What's new

Didn't they say this was a roster decided by fans?

TYM's #1 L taker.
I feel like when Boon made this comment he also slipped something about DLC didn't he? Maybe after all the DLC it'll be a fan favorite roster. (Smoke pls)

I blame MK9
That roster was way too perfect
It is literally all that people want and they can't just do it again
Of course it was - it was based on the retelling of MK1-3, so the number of characters in it fits almost perfectly with the number introduced during that time. There was literally no one to drop without it affecting the story. But as someone mentioned before, the game will stagnate if they only stick with the same ones all the time.

Had it not been for the 3D games there would be no Kenshi or Quan Chi. Had MKX not happened there would be no DVorah or Kotal. But when you have a series spanning 30 years there's going to be some bad decisions made, like Kobra, Kira Dairou et al. But there's still a huge roster and without creating a game with 40+ characters each time someone will get dropped from a game now and then.

And there's still DLC to come, probably more than any other NRS game yet.

My main issue is the small roster. I'm sorry, but 25 characters in 2019 in an 11th installment for a fighting game just doesn't cut it. It should be 35, at least.

Yeah, but no other fighting game has moves customization and different variations per character. If we were talking pre-designed characters then maybe I'd agree, but even then I'll always take quality over quantity.

Man, I'm sorry: but some of you can totally eat shit.

I tried my best to be respectful and overall: do I regret the basis of my thread? For sure. I was more so feeling the insult Milenna fans did after that little low blow it felt like. I still think the roster doesn't have fan favorites people have been calling back forever, but let's disagree to that.

You want to talk some insulting harsh shit? Let's talk some insulting harsh shit then which is going to completely separate the point of my topic. Fuck that, the 25 in a 2019 game is unacceptable. I don't give a single shit about the "move customization and variations" because correct me if I'm wrong: they're not even going to be allowed in comp online. You know: the entire reason people tend to play fighting games in 2019? I like playing fighting games at a party with my friends but even for Injustice 2, we went base no variations.

That's just a bunch of bull shit. I'm genuinely sorry but expecting at least something like 30-35 isn't crazy. If it takes longer to make, it takes longer to make. But it would have been way nicer to actually have a roster size that wasn't the same exact fucking size as the one before hand. The variations are nice but there's no reason you can justify this shit besides "I LIKE MORTAL KOMBAT NRS DID GOOD FUCK YOU!".

I'm not repeating myself again. I am a fucking horror/comic nerd. I do love Mortal Kombat but I have no emotional weight with who makes it in. Up until 9 and even that was a somewhat, I didn't have any emotional weight with the characters because with the way they were wrote, why the fuck would I have? I don't even understand the love for Mileena FFS. But I still think there are a ton of popular characters that won a ton of their bull shit polls, etc that are still out of this game.

Say what you want to say. I found the roster size in 2019 a fucking joke, and if cutting variations meant we got to see a bigger variety of characters [and no, before some shill comes in and say "OH YOU WANT THE GAME THAT HAD THEM ALL BUT THEY ALL FOUGHT THE SAME] no, I just want to see an impressive cast size of newcomers, and beloved faces.

That said, I'm nitpicking with this shit. I still think the game looks amazing and fun, and I have the shit preordered to get it day one to get my stupid ass lunch tin but some of you need to chill the fuck out whenever someone has a negative opinion on the game and you go into a defensive mode as if they fucking love you or you work there. Shut the fuck up. There's better ways to reply and continue a discussion than bickering at someone and expecting any point to be made.

This so much. I don't think a lot of people realize the time and effort that goes into designing, well, anything. If NRS had infinite resources (Time, Capital, Labor, etc), then yeah, a massive roster would be nice. However, they don't have unlimited time or money or manpower. They have a budget they have to adhere to, and that means there has to be constraints.

One of those constraints is the roster size. We have to remember that every character seems to be getting north of 100 gear items, at least 3 skins (almost certainly more), unique VA, extensive 3D modeling, and custom move sets totaling around 10 specials. This is a lot for a single character. Now multiple that by 25.

