Haha! Yea, Blatoise is over-rated. Joking aside though.
Please no Kenshi....God I hate Kenshi.
idk man that might be what i end up going with, i really like his design, his alt costume looks bad ass, he can zone, i like rushing with him. it all clicks. hes no scorp, but he just do the trick

Give Ermac a try maybe. Thats basically the one and only character for me so maybe I too should be asking for help. I do a bit of spacing/rushdown depending on my level of comfort with the opponent.

My advice. Main character should be your favourite character. Then if you want to build a team around that character, then have one or two characters that cover all facets of the game.

e.g. my main is Sub Zero. He has bad match-ups so I have someone like Sektor, who is mainly zoning and anti-zoning to cover those match-ups. I then have a rushdown character in Johnny Cage. I also however have that problem of playing too many characters.

My team: Sub Zero, Johnny Cage, Sektor, Nightwolf, Kenshi (in the works), Reptile (in the works), Shang Tsung (might pick him up).

I just like too many characters to stick to a few...it kills me.

Bro Im the same way. Im mostly consistent when it comes to Kung Lao, but besides him, Im dropping and picking characters left and right. Ive tried maining most of the cast besides Sheeva, Stryker, Jade, Rain, Baraka and Scarlet (I dont have her or Freddy). Everyone else, I've spent at least a couple hours in the lab learning their bnb's but soon after dropped them. My most consistent characters are probably

Kung Lao, Kitana, Johnny Cage
Secondaries are probably along the lines of: Raiden, Sektor, Cyrax, Reptile, Ermac, and hopefully, Shang Tsung. Im trying to get better with Shang, since hes my favorite to play, but Im just not as good with him as my other characters.

Is there a solution to this problem. I must have dropped Shang and Nightwolf 4 times already and then come back. On the one hand I think it's awesome just playing one or two characters and you look at yourself and think, "yeah I represent X". The problem is I like playing with too many. Ideally for a tournament setting I would only use 3 of those characters: Sub Zero (main), Cage and Sektor (if counter-picking is necessary). But I really want to get Shang, Reptile, Kenshi and Nightwolf up to that level as well lol.

Yeah same here, Ive tried maining Shang twice already, but have dropped him again and again. I love playing a lot of characters and I can play them at a pretty decent to high level, however, Im not focusing enough on my particular mains and its showing. I seriously need to consider dropping everyone except for 1-2 characters. They are probably going to be Cage and Kung Lao.

trust me you say that now (as I did in the past as well) but soon enough you'll be picking them up like it's half price at the Red Light District. I have a concrete tournament team but I want to play with more lol...

Sounds like you've already made up your mind.

My advice would be to play whoever suits you best. If you think that's Kenshi, then go Kenshi. Also, your main should probably be someone you like and not just a character whose style meshes with you. Otherwise, you'll get bored of seeing that character and want someone else.

I'd also recommend trying everyone out a little bit. Though, that leads to the problem I and the two posters above me have... the "I want to play everyone" syndrome. haha

I mostly stick with Sub-Zero, Raiden, and Smoke these days... but Liu Kang, Kenshi, and JC are all still in the works. lol

yeah i think for the most part kenshi will be who i stick with. but i did pick him because i enjoy the character himself, not just the playstyle. hes a blind dude with a sword, whats not to love? and he can counter jc, and im hoping he can keep kabal from shooting all day as well, thusly covering my least favorite characters to fight.

and im the same exact way. i play Scorp, kenshi, quan, cyrax, jax, sonya, smoke, baraka, and the occasional csz all the time, as well as learning the basic bnbs of numerious characters including shang and sub.

i look at it as learning what my opponents can do, i know that im no master kabal, but it does help me at least to play with him a little just to understand. nothing helps you find holes in your opponents game more than having someone poke wholes in your own.

however if i plan on attending gga more, and thusly more tournaments, i think i need to buckle down and learn the fuck out of a character instead of dividing my attention amongst so many.

Lol thing is, Im a college student living in the dorms, who plays MK9 as a hobby and as a past time in Chicago. I dont know of any offline scene here nor about any local tournaments. The only practice I get is watching videos of players, playing online, and playing against my friend who is just as good as me. Id love to attend a tournament, but I dont know of any here in Chicago.

Sektor is really fun to play, but is neither a rushdown or zoning character. His game revolves around footsties and if that doesn't appeal to you then you shouldn't pick him up. He's also not going to make Kabals free either, so if that's your primary reason for wanting to pick him up then you would probably be better off finding a character more suited to you that at least goes even with him.

dude gga is huge, 2nd biggest arcade in the country, and huge for a the local mk scene. every thursday casuals are held, as well as streamed. Medina runs the GGA stream, and medina runs himself plenty of amazing tourney streams as well

Dude, you're gonna have to work on your spacing and footsies with ANY character. It's an essential part of the game. Otherwise, it won't matter who you pick.

Ever tried picking Noob Saibot to spam them since you can't beat them outright? Well, it's harder than it looks. If you don't space yourself right and know when to throw which clone, they will get in, and the WILL blow you up.

That's why Sub will always be my main even if he isn't that great. I'm the best at footsies with him.

im not saying i cant do footsies, i jsut dont wanna play a very footsie heavy character, that relies as much as sektor on them. i never spam with noob because i cant beat people outright, rarely do i meet people that completely obliterate me, and im not the type to get but hurt and resort to spamming for a win. yes its a viable strategy, but its one that lacks honor and nobility, and i will not stoop to that level

That was just an example to show how important those things can be. Point is, whether you pick Kenshi or Jade or someone in b/w... footsies are essential.

Whoever you should main is dependent on your play style but just for an FYI Baraka is not a counter pick for Sub Zero, thats a 6-4 matchup in Subs Favor.

i strongly disagree good sir. i think that sub is a terrible character, and is easily blown up by characters with armor
