What's new

I need to commit to a main.

Alright so im struggling to decide who I want to have as a main for MK9. Recently, my plan was to main scorp, with sonya as an alt, and baraka as a counter for SZ. However after watching MLG and seeing how much JC there was, and knowing full well that JC (i personally think he is breaking the game , but thats an entirely different topic) will only be showing up more and more i figured i should possibly consider a better main. then i was watching KTP and reo essentially said that you cant go anywhere with one character, and that you have to have a pool of characters which solidified my choice to swap.

unfortunately i dont think that scorp has what it takes, perhaps i could use him in matchups im extremely familiar or at least confident in, but against the more prominent characters scorp just doesnt contend with them and his vortex is far to risky.

so i need a new main, and someone that can compete as i intend on frequenting GGA much more in the future.

characters im interested in:
Kenshi - decent zoning, i really enjoy his options and rushdown kenshi has so far been a good time, also hes a viable counter to JC
Smoke - Good at everything pretty much, always appealed to me
Jax - i love his rush down, its so fast and fun
Sonya - i need to get military stance down better, but her speed is incredible and i love her pressure
Quan Chi - not tourney viable but I think the rune trap is one of the coolest things in this game, and i love using it. WOOLAY
Sektor - interesting character, and Reo at least claims hes a tough MU for Kabal, and i for sure need an answer for kabal, since i get blown up by kabals all the time, regardless of who i play as.

Quan is tourney viable, but will require a pocket character or two. Goes 5-5 with Jax and Kabal for instance. 4-6 with Cage but it's winnable imo. Having the best comeback factor in the game even makes his bad MUs winnable when played correctly.

Quan's not the easiest character to start with, I'd say, as he requires you to play pretty intelligently and conserve your meter and look for opportunities to capitalize on it.

Are you a rushdown player or a zoner, basically?
i like doing both honestly, depends on the situation. i love playing rush down kenshi, but im just as comfortable keeping mileena, jax, and JC far the fuck away from me.

Well, if you want to commit, find your most comfortable playstyle. I am a keepaway player for instance, I really on footises and spacing as the core of my game. I also like to make people chase me so I can easily punish their mistakes.

yeah hes for sure not easy to learn. im ok with him, and his comback factor is phenominal, ive clutched so many times with him. but i do need to level up my game with him for certain, and i know that alot of my rune traps come from people simply not realizing that the2 in f12 is a low

i like playing run away with smoke, but i feel like only kitana, freddy, kabal, and smoke have solid runaway potential, and only smoke really appeals to me out of all of those. i feel like im leaning more and more toward kenshi, just because he can zone if i need him too, and i also can pressure with him. but i want to give sektor at least some solid practice to feel out what he is/isnt capable of

I think you should go with Kenshi. I really have been liking him so far, and hes fun to play as. Its all personal prefer ence though imo.

You will never keep a mileena player away... lol

What about Liu Kang? Jack-of-all-trades yet master of none if I recall correctly.
i honestly loath characters whos combos essentially consist of repeating the same string over and over again. to me, combos gotta look cool, and b312 all day doesnt look co0l, its also why i never solidly took on smoke, but smokes a really solid character and i always loved him as a kid

He doesn't have to do b312 all day, but most certainly recommended. I barely combo with him anymore, b32, f3, f12, f4, DS, are all great mixups for him. Anywaaaays, alot of his other combos are very flashy and cool. (eg. b312, f12, 12b1, bicycle kicks). Thought it was worth a shot. I only know of like five Liu players. Man, we need more Liu...

if LK had a better wake up game, id give him a shot legit. but the fact that hes just terrible on wake up, coupled with the repeat strings just makes him unappealing. ive seen some cool shit and i respect the character, hes just not for me

Then go with Squirtle. His wake-up game is formidable, though his damage output is lacking....
