TEST YOUR SPEED!

Yeah, my upload speed fluctuates as well, sometimes it's as low as 2mbs. But yeah, they're both important, you need a decent DL speed and upload speed - which is why FiOS is so good because the upload speed is generally 30mbs or above.
If I remember correctly... the download speed is how fast your connection receives information (your opponents inputs) and the upload is how fast your information is sent out (your inputs) ... so if you have a bad upload speed, you're going to lag no matter what... put on top of that distance/ping and the speed difference b/w each player's internet and there's where all the complaining comes from.

I'd post my speed, but I'm at work, this isn't the connection I play on. lol

Yup, that is correct. Oddly the best online game I've played was against someone in Canada. No problem AA'ing one another. But, you know, that was 1/7,000 roughly...yeah I don't have the tolerance for online lol. It just makes me play like shit offline to be totally honest and I'm not intending on going back to it due to those bad habits I developed.

I don't get much of the ping idea, but for watching the others speeds around the forum, it seems that, the greater ping, the shitier
from what i know i think ping is how many milliseconds behind your connection is when online. not 100% certain but thats what i heard

People need to realise that the tests they are doing are to the server that is nearest to them which is why in most cases each graphic is saying <50 miles.

This is not realistic or relevant to you unless you happen to live less than 50 miles from game servers or other people you are playing. Gaming is either done on a 3rd party server or peer to peer so to find out a more useful speed indication you need to find out which server is nearest the game server you are playing or the people you are playing.

With MK9, you connect to a central server for the chat etc then I'm not sure if you go peer to peer when you connect to someone but assuming it's p2p then try finding the server on speedtest.net that is nearest the people you play and you'll see a reduced speed and increased ping.

Also none of this takes into account the actual net code and routing code that orchestrates the traffic and NRS netcode is abysmal.

Or maybe it's the people he plays against that have speeds significantly worse than his. I play a select few online and I AA just fine...I can do everything I can online that I can off. I use to not be able to and I blamed the netcode, but then I realized I sucked and wasn't positioned on the screen at the right sweet spot.
that falls under the poor netcode part of my comment :p

Don't even go there Arez. I CAN NOT get a faster internet connection. I'm at barely over 1 mb/s. It isn't offered in my area. I can usually play mk fairly decently. The difference is any other game I choose to play it runs exactly how it should. I'm not claiming it to be a lag free game (mw3, starhawk, other fighting games, etc.), but at least it doesn't put me into a lobby and then tell me the session is no longer available. Which, even people with their good, above average connections seem to suffer from.
LOL When someone says you have a shitty connection it doesn't mean they are personally insulting you. Sometimes i think people who take it personal have mental issues. it's a fucking internet connection people.....it's not like someone just slapped your mom in front of you. WHY do people ALWAYS take offense to it?

Considering how huge the internet is now, it's massively embarrassing that people are forced to rely on shitty internet in some places still. We're already approaching the Gb/s territory (Chattanooga, TN, is actually the one place in the US that has 1GB/s internet), and people are still unable to get at least cable internet (myself included).

Fucking...omg. Pisses me off just thinking about it. I want to move to Chattanooga already.

Please do! Then I'd have someone close by to play! haha

People take offense to everything on these forums though. I can say the sky is blue and somebody will get pissed; that's internet anonymity for you. If someone genuinely cannot afford a decent internet connection (it's not that expensive but shit happens) or is in a country that has god awful 'bandwith' then they just shouldn't play online, period.

Done.

(Pittsburg is 6-8 hours away, still fast)

to fucking Miami, Florida, which is 1,000 miles away or so...still fast

to ALASKA, factoring 4 time zone differences

Sydney, Australia, nearly 10,000 miles away LOLOLOL

Tokyo, Japan

as far south as I could find in Argentina

Right, but the part that doesn't make any sense is why do THEY think they have the right to get mad over it when WE are the people who pay extra for gaming internet and we have to torture ourselves by trying to play THEM? Like "damn, could you BE a little more selfish?" When we switched over from DSL to cable, it was a mere $5 more per month....plus we got like 80 channels and that included phone, internet, etc.

does wifi make a difference in speed? and i didnt expect this to blow up
YES. it cuts it in half, at LEAST.

Hold on, Tennesse is the first place in the US to actually get their shit together outside of Los Angeles and New York? Does anywhere else even have FiOS? I can't seem to find any other major city that does. Maybe Philly. But yeah, the 'standard' in the US is absolute piss. South Korea, Japan and a bunch of other countries have great standards but ours is garbage, and there's even worse countries than us out there...

I would murder someone if I had to use DSL at that speed though...

Yes, of all places. Tennessee.

I've been to Tennessee...there's areas in the state where I don't think people even know what the internet is...lol

$350 a month is a lot, but at least the option is there. Verizon has their FiOS service but they're in no rush to start that shit anywhere else, it pisses me off. I guess they have enough of a monopoly on cellphones since they're the only provider that doesn't flat out suck/drop service everywhere. I don't know why we haven't done away with DSL by now, or how it even became an option in the first place, DSL has always been awful and Cable was the first to come around. Hell, my phone operates through my cable.

if you want to make a shit ton of money.... find a way to rework the way internet is provided.

There is absolutely NO reason that areas should have ONE provider that monopolizes and overprices internet.
US is lazy as fuck when it comes to changing things that would actually HELP everyone.
Google's trying to, hopefully they can. I don't mind a monopoly as long as they provide a good service but the majority of them do not.
