Kombat Kast #9 -- April 22nd

But if he's a preorder incentive, it would make muuuch more sense to show him a few days before the game release.

I mean, I've preordered anyway, but it's still a baffling marketing choice to me.
I think some likely scenarios that could explain this decision are:
  1. they have already reached a favorable enough number of pre-orders for the game
  2. they think just Shao Kahn's name and character by themselves, as well as, well, the game, are enough incentive for a pre-order
  3. the Shao Kahn gameplay reveal trailer will actually drop around next week, but only his breakdown will happen on april 22nd

Shao Kahn vs Cyber Frost, let's go!

They were clearly desperate to have people interested in Shao Kahn. That's why he's in the same Kombat Kast as Frost, to draw big views.

That's my opinion , and I'm sticking to it!

I honestly can't believe that they are showing SK pre-order bonus just few hours before the game release. It doesn't make any sense.
Also the fact that we only have one Kombat Pack character revealed so far is really... weird.

It's possible their logic was the longer we went without seeing Shao Kahn, the more hyped we'd be when they finally show him off.

I canceled my pre-order because I still can't tell if I want the Standard edition or Premium. Premium is a lot more expensive than MKX+KP1. I'm not picky about the MK characters, but I do need to know how many guests there are and who the guests are, before I drop $50 on them.

I want to give NRS more money but they're making it needlessly difficult.
If youre ordering the digital, you can pre order the standard, then upgrade it if you choose for the $50 prior to release. Thats how it is on psn anyways

It is indeed strange waiting till the day before. I can think of a few reasons;

1) He's only jjst been finished (Davorah from the sounds of it was also last minute).

2) They don't want to highlight negative dlc practices with the press.

3) The quality of the character isn't quite there (hopefully not).

4) Story spoilers might be strong with him (like Frost).

5) They are considering unlike digital, millions of physical copies with his code inside will be selling for weeks after launch as shops clear through their day 1 inventory.

6) They are wanting people to buy him separately (from the sounds of it the marketing shedule is largely a WB decision).

Spoilers and not being ready I disagree with. They did the same with Goro in MKX, yet he had no story relevance whatsoever. And him not being ready is not a reason too, since he already had a model shown in the trailers and customization menu. I would agree with point 6 though most likely. WB pushes for more post release sales for more revenue.

True point 6 is the most likely. I think the character models will get iterated on constantly though. Devorahs certainly did and shes presumably in the story. It could be he wasnt at a point the devs were ready to fully show the world (his scene in the story trailer was fairly small afterall).

It's bad marketing imo any way you look at it. He's alraedy in the game and paying for him will be bad bisiness practice. More reasonable would if he were unlockable via story mode, but unlocked from the start for pre-orders. Which I think is most likely the case.

Maybe it's just a way to give casual fans a heads up that hey if you want this bad ass character so you don't have to buy him later here is your last chance.

Genius decision to show the pre-order character a day before release. i am sure that will incentivise people into pre-ordering your game lol. They should fire the genius behind this colossal fuck up. He/she clearly doesn't know anything about marketing.

Can't wait to see Frost, if she looks good gameplay wise I may drop Cetrion and go with her.
Cetrion, pfft...

Bruh. You're playing Cassie and whoever is the most rushdown. From what I've read, you aren't a zoner! So why you lyin? :p

Edit:

Shao Kahn should have been shown off WAAAAY before now, but I'm hype to see him! Also, I'm not sure when this XB stream is happening but if it's before the Kast then perhaps the Kast is Shao Kahn plus one or two DLC characters??

Also, to all the talk about pre-ordering and what, I've already paid in full for premium so... rip my wallet. haha

I can learn new tricks XD I enjoyed playing Scarlet, but doing her 212,212 combo for 3 days straight was getting really boring. In reality, I'll probably play Sonya or whoever else is in your face all the time.

Oh yeah forgot about that Xbox thing, it's this friday?

If you're interested in the game, you'll buy it anyway, regardless of the pre-order bonus.
If you're interested in the character, then you'll probably buy once it was announced.
If you're a casual, then you probably don't follow any of the Kombat Kast's or much of the promo, you'll buy it if you see the game on the shelf/online store - pre-order promo is irrelevant.

If you're in the small group that is only going to buy if their character is in and looks/plays the way they want, well the few sales that is going to lose i don't think really matters at the end of the day.

Given you can pre-order almost up to the moment it's released digitally, there's still time after the last KK anyway.

BTW, what's are your credentials in marketing?

Yeah Skarlet and Jade both started to bore me by the end of the 2 betas... add to that the crazy hyper mash strings that Jade has and that's why both are pretty much off my list of potential mains. =/

I only show up when a new game's around
That means nothing. Tanya was in MKX story mode, and she was DLC later. In fact, her DLC model was improved, and I believe she may have had different moves.

But I’m not gonna do your research for you... you’re the one who needs to do the convincing, lol. Previous NRS releases have set a precedent much different than your prediction.
One thing that bugged me on MKX was how Tanya's model was updated but the Story Mode kept the same old one. Weird...

Yeah it reminded me of Superman... f23, f23... every single player just does the same thing ad nauseam.

Also isn’t the Xbox stream tomorrow? I keep thinking the 16th for some reason.

  1. Being interested in a game doesnt mean you will buy it regardless. And it certainly doesn't mean you will buy it on release. Maybe you will buy the game a couple months after release, once the price drops. But then you will miss out on that cool pre-order character. You really need to incentivize your target audience to preorder now instead of waiting for a price drop. And one of the ways of doing that is by showing off your awesome pre-order character.
  2. I am interested in the character but why should i pre-order to get him? What can he do? How is he different from the old games? These things matter. It's not simply about the name of the character.
  3. Not true. plenty of casuals care about the Kombat Kasts and follow it (some of them are my friends). They will buy the game, beat it and then never touch it again. Thats what makes them casuals. But they will still follow the promotions of the game. And when they buy the game could be influenced by what they are seeing on these kasts.
  4. Yeah good thing you are not in charge of marketing. Few sales could be thousands if you sell millions of copies. All sales matter, if you are in the business of making money.
  5. Would you believe me, if i said i am in marketing? No? Then why ask such a irrelevant question? You don't need to be in marketing to recognize that saving your preorder character for last, isn't the smartest thing to do. If you can't see that then i dont know what to tell you.
I love Shao Kahn but they're really not doing a good job of showing off why the pre-order character is worth it.