That's 2500 pieces of gear, 75 skins (at least), hundreds of hours of VA, hundreds of hours of modeling, thousands of hours of QA testing, 250 special moves to animate, etc ect.

Making a Triple A video game is no small feat these days. It's a labor of love, and at the same time a soul-crushing exercise in tedium and endurance.

With all that being said, I think we're lucky as a fan base to get a 25 characters. Have you looked at Kitana?? She looks absolutely incredible, both from a game play and aesthetic perspective. Same goes for D'Vorah, and Liu Kang, and Johnny. They all look amazing, and we have NRS prioritizing their resources to thank for that.

Yes, they could have put in Mileena, but there's always an opportunity cost. If they add Mileena and take away no one, quality probably wouldn't suffer much at all. But add another "fan favorite", and another, and another...and pretty soon, all of NRS's resources have gone into pumping out subpar characters with bland designs, weak customization options, and most likely an overall rough product.

TL;DR: NRS can only put so many characters in a game without sacrificing precious resources and risking an inferior product. Some fan faves just have to sit out. :/

I couldnt agree more

My sister is trying to find a job for video game animation atm (its hard as you all know rn)

so, i do know it takes a shit ton of time to not only model, but get the characters animations down fludily

Plus with all the Gear, VA Cosmetics and stuff you have said Scyther, its incredibly time consuming, and they have restraints put on them

25 Characters is actually a very good roster

Compared to SFV release, where you only had 12

It should be 35, at least.
Here we go again in the age of entitlement. Hell, why not make it 50, as it's a nice round number.

SFV is only now reaching 35 characters after multiple "seasons" of DLC, and it didn't come with half of the shit that MK11 will at launch.

SC6 only has around 25 characters. (looking at videos, haven't played it)

It sucks to not have your favorite character in the game, I get that. But this petulant "WaSn'T ThIs FoR tHe FaNs!?!?!" shit is silly. Everybody should know by now how hard and time consuming it is to make a fighting game character, in a series with 30 years of back history there were always characters who weren't going to make it.

NRS isn't holding anyone back out of spite (expect maybe Rain :p)

Taken from GameInformer article (https://www.gameinformer.com/feature/2019/04/09/how-mortal-kombat-11-re-imagines-its-classic-characters ):

In all, the process of redesigning these characters, modeling them, and implementing them into the game fully can take a few months to a full year, depending on the character. Individual concepts for a character can take about five to six days; the full feedback loop for a character, including concepts, iterations, and whittling down ideas, can take three weeks; fleshing out the model of a character can take about eight weeks.

Sorry man I respect your opinion, but you are just sugesting that nrs could replace Johhny and sonya with the pussy new ones that were introduced in mkx?

Ok....disagree
Not replace, they don't need to be gone forever but I think they can sit out a game every now and then lol

Ermac & Smoke Main
  • There are not only Mileena, Sindel or Rain fans..
  • Ed Boon was made two pools about ' Which male/female character you want to see most in MK ' Jade, Noob Saibot, Baraka, Kabal etc. they were on those pools. Jade and Noob Saibot were the most requested ones but he gave us all..
  • Fans can't decide the roster completely, we can only make special requests for some characters. For example, Tremor was one of them in MKX, Rain in MK9.
  • If fans really want a character whose not in the NRS's main roster plan they can decide to put those characters on the roster as DLC and it is not that weird or disgusting. That is a nice touch..
  • Shao Kahn, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kano, Baraka, Kabal, Skarlet, Jade, Kitana, Erron Black, Cage Family, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Noob Saibot, Briggs Family, Kotal Kahn, D'vorah.. They are all fan favourites.. Personally i don't like Briggs family, i prefer Smoke or Ermac over them but that doesn't mean they have no fans, especially Jacqui has a lot of fans on online MKX. so they are also fan favourites too.. 22 characters are listed above, they are all fan favs.

This is my billionth life cycle.
Mileena fans (including the ones who pretend they aren't ;)) are giving Jacqui fans a run for their money for worst MK fanbase.
