defense. Our minds definitely have the potential to be destructive, but they can also be productive and helpful to every other species. Animals don't consider the environment or the morality of their acts, they simply just exist.

I would link you to answers that would disprove that entire statement,
but then i would just be re-sending you back to this thread.

No, you're not. That's called being realistic. This thread is primarily things we would LIKE or PREFER, but if there's one thing all scientists know about every living species on the planet is that reproduction is mandatory from viruses and monerans and bacteria to elephants and whales. Other than that I haven't seen ONE THING mentioned in his thread that any extant species would perish without.

We "need" nothing more than food, water, shelter and a form of replication. You hit the nail on the fucking head without even realizing it.

It's actually just the opposite for me and I prefer to be alone. People in general make me hate life and their utter stupidity and nonsense make me want to put a gun in my mouth or drink myself into oblivion.

These are all "WANTS" and "PREFERENCES". Can anyone list something we would physically PERISH without? Science Class time, Kids. Who wants an "A" for the day? There is nothing "non-physical" that would cause us to cease existing.

Juggs , play me off
That's just a deeply misanthropic opinion. If you truly believe that, leave this forum, leave this game, leave your house, and simply walk out the door with the clothes on your back into the wilderness and tell me you will feel fulfilled.

I like music, I like culture and literature and I like education and learning about the world around me. People are deeply flawed, but most of us still need social bonds and ties, just like any other animal.

As far as it is known, we are the only animal on the planet that is self aware, ergo, why we "need" emotional fulfilment.

It doesn't express truth. I don't want to get into a religious or theological discussion because I've done that way too many times and it never goes anywhere. But faith speaks nothing about truth. People who have faith in some way or another may believe that what they have faith in is "the truth", but faith certainly does not express truth in any sense of the word.

"I just have faith" is one of the most irritating cop outs of all time. Which is why I gave up arguing about it a long time ago.

"need" refers to something you will perish without. So many educated responses, I refuse to believe everyone is unable to understand this. You just repeated what I said. We are at the BOTTOM of the food chain and will not likely survive in the wilderness, BUT we will not DIE from lack of anything that has been mentioned in this thread.

I'm not sure how else I can explain it. Everything about this thread is scientifically inaccurate. What some of you may need is not essential for others. I can survive without every single thing aforementioned and I have DONE IT BEFORE to back up my claim.

Your post is also incorrect as the majority of animals are solitary and a much smaller percentage is social or "tolerable of each other"

I would link you to answers that would disprove that entire statement,
but then i would just be re-sending you back to this thread.
I'll repeat it again in case you missed it the 1st time. NOTHING non-physical that has been mention so far will cause any species to perish by lacking it. You can argue until you are blue in the face, it will change absolutely nothing.....and you will still be wrong in the end.
Science FTW.

Fine, ill be a smart ass.

A need is a necessary desire.
A want is an unnecessary desire.

**And yes, i believe humans need wants.**

But are creativity, identity, love, trust/faith, happiness/sadness, etc. wants? Are they unnecessary [desires]?

Well, friends, thats what this whole thread is about. And it appears so far that, in fact, they are needs.

In their mind the teachings of the bible (or any faith based text) expresses the world as god intends it to be, or a general outline at least. Faith is seen as truth in the sense that their doctrine tells us the way of things. They believe in the "truth" if that makes any sense. At least, that is how I think religious people see it.

What are you going to die from set aside food, water, shelter, breathing, reproduction and excretion? I'll stfu if you can name ONE thing NON-physical, just like in the title of your thread. NEED = you'll perish without it. The whole thread is nothing but "Wants" and "preferences".

Again, it is scientifically inaccurate.
