I think with any changes the whole "multiverse" concept is dated and worn out. Everyone is over shows, movies, games, having the multiverse so I think it was bad timing and a few years late for MK1 to do more of it yet again when they could have went with a more grounded game with Liu creating 1 world starting over. That was probably the hardest hit to the story. No one wanted another multiverse type story and it's exactly what we got at 200%.

The other I would say is the mass changes to characters. People like change in the overall game, but not in their long time favorites or known characters being removed or heavily altered. And not in the "Cyrax is a girl" way, or "Hanzo is gone way" either. For example, one of my friends who is the ultimate MK casual didn't like the story (and she liked all the other games story), and her responses were things like "why is Shao Khan such a sucker now?" and "why did they make Baraka a good guy? Ugh everyone is a good guy." and "Johnny Cage was pretty cool". My guess is Cage was cool because he was the Cage she was expecting, and not hero Reptile or something. These things didn't go over as well with casuals as much as they thought. And she didn't buy Khaos Reign, but she bought the DLC from X and 11. Just one person, but I think it's a good example of the way casual players saw it and why I believe Khaos Reign leaks about underperforming because a few people I know that bought all the MK11 DLC didn't buy it. Ultimately they are the one's that buy the game and bring in the money.

SF had to fix their game and story after the 3rd strike era that almost tanked the company, and they went with SF4, a traditional gameplay and story that people loved. Tekken almost tanked after T4 with those abomination changes, so they went back to the roots with Tekken 5 which is considered largely the best game in the series.

For MK1 I really think they need to go back to some basics. Basic gameplay with deep characters, 1 on 1 before they started adding all the extra stuff. Basic story about Mortal Kombat with someone trying to threaten the realm and a hero beats them without 100 versions of Scorpion being involved. Traditional version of characters like how you'd think of them in MK3 or MK9. Just do what most people want without drinking your own koolaid and go from there lol.
Tbf I think it’s obvious that Barakas going to turn heel when the disease fully takes over though and reptile never made sense as a bad guy in the first place, being a servant for thousands of years to some of the biggest liars in the MK universe for the revival of your race of people(that I’m pretty sure they killed) is All Star Batman levels of bad writing lol.

Rains turn was stupid though but he’s always been written stupid, they should have leaned in on the Argus thing a lot more and made him the black adam/Dr Doom of Edenia instead of just making him another treacherous weasel character in a universe full of them.

Dude should be giving sindels family the boot and trying to put Shao Kahn’s head on a stick.

Yea Rain feels like a character that always underachieves his arcs in every MK, but always gets added because he's popular enough to stick around lol. The whole time I was waiting for Mileena to do something Mileena-ish in the game too but they were like "nah bruh this ain't that type of game" haha.

For Mileena, they completely changed her again. I say again because the Mileena we got in the Alternate Timeline is a very different person from the Mileena we had in the original timeline. We've had 3 different versions in the 3 different timelines thus far.

New Mileena sucks. Bi Han is the only character that isn’t boring as shit.
  • he’s funnier than Cage, who no longer makes funny jokes and is just a pop culture reference machine for redditors. Bi Han’s lacking self awareness and mocking orphans is actually funny.
  • He’s evil but with a lowercase “e”, he’s really just a Lin Kuei purist. He shows concern for Scorpion’s and Smoke’s safety before they left him, then when they do he’s like fuck em. They squandered the only interesting true neural character.
  • everyone else is shit
Kuai Liang Sub was my favorite but the new one is extremely lame.

Right lol that's kinda what I was hinting about earlier about one of the reasons it doesn't work. It was like remaking for the sake of remaking with no consistent direction. Like you could have named the character 3 different names and you wouldn't have known which one is supposed to be Mileena. Hopefully MK2 doesn't give the 4th version, Mileena the earthrealm champion or something.

Bi-Han I felt had one of the best arcs of the new story, his "for the greater good" warped by his own ego, then regressing into the evil side because of it was great. It felt like something you see as a character devolves in a good movie. Very well done. Now Hanzo as Scorpion, well, I've already said all that needed to be said about my opinion there lol.

For Mileena, it's actually the alternate timeline version that makes the least sense. With Mortal Kombat (2011) being a direct sequel to Mortal Kombat Armageddon_, Mileena should generally be the same person from the original timeline, but we have her being created during the Outworld tournament and be very immature/feral/impulsive. Her origin is completely different and at a completely different point in the story.

One of my personal theories is that between "Armageddon" and the Alternate Timeline, there was already one (or more) Kronika time resets. This would account for the changes to Mileena and all the other continuity errors present in Mortal Kombat (2011), i.e. the Lin Kuei working with Shang during the Shaolin Tournament, Sheeva, Baraka, Nightwolf, Cyrax, Sektor being there, etc.

