Well then....I learned lots today .
I was reading up a bit more on Combo Assist this weekend and how it functions. Taken directly from the descriptions in-game, it does four things:
- Opener Assist: After connecting a proper normal, you press Forward and a punch or kick and Combo Assist will perform a specific Opener Special. i.e. if I smack you with Fulgore and then hit Forward + Medium Kick, he'll launch right into Medium Blade Dash. This carries the same properties and frame data as if you would have hit quarter circle forward Medium Kick.
- Linker Assist: During the Combo sequence, if you press a kick or punch button with no directions, Combo Assist will perform the respective strength Linker or Auto-Double. i.e. as Fulgore, I've opened with Blade Dash, then press Light Punch. I'll now do the Light Punch auto double. Then I press Medium Punch, I'll now do Medium Eye Laser, etc.
Auto-Doubles are unchanged from how they're done
without Combo Assist, save that for a Heavy Punch or Kick you now use the Heavy Button as opposed to holding Medium Punch or Kick. The Linkers no longer need D-Pad inputs, but have the same properties and frame data.
You can also do Shadow Linkers by pressing two Punch or Kick buttons. i.e. You can Link with Fulgore's Shadow Blade Dash by pressing Light and Medium Kick at the same time.
- Ender Assist: Holding Forward and pressing Heavy Kick or Punch will perform a specific Ender. These are pre-selected, it will not randomly choose. I know it will not perform Fulgore's Rising Blade Ender, I think it does his fireball for punch and Blade Dash for Kick. It will never do any of the other Enders.
- Ultra Assist: Hold Forward and press all three Punches or Kicks when you're in the Combo Sequence and your opponent is in "Danger" to perform your respective Ultra Combo, or if you're at the proper stage position, Stage Ultra. i.e. You'd hit Forward + three Punches for Fulgore's Ultra, or Forward + three Kicks for his Stage Ultra. You can not perform his regular Ultra by doing the three Kicks.
In addition, and not described in-game, is that you have to hold "back" to use your character's combo trait. i.e. as Fulgore, I'd need to hold Back and press an attack to have my Auto-Doubles become Auto-Triples; Combo Assist will never do this.
Also, as mentioned before, even with Combo Assist on, you're inputs take priority and override the training wheels. For myself, I use it specifically for Linker Assists (excluding Shadow Linkers) and Ultra Assists.
An example Fulgore Combo: F+HP, D,DF,F+MK, HP, LP, D,DF,F+3K,F,D,DF+HP . This is a basic combo I do with a little help from Combo Assist. I do his spinning blade command normal into a manually done Medium Blade Dash. I then rely on Combo Assist to do a Heavy Autodouble via the Heavy button, and then again for a Light Eye Laser Linker. I then follow with a manually done Shadow Blade Dash, and then a manually done Plasma Slice Ender.
In this whole little combo, Combo Assist was only used twice, and overridden every other time by my own inputs.
Hopefully this helps you guys understand the tool even more.
