Well, I fucking hated Lambert's Raiden because his hissing voice, mocking laugh and general I'm-just-here-for-the-paycheck persona all but ruined Raiden for me.

He was as horrible as the Kano actor was awesome.
I haven’t liked ANY Raiden actor, TBH.
That Raiden is fo’ whipeepo

I wonder if the skin for Bridgette Wilson's Sonya will actually have unique dialogue towards the recently added characters. Because apparently NRS couldn't get Ronda Rousey back to record new lines for Sonya's intros with Rain, Mileena and Rambo and instead just recycle dialogue she has with other characters. The same applies with other characters such as Shang Tsung, Spawn, the Vegas version of Sub-Zero etc. Which could be due to them not being available or having to pay them more money than those that regularly do voice acting.

Saying that Lambert perfected Raiden by being arrogant and a smart ass is like saying Arnold perfected Mr Freeze by being a one-liner machine. To each his own, of course, but I just don't think that Lambert did the character justice.

Then again, he wasn't the only one guilty of this. Liu Kang is portrayed as someone who doesn't believe in the Tournament and its importance, Sub Zero and Scorpion are little more than zombies who know martial arts, etc.

As far as being loyal to the source material it's a clusterfuck, but it is understandable considering the era it was made in.
From his origin he was definitely arrogant. Lambert, the writers and directors built on that with a touch of humour yet still solemn and respecting Elder Gods and rules. Of course that's Hollywood as well, but I liked a light touch to Raiden. I actually prefer the more serious devout god being Fujin and the more sinister, crazy, dark yet a bit of a smart ass who won't back down from breaking the rules in Raiden. In 11 they've kind of mixed it all up a bit, though Raiden is full on serious, yet still has the touch of arrogance. But from the start wanted to be seen as a god, thinking he knows everything, has little faith in earthlings and just wants them to do the job. It's only later he develops a relationship of understanding and empathy. He has a tendency to darkness as well, which doesn't even come out in the movie, since MK1.

Yeah, to be fair - Raiden is a character who basically started as Havik on steroids to Splinter achieving godhood.

My personal opinion that the characters in the games had more or less a vague personality and it wasn't until MK9 with the story mode that we started to get a better glimpse at their personalities. Of course the vague personality helped the fans fill the blanks with their headcanon, which is why they were almost quick to use the 'they ruined him/her' everytime the new story modes didn't fit it to their standards of the characters. Not talking about Sindel of course, that was a retcon through and through.

Well I'd say the game Raiden we have today is hardly any different the one in Mortal Kombat Mythologies which pretty much cemented his story mode character way back in 1997:

Although funnily enough how you described the creation of the characters is the very stance Larry Kasanoff (Threshold Entertainment, the company who made all the 90s MK movies, TV shows etc.) took in suing Midway for full ownership of Mortal Kombat (obviously he lost):

"The Mortal Kombat franchise, as it stands today, is far more a creation of Threshold and Kasanoff than of Midway," the suit states. "Midway's creative input was almost entirely limited to the videogames. On their own, the videogames provided only minimal back-story and mythology, and only flat, 'stock' characters with virtually no character development. ... Threshold was responsible for transforming each of the pattern or 'stock' characters present in the underlying Mortal Kombat video game from an unprotectable idea into a fully-realized, completely-delineated and independently copyrightable expression. ... Each such character represents a separate, protectable, derivative work for which the copyright is owned by Threshold."

Does this mean that maybe, perhaps... Crazy Larry actually had a point? :DOGE

Man, I hope we can get these soon. I'm getting kind of tired of them making the characters play dress up/cosplay, so this will be a breath of fresh air.

The other thing I like about this is that it almost gives the game kind of a multiverse feel to it. Kind of like when CW had that big Arrow/Flash/Supergirl etc crossover(Crisis On Infinite Earths) and they had different characters from other TV shows/movies show up.