For New Era Mileena, Lui Kang obviously changed her, and Kitana's fate, for reasons of his own. It may be odd, but it does make sense for the course of the story they were telling.

Personally though, I liked Alternate Timeline Mileena the best. She had a pretty good story arc in both Mortal Kombat (2011), Mortal Kombat XL, and the comics.

Your post is absolute proof why the story needs to be simplified going forward LOL! This isn't Inception or something.

So if I were to make a Mortal Kombat game, here's what I would do.

Bear in mind this is all very cringe and fanfic-y. I am self aware. But let me cook:

So after MKX, we have Dark Raiden. He's done fucking around. Done playing defense. He reasons that if he starts taking realms for Earthrealm, then there will be fewer threats left. You can't invade his realm and fuck shit up if he does it first. That kind of thing.

When he proposes this to the Earthrealm Warriors, they're not okay with it. They just finished fighting off Netherrealm. They want peace. Naturally, Johnny is very vocally opposed to this. He gets in Raiden's face. Says he's not going to risk his family in some pointless war of aggression. So Raiden just fucking kills him.

Naturally, this enrages Sonya, the Kombat Kids, etc and the first chapter is Raiden just beating the tar out of five Special Forces that try to challenge him. After that? They've no choice but to be on board. You're either aiding in Earthrealm's "defense," or you're an enemy.

So who does Raiden invade first? Outworld. They have history, he's still pissed about Shao Kahn's invasion and "blames" the Emperor and his realm for him killing his best friend, Liu Kang.

"Were it not for their foolish invasion, The White Lotus Society and Liu Kang would still live."

Something like that. Homie has lost the plot.

So the next chapter is Kotal Kahn. We still have him, Ermac, Reptile, Ferra/Torr, D'Vorah, etc from MKX. He's trying to decide what should be done with Tanya and Rain when Raiden pulls up with Jax and Kung Jin.

Dark Raiden challenges Outworld to Mortal Kombat. Kotal Kahn has one year to assemble his champions.

Kotal is all, "And if I refuse?"

Raiden says something like, "Then we will bring the full military might of Earthrealm here and Kotal, we have bombs large enough to annihilate whole cities. I'm willing to give you a chance through Kombat, but we can go the other way if you want."

Kotal is all, "The Elder Gods would never allow such barbarism."

"Wrong, Kotal. If one of mine has been taken by your realm, I'm allowed to cross over and reclaim them."

That's when Raiden just grabs Kung Jin and tosses him at Kotal's feet.

"Oh look, you just took one of my warriors. One year, Kotal Kahn."

Kung Jin is shook. Jax is shook. Raiden teleports himself and Jax away.

Kotal Kahn now has to assemble a defense for Outworld.

You could have Skarlet return as an orphan that Kotal teaches blood magic to.

Tanya and Rain fight for Kotal in exchange for full pardons.

Wanting a chance to kill Kotal for Goro's murder in the comics, Kintaro joins the tournament not on Outworld's side, but on Earthrealm's.

This is mostly just me spitballing but I think it has legs.

And at some point Blade played by Wesly Snipes shows up, and he's playable and not even a guest he's literally in MK lore now and NRS sells 10,000,000,000 new copies.

I want Earthrealm to be the bad guys at least once, I don’t know why they fucked up Dark Raiden so bad in MK11. The MKX post credit went so hard just for it to be lackluster in the end.

I think the story mode being God awful hurts the game worse than competitive players wanna admit.

It makes your average player invested and want to keep playing, if a game and its characters are fascinating to people, they’ll be more likely to keep at it and try to improve. If it becomes unappealing from deviating to what they like too much, they’ll say fuck it. If less people play and stop spending money, namely the casuals, NRS will stop working on the game which damages it as a competitive game.

MK1 genuinely is the most fun NRS game, but only if I shut off emotions and engage with it like a robot and pretend I don’t find it very unappealing compared to MK9’s vibe.

Idk I’m not feeling the whole Earthrealm as the bad guy thing at all. Especially against Outworld. Like isn’t Outworld just an amalgation of realms that have been conquered and merged to it. Edenia, Zaterra, and Vaeternus right? Like Outworld is the bad guy BECAUSE it kills realms.

Raiden has every right to go ballistic and psycho because Outworld (and shao kahn in particular) have a habit of conquering realms. So seeing Earth as the bad guy is kinda hard. Him going Dark Raiden is just basically well my altruistic shit isn’t working so fuck everybody. I’m defending this shit lethally.

Now you can have Reptile or traditionally bad guys want to defect and help earth because they’ve seen what happens to realms once they’re conquered, but the realm trying to be absorbed as the bad guy? Idk if that works.
