Soul Calibur 6: THE SOUL STILL BURNS!

I've only ever played mkx and I2 as far as fighting games. How does SC6 compare in terms of mechanics and execution? Will it be difficult to pick up?
It's not hard to get into. It's very low barrier in that way. Execution is pretty much easy street, as far as fighters go.

I'd say it's hard to equate it in any real way to MKX or IJ2. The mechanics are quite different. MKX would probably be the closer of the two. Reasons for that being the game encourages a faster pace and there is far more pronounced guessing meta going on than in IJ2.

That aspect is more layered than the 50/50 style guessing game in MKX. Everything you do kind of has a paper, rock, scissors aspect to it, and you are constantly trying to pick the right answer for what you think your opponent is going to do while trying to keep them from figuring out what you are going to do.

It probably rewards guessing games and disrespect more than most games, and that is something that I could see turning off anyone that thinks MKX is lame for guessing games. I get the impression some people are off put by mashing or whatever, but the more I play it the less I think the game has a traditional sense of turn order. It's a lot more about finding your way through or around attacks, and using your attacks to blow up your opponent's attacks on their turn is a very valid thing.

If you don't need it to play like an NRS game to enjoy it, then it is a fun game. 3D games have a unique quality to them I personally like. If you've never played one, then find at least one to give a go. If you don't like SC6, T7 is killer IMO, and DOA6 will be out in a few months.

Where are the tier lists though? Like I know it's early but that never stopped us!
Some of the players I've been talking to seem to this is somewhat decent

Top Tier: Azwel
High Tier: Ivy, Seong Mina, Raphael, Voldo, Zas
Mid Tier: Everyone else
Mid/Low: Taki, Asta

Yeah I gotta disagree with this one.

Azwel is very good, I've said this many times, but he's not "alone at the top" good.

Zasalamel is definately better than I belived at first, but he's not at Ivy's or Seong Mina's level at all. He is a ring out machine though.

Neither Taki nor Astaroth are bad enough to be on tier of tier own. Maybe I'm bias towards Taki since she can exploit Azwel's weaknesses pretty well, but her mixups do look awsome. Astaroth is slow but he has brutal range, damage and mixups.

Last, but definately not least. Siegfried, Groh and Nightmare in mid tier? Come on!

Here's the thing about tiers. Characters play VASTLY differently in Soul Calibur, and they all operate on a different variety of strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the character you pick is going to color how you see the game. It's a total "Blind Men and the Elephant" situation. Ivy can zone, so a lot of the rushdown peeps are going to think she's broke. Seong Mina can anti-zone, so the range/stance players who use Ivy and Sieg are gonna think she's broke. Yoshi has fast mids, plus frames, and excellent tracking, so the midrange players like Mina and Astaroth are going to think he's broke.

Also, people are under-utilizing RE and GI. This game is hella oppressive, but the good and true Okubo gave us hella good defensive tools, and until we use those properly, the game is going to seem brutal. I think one reason everyone is shitting on Astaroth is because that character was balanced around his reversal edge perks, and no one is using that as a cornerstone of their Astaroth game yet.

I'm not saying "don't talk about tiers." Tier discussion is fun, but we need to put everything into perspective and realize Yoshi is broke as fuck and needs to be nerfed.

Forgot about him as well; did that list off the top of my head. I think he might be at the top of the “good but too honest to compete” list, at least until he’s explored a bit more. He’s tricky and got dirt, but he doesn’t have the stupid, easy nonsense that the top 4 or 5 possess.
Yoshi too honest? Yoshi is better than Groh at the very least. He’s busted man.

Here’s my “way too early” tier list:

A+:
Nightmare, Siegfried, Ivy, Yoshimitsu, Geralt, Groh, Voldo, Azwel, Kilik

A:
Seong Mi-Na, Xianghua, Sophitia, Cervantes, Zasalamel, Maxi

B:
Talim, Taki, Tira, Astaroth, Mitsurugi

I don’t think there’s a “bad character”. Too many options, both offensively and defensively, for every character. Personally I think the top 5 are: Siegfried, Nightmare, Ivy, Yoshi and Groh. But it’s early and everything can change.

I’ll be really interested to see how these early tier lists evolve as people start learning and punishing gaps, highs, and other openings. As Azwel, I get away with murder with 6BB, which can be sidestepped or GI’d on reaction.

If I’m reading it correctly, Siegfried is too low on his list imo. Although, I never liked that style of tier list.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting wrecked by Fried's daily so I'd like to agree with you, but PW makes Fried look pretty bad. I'll side with the SCVI Evo finalist on this one. I'd like to see PW and Linkorz go at it.

Maaaan. I grabbed the PS4 version too, but it keeps deleting any customized characters I make when I turn my PS4 off.

I mean, he's easily more reliable than I, but how comes that tournaments are filled with Nightmares and Siegfrieds if they are so bad?
I guess "bad" was a poor choice of words on my part. Somebody said it in the comments also but I think the big take away is that that majority of the cast is good. I'm curious what other veterans lists would look like. Tier lists are always a highly debated topic.

You guys are underselling Yoshi hard. Best wall carry in the game AND 50% wall damage on many stages. Plus frames with meter and hella mids. It’s damn near impossible to duck-punish his highs because he doesn’t need to use them: his mids track. People who think he’s honest haven’t grind out the matchup or haven’t played a good Yoshi.
Abso-fucking-lutely! Don't downplay my Yoshi fellas! Yoshi is the mixup King with soooo many options to mindfuck the opponent. AND dont forget, the stealing meter part of his moves. Although to keep it all the way live, I feel his attacks steal too little meter currently, those attacks are still good use. Top 5 supers in the game, with the BEST whiff punishing super that can go full screen and can kill you with pokes ALONE, without even using combos. Yoshi is a beast. Definitely one of the top players in this game.

Yoshi is a beast
-Fast pokes
-mcf is fast high crushing special mid ch stunlauncher. (JF bA combos in mid).
-Meter steal and meter burn. Mix ups, plus frames, and more dmg to combos. Nice
-3B, this is a launcher with mix ups. Every option is unsafe but its a mix up
-tech traps, if you Face Yoshi Who knows hes shit, do not tech. U will eat ton of dmg
-Wall And RO game. He has a lot of options here. AAA+B, ch mcf, 3B etc.

And there is ton load more, if I have to say few bad things, Id say that hes WR punishing. U need meter to have good dmg from hes WR. But thats it.
