What non-physical items do humans need? [Philosophy]

Sage Leviathan

I'm platinum mad!
Just as the title says. I would like some input from the community.
One train of thought led to another, so i ask you: what item or items does a human need that are non-physical?

I dont necessarily mean religious faith, just literal faith.
Belief and trust in a concept or object, sometimes without any proof to support your belief and trust.

What Tony Robbins says:
1. Certainty/Comfort. We all want comfort. And much of this comfort comes from certainty. Of course there is no ABSOLUTE certainty, but we want certainty the car will start, the water will flow from the tap when we turn it on and the currency we use will hold its value.
2. Variety. At the same time we want certainty, we also crave variety. Paradoxically, there needs to be enough UNcertainty to provide spice and adventure in our lives.
3. Significance. Deep down, we all want to be important. We want our life to have meaning and significance. I can imagine no worse a death than to think my life didn't matter.
4. Connection/Love. It would be hard to argue against the need for love. We want to feel part of a community. We want to be cared for and cared about.
5. Growth. There could be some people who say they don't want to grow, but I think they're simply fearful of doing so—or perhaps NOT doing so. To become better, to improve our skills, to stretch and excel may be more evident in some than others, but it's there.
6. Contribution. The desire to contribute something of value—to help others, to make the world a better place than we found it is in all of us.
But, I need flight ability. Does it cut as non-physical?

Sadness. Without knowing how it is to be sad you can't really know what it is to be happy.

Yea, everyone's probably heard this before, but whatever.

Social interaction and a sense of worth.

Without either, it's hardly surprising people turn into drunks, become homeless or put a gun in their mouth.

Maintain homeostasis. Survive long enough to reproduce before something bigger eats us.

Sorry. I'm a bit gloomy lately.
No, you're not. That's called being realistic. This thread is primarily things we would LIKE or PREFER, but if there's one thing all scientists know about every living species on the planet is that reproduction is mandatory from viruses and monerans and bacteria to elephants and whales. Other than that I haven't seen ONE THING mentioned in his thread that any extant species would perish without.

We "need" nothing more than food, water, shelter and a form of replication. You hit the nail on the fucking head without even realizing it.

Social interaction and a sense of worth.

Without either, it's hardly surprising people turn into drunks, become homeless or put a gun in their mouth.
It's actually just the opposite for me and I prefer to be alone. People in general make me hate life and their utter stupidity and nonsense make me want to put a gun in my mouth or drink myself into oblivion.

These are all "WANTS" and "PREFERENCES". Can anyone list something we would physically PERISH without? Science Class time, Kids. Who wants an "A" for the day? There is nothing "non-physical" that would cause us to cease existing.

Lol, why are we comparing humans to animal survival. -.-.
because we ARE animals, dude. We have the same genus, family and phylogeny as a plethora of Primates. Just because we don't like the "term" doesn't make it untrue. We are either animals or plants, cuz we damn sure aren't viruses, fungi or bacteria so take a pick. There's only 5 Kingdoms and "Humans" aren't one of them.

No, humans don't need faith. Some may delude themselves into thinking they do or may be too weak to handle reality, but it doesn't mean they need to believe in things that aren't real or things that lack evidence.
While I personally agree with you, there are some people who would argue that humans need faith because it expresses the "truth" or natural order to the world. The search for meaning and truth is held to be an innate right to life. Faith doesn't require evidence. In my opinion, all people must be able to invest themselves in something that they are passionate about (something that most of us on TYM seem to have) as long as it does not interfere with somebody else's happiness.
