Considering WB announced their plan of focusing on live service games, I just don't see them doing Shaolin Monks style game at this time. Though I would love to see it.

I think they go for Injustice 3 or a comparable DC fighter. It appears that they cut development on that to switch to MK1 so I figure they will try to finish what they started. Both games were very successful.

But at the same time, WB also announced that they will focus on certain franchises and mentioned MK, and I believe MK is a way bigger seller than Injustice was. So maybe they will just go into MK2. It's the safest option for them, and even with the criticism, MK1 did pretty well.

As much as I love MK… If NRS keeps going down this route I think I might just stop playing any games from them altogether TBH. I’ve always strictly played MK games for fighting games but MK1 literally made me want more that now I’m a Street Fighter/Tekken fan.

My opinion? Let them gather their criticisms, and actually work on something that can be universally loved. Whatever their next game is I’m gonna have a major side-eye.

INJ3 new James Gunn DCU is being ushered in and they probably want a piece of that. Gunn also said videogames would likely be included in the main story too.

Now that the DCU is being rebooted by James Gunn I’m HOPING it’s IJ3…

but maybe it’ll be something else to fill in till the next MK game..?

I actually wouldn’t mind it being Injustice 3. But I would honestly like it to have no legacy stuff. That or a completely new IP. Problem is that MK is by far their best selling game. So who knows, but I DO think they planned on MK1 performing a bit better than it did. Even though it did just fine, maybe they were expecting a lot more or something? This is just speculation based on the definitive edition being released.

Regardless, hopefully we get some news about it within the next year or so

This never happens with any fighting game. Odds are slim to none that they're going to make an MK game that you specifically love, even if they take 5 years and invite you to help build it.

I hope they remaster MK9 or any of the 3D games (Deception, DA) while they take proper development time on the next MK game.
Remastered MK9 would be nice, although I don't think it'll sell as much as the MK9 heads think it will. "Proper development time" is tough, there are financial decisions that play into these things.

Injustice 3 would be cool, although I'm curious what the licensing situation is right now. I'd probably put the odds at 60/30/10 in terms of MK/INJ3/Some other kind of game.

If they make another MK game, how do they continue the story? They literally just did the "we blew up the timeline and now everything is different", so I think it'd be a bit jarring if they try and do the Reset option again to go back to original character setups.

I think they will just continue it off the end of mk1.... there will not be a massive reset.... but a direct continue. So thinks like sector / cyrax / noob / etc etc... that is all cannon now and for the foreseeable future.

They pick from mk1, and somewhere along the way some of the characters die and are replaced by the original characters (kuai liang scorpion dies and liu kang or someone summons Hanzo Scorpion from another timeline, taking his place, for example). They then invent some kamidogu mumbo jumbo with the hourglass and the multiverse doors are closed forever. That's the only way I can think it would work.

Yeah, that's probably what they are gonna do. Obviously there is no reason to do another reset. At the very least, MK13 and MK14 will continue the story of MK1. As for MK13, I think it will be a smaller storyline, just like MKX was a smaller story compared to MK9 and MK11 in terms of emergency and stakes, as we had the big starting blowout in MK1, just like we got in MK9.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. They need a way to close the Multiverse/Timeline loop. I just a get a little tonal whiplash from it though.

It's probably gonna happen, but most likely it won't happen before MK14. Or maybe they will keep it going post MK14 but only in a much smaller scale. Who knows
