Not to rag on ya, but whos gonna show up for a 5$ buy in tournament? Split how many ways? People who live in Dedham...no one else...

People drove 3+ hours from Connecticut for a tournament in Boston last weekend, which was also $5.

Maybe I'm the minority, but I wouldn't drive 3+ hours unless it was a $20+ buy in tournament. Right now, if I win it and its winner take all, I make like 10$ off gas money.

We don't go to win money. We go to level up and have a good time lol.

Prize money isn't the motivating factor for traveling that far. For most people it's more about meeting people new people with similar interests, or about gauging your progress as a player, or about getting hype during grand finals, or all of the above. I know I'm never going to make more from local tournaments than I spend, but I still go to every single one that I reasonably can. I just love the scene, and I love the experience of going to tournaments.

Ninj, here's the thing. If you don't want to support the scene, whatever. That just makes you useless. But what you're doing right now is actively discouraging anyone else from supporting the scene. That actually makes you worse than useless. I would politely request that you not post if you're going to be worse than useless.

Also, "what would happen if you won this tournament" should be towards the bottom of your list of concerns, somewhere around "what would happen if you got struck by lightning".

Man that was a top notch post. Remind me to thank you in person at UGS.

It wasn't my intention to discourage anyone. I'm just speaking from the other side of the fence. Yes I enjoy playing with other people - Evo2012 and Raleigh speak to that - but I'd be lying if I said winning the tournament wasn't a large motivating factor.

I have no scene near me whatsoever, which makes practicing rather difficult. Driving to a tournament is at least 3 hours, usually more. If the prize pool was bigger, you would probably attract more players. That's the only point I'm trying to make.

I'm jealous that you guys all live close enough where its not a big deal to travel to for the day.

I also kind of hate driving :). good luck

We're trying to maintain/build a scene here. We see the prize as more of a bonus. We get together, play casuals and the tournament is just a bonus. We have people drive between 1 and 3 hours to Boston for these tournaments.

Yeah and I'm heading to a DOA tournament this weekend that's 3 hours away. We're probably gonna get like 8 people lol

That's what these communities need. People who don't rely on tournaments for finances. That's what a jobs for, we play games to have fun unless you're a regular top 8 placer lol.

Pretty much what CRUM said. It would be cool to see the entry go up to $10, which would imply that the comp is a bit more serious, and might motivate some people a bit more, but the bigger picture is that we are actually having tournaments for this game in New England and are trying to get better. If we build up the scene, bigger prize money should follow, anyhow.

That being said, I was told at the last Brainbox tournament that they would be doing Mortal Kombat again, and that there would be a pot bonus. Ninj, I invite you to come and try to get at that money.

Let's play at Game Underground today (Tuesday)! This week is our last chance to get games in and level up before NEC.

Unfortunately I cannot really do weekdays until this horrible semester ends =(

I would love to help you out man, my apologies.

Ninj, if you need a place to stay when/if you ever come out to hang with us, I could help you out there. Also, im sure if you came out we could organize people to meet at my place for causals all goddamn night! My point is, if you make the drive, I think we would all agree to make it worth your while. Nobody here gives a damn about the loot, hell, im going to school to become an electrical engineer; that income will make winning MLG every 2 months pale in comparison. PLUS, we could team up and have 2 skarlets body CptXecutions kenshi =)

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Weekends are the only time I really have to do anything right now. This semester will be over in about 2 weeks though, so I'll have way more time for weekdays before December 20th.

Shame you guys can't make it this time, but we can play soon.

If anyone else wants to play before NEC, I will be at Game Underground tonight between around 8:30 p.m. and whenever they close (which might be something like 1:00 or 2:00 a.m.)!

Yeah man, that's a great degree to get. My brother is currently getting that as well, and he'll certainly be making bank after he gets out.

Sounds like a party for me...that's hard to say no to haha well let me lay out my schedule as I know it right now--
This Saturday the 8th is CPR/AED certification all day, then seeing my girlfriend at night
Weekend of the 15th I'm getting ready to fly down to NC to meet my brother on the 16th and drive ~22 hours back to Boston with him, so I'm gonna try to minimize travel that weekend
The weekend after that's the 22nd...I might be able to swing something then, but it's close to Christmas (and my birthday on the 24th) so I'm uncertain whether that's a good time in general.

Looks like the weekend of January 5th is the best bet, with the weekend of the 22nd being something I can keep you guys updated on. How's that sound?

Weekend of January 12, 2013. Deftonesrc asked me to come down to the area and drink, party and play. I can do this, so let's get crazy.

I don't know details of everyone who lives nearby or I'd tag you all.

I can bring an evo Asus 22" monitor and XBL setup.

As for your post. I'm down. I can bring my stuff and I should have an ASUS by then. I think a mini tournament is a must if we can get around 10-12 people

I actually might be able to go this time, only thing is I'm seeing you guys plan on drinking, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only underage one that would be there. I don't intend to be involved in the drinking for obvious reasons, just don't wanna get you guys in trouble, someone calls in a noise complaint or something, cops come to tell us to quiet down, and its downhill from there :p
Basically I'm saying I would take no personal offense if you guys would prefer I sat this one out.

I won't be drinking either. Although I will be of age.... Anyway what would it matter if we're drinking or not?

I'll be at the APEX major on that weekend. If you all change the date, I should be able to make it. If not, have a great time.
