How would you change MK9 in a potential remaster?

I think part of the problem with communication in this thread is different people seem to define "remaster" in a different light.

I'm seeing "remaster" used to describe "re-releases" and in a few instances, "remakes."
Remaster and remake are nebulous terms that are used interchangeably a lot anyways. There's no real definition on what any of them is unfortunately

That's not true, actually. Here's an article that explains the difference between the three terms.

Just because people regularly misuse them, doesn't mean they actually aren't properly defined.

Good to know that I was using the exact correct definition of all of these without ever having them defined to me.

Same; I only found this formal definition looking this up now for this very thread, as to me at least, it seems pretty self-evident.

Having said that, lots of people do use "remaster" to cover all three cases, which is confusing and misleading, of course.

They aren't defined and set in stone, though. Language is fluid and words will carry different meanings for different people. While I absolutely agree with what the article says, things get nebulous very quickly when you start discussing the wide bevy of rereleases out there. The line between everything starts to blur greatly and while I can't place any of the examples off the top of my head (if my memory decides to cooperate soon I'll update this comment) I know I have absolutely seen tons of really interesting discussions that pose the question of what is or isn't a rerelease/remaster/remake.

There are well defined (and mostly agreed upon) guidelines for what the terms mean, but there is no true definition.

Edit the story and put him in. Make him a part of MK Universe proper, that way he can just be part of the main kast in the next games.
I played Story Mode for the first time since launch last month, and in the Kronika final battle, she summoned Spawn to fight Fire God Liu Kang. Looks like the game didn't factor out guest characters in that randomization.

So Robocop could actually be in Story Mode as a result.

Yea, my original point didn't even mention a graphical remaster. Maybe you just pretended I said that, but I promise you I didn't.

"The notion that it couldn't be $20-30 and be an updated edition with the Vita costumes, expanded training mode, rollback and some bugfixes is pretty far offbase imo."

That's what I said. Expanded training modes and rollback aren't uncommon in these remasters, its actually the norm. Adding in the Vita outfits likely would take little to no effort and fixing some bugs shouldn't prove too difficult provided they have the source code. There are PC mods that have fixed some of the infamous ones so I don't think its at all out of the question.

I even straight up said I had no fucking idea what you were talking about in the original comment I replied to because it was 100% incoherent. It was next to impossible what you were saying the remaster could or couldn't be.
I don't know why you keep yelling at me about this thing that can't exist and therefore doesn't and never will but if it makes you feel better to tell me about it, go to town. I'm sure you've figured it out better than all the devs and marketers at WB. What they're really missing is a smart guy like you on the team.

Just like that next gen Bloody Roar reboot that I'm confident would be totally worth it.

I'm glad you finally admit you were wrong even if its in a very roundabout way.

Holy shit I had no idea this happened, that's incredible.

Yeah. I'm guessing the game randomly grabs a character from the Roster, and since there were no guest characters at launch, the randomization can grab them as well!

I wouldn’t. Add more modes, costumes and characters. What made MK9 so great and fun is because it was comically broken and half the hype came from when a low-tier character came close to, or even straight up beat a high tier character. MK9 had some of the biggest impact on my personal life in so many ways. I wouldn’t change it at its base. If they came out with a remaster, I potentially wouldn’t even touch the newer ones again to be honest.

MK9 was fun, and that's what games can also be, just fun.

Ideally would be balancing high/low tier chars. and fixing the bugs. But even than, they don't need to be major to breath life in MK9.

Mk9 is a love letter to the fans and playing it online again alone is a reason to buy it for me.

How about some modifying to what already is the best NRS storymode? Remove the scene where Sindel kills everyone and instead have the heroes their their own deaths from different villains. The slower pacing of that should give off a greater feeling of dread that pushes Liu Kang to turn on Raiden, and as a plus the story would be longer.

Even tho that would make sense, it already makes sense at it is. I’m also not really a fan of a retcon for a remaster. The story is already developed, I think it should just stay as is.

MK9's story is a pretty sad affair. Replaying it, its clear that the only care put into it was to make sure every character repeated an iconic moment or rivalry from the previous games even if that means having horrible pacing, no character development and a nonsensical plot. I'd honestly love to see them tighten the screws a bit there. I don't think it would fix the story, but I don't necessarily want it fixed. I'd just enjoy a more polished and well thought out mode.

Other than the one time a notable Sheeva beat a notable Kabal and Tom Brady making a couple top 8s with Sub Zero, how often do you remember low/bottom tiers doing anything but drowning in pools and those players straight up leaving the game competitively or switching to top tier after a year? I may not have played much back then but I definitely watched avidly and the most you'd get were players like Sonicfox making an upper mid tier like Mileena look good along with some Sektor players.

I'm genuinely ok with not changing the top tiers even though I definitely want Kung Lao to have his legs chopped off. But I really don't see why characters like Jade, Sheeva and the rest of the bottom 10 shouldn't get some minor tune-ups to make them more comparable.

I think every character outside of the top 8-10 or so be 100% unplayable at high level (let alone top level) just wouldn't make the game last long for spectators or players alike. I hope that if it ever does happen and they decide to not change balance that it wouldn't die out immediately, but I would honestly be confident in saying that all of the people who say they wouldn't want Sheeva to not be in FFFFFFFFFFF tier won't play the game for very long and the scene would be a small side tournament at majors like it is now. I can already see the sarcastic threads now, "So to everyone who wanted no changes, where are you now???". The most it would do is give people who don't have PCs a way to play it on modern platforms. But I'm already playing this game everyday on my PC and even playing against other people online. I don't really want a remaster if the only change would be a better training mode and better netcode, even if those would be super duper dope.

Rambling a lot here, but yea. I don't think anyone suggesting balance changes for MK9 doesn't want the game to remain broken. There is a very stark difference between a game being broken in a fun way and 75% of the roster being unplayable in tournament and losing so badly to the top 25% that they might as well just forfeit against a decent player. If anything buffing the lower tier characters would make the game even MORE broken and crazy, isn't that what ya'll like MK9 for? I know that's what I like it for, so more broken characters that can at least attempt to hang with the big bois sounds like music to my ears.

MK9 was fun because it did some things really well. Good roster, classic stages remastered, fun content (kombat kodes, classic music, classic costumes, challange tower) And the gameplay was really fun. It allowed players to be creative. Combo's did not require meter perse and were much more diverse than Mk11 for example.

MK9 is just goated in so many ways. I especially miss the days of having set, curated Challenge Towers
