The purpose of the continuation rule is simply this: MLG does not want you to go home having actually won more games/rounds against your opponent, than they wont against you. If you win 3-0, then lose 3-2, your opponent only netted 3 wins to your 5, who, really, was the better player? Obviously there is some argument to be made that the person who won 3-2 in the losers bracket did so under pressure, but that shouldn't excuse being a complete pushover in the winners bracket, nor should those winner bracket results be devalued or seemingly be worth less.
This is a rule that has been with MLG since the beginning, and it is an interesting and different rule, no doubt. MK9 is not the first community to complain about it, in fact, most (all) have complained for more than a half-decade now. The reason for this is simply because the rule does not follow the status quo - it is not actually because the rule is worse. The continuation rule is simply different from the norm.
Also, how did things run this weekend in my absence? I should (will) be back next event.
