Didn't ChrisG get 2nd at APEX or something? Which was last weekend...
Apex is a Smash major. As far as the other games go it was just a glorified local. I don't see much reason to put someone like him in a top 5 because of that over consistent and recent placers like REO and 16bit.

It was an EVO qualifier though.

Yes it was, but it's not exactly a major. I'm not trying to downplay the competition there, but the tournament wasn't big and wasn't supposed to be big (as far as non-smash games go). It was about the same as Frosty Faustings. If Chris G got 2nd at something like NEC it would be a different story.

Yeah but you should consider the quality of competition not the quantity. If 200 entrants enter MK but only 5 of them are top players, getting top 5 in that isn't that impressive. Where as a tournament where there's 32 entrants and nearly everyone is either a top player or very good, getting top 5 in that is very impressive.

Yet that wasn't really the case there. Not even all the NY guys showed up. I mean, I'm trying to talk about this without putting down the players though lol. How are you suddenly top 5 in the country for placing second at a local? Chris's last grand finals was CEO in June, and he didn't even make it to his pool's losers finals at NEC. I'm not putting down Chris either, but 2nd at Apex isn't at all a top 5-worthy accomplishment, compared to what players like REO and 16bit have done.

I was illustrating my point with a hypothetical example. The point is I would take quality over quantity any day. I also never said anything at all about him being a "top 5 player". I was just pointing out the fact that he did just recently place well at a tournament with high caliber players (CD JR, REO, Sabin, KTSmith, Bluenine).

I don't get into those "whose the top 10 best tournament players" arguments. Whoever is winning and winning consistently is the person to beat. Aside from that unless the same 3 people are placing top 3 in every tournament, the argument really comes down to a popularity contest littered with bias and subjective opinions. So, it's a waste of time.

Apex was named an Evo Qualifier so late compared to the date the tourney happened, it virtually gave NO one outside that area a real chance to make it there to make it anything close to a Major. Sure, the competition at Apex because its in the NJ/NY area makes the competition that much better, but to call it anything other than a regional at best is ludicrous.
