Zangief General Discussion Thread

I cannot log on to the Beta so I have not been able to try anything but from what I am hearing, The counter is coming out unintentionally for a lot of people. This does not sound good.
 
A few notes and thoughts about Gief S3

Lariat = I actually thought that with the hurtboxes added onto the rest of the lariat revolutions would have been enough but I guess it was still too hard to punish, either that or it was to lessen the advantage of oki after hitting it.

Standing LK = Think this is bugged, -1 on hit -3 on block. I havent tested all the other characters. but I dont think anyone has any light attack like this. I have an instance where I got punished by mika's super afer hitting this on block not knowing about the frame data of this move. Needs to be fixed.

Parry = Got all the buffs that could have been used for any other moves I think they should either take the move out or give it more moves to counter. Its quite fast to build meter though even though its not a lot.

c.lk,c.lp,lariat = while this combo is alright on its own, it seems very inconsistent especially on the opponents wakeup where the opponent uses a move or backdashes.

My thoughts on V-Trigger 2:
This seems like it was based in part off an early sketch of a V-Skill found here:
http://game.capcom.com/cfn/sfv/column-130014.html (comboing throws on hit instead of block) and early beta modes where Zangief could combo into EX SPD. It does seem very good on paper but not at the same level in reality. Its fun to use on people who are geniuinely scared of Gief but shouldnt be really. Probably best use this for a non projectile character or some characters you feel comfortable without VT1. I still need to use this more to try and figure out stuff.

Overall I think Gief is worse (Only dropped a few spots) because of the system changes plus the individual changes.

Almost back to season 1 level of suck. I think he is almost shit, what in the FUCK was wrong with Season 2? and was just saying "Fuck yes! What the hell?!"

Just watched that vid now and it seems a lot worse than I thought. Slaynmans change suggestions were actually very reasonable and considerate instead of just reverting or calling for buffs.
I put that he slipped a couple spots because I considered him to be mid but people went bonkers claiming he was easily top 5

The funny thing was that he mentioned about letting him know if anyone was having trouble with Lariat, I have a vid against a known ragequitter this was version 2.0 though.

And oh yeah, that top 5 thing was always a joke. They were all crazy, lol. Xian still has him listed as like 12th. Yes, the character so good the man from Japan with ZANGIEF in his name... now plays Abigail.

God bro, I am so unbelievably salty about this, lol. After the beatings I've taken the past few weeks where I have just felt helpless, I'm really in a rut with my boy.

New strategy for season 3. I stopped giving a shit. I just push buttons and do whatever I want. If it works great. If not, do anything else

Zangief

  • Standing Heavy Punch (Uncharged Version)
    • Changed the timing for cancel into V-Trigger II
  • Flying Head Butt
    • Reduced the stun from 400 to 200
    • Changed the hit effect from blowback to mid-air unrecoverable damage
    • Can now be canceled
  • Muscle Explosion (V-Reversal)
    • Increased the pushback on hit
    • Increased the pushback on block
  • Tundra Storm
    • The opponent’s stun gauge will not recover during the animation lock
  • EX Borscht Dynamite (Normal/V-Trigger)
    • Added a cancel-specific action
Developer Notes: Changed hit effect of Flying Head Butt and made it cancelable. These changes allow Zangief to juggle opponents with EX Borscht Dynamite after hitting a mid-air opponent with Flying Head Butt.

So it looks like air headbutt is being changed for air to air attacks, not sure how good this would be since the hitbox for the attack is quite poor. They fixed the hp into vt2 bug but made no mention of standing lk frame data fix.

Ok after getting blown up for trying to do c.lk,c.lk,lariat on the opponents wakeup, I took it to the training room to try and break it down to see if I was just timing it wrong and to see if it is the same on different characters. The answer is to just not use it on wakeup, the lariat will whiff if the opponent backdashes. It also whiffs when it counter hits with certain normals on wakeup.
I know! Such a bummer man.

He’s next after they finish deleting Abigail from the game. They already deleted Alex too lol.
 
Awww man Vreversal changes almost messed up his ability to do l.SPD after it due to the increased pushback. You can still do it but only on deep attacks like jumping attacks and advancing attacks, this is the same for vreversal, CA combo.
 
I do have trouble keeping oppenents in the corner since most characters have long jump arcs or very wierd crossup attacks , I end up staying at just outside sweep range which makes it harder on me. I need to get more used to being closer.
Lately I have been using c.HP as a partial replacement to f.mk when going for a SPD attempt when the opponent is in the corner, its pretty good since it doesnt travel as far making certain attacks whiff but it is a high attack.
Also someone at my local said Abigail vs Gief is 4-6, he tried explaining why but I kind of zoned out after the matchup number lol. All I know is that he said he wanted to play me with him using Gief, I might make him play all the stupid matchups.

- If Cody does the full animation for his V-Skill, you can charge hp crush counter but if he cuts the animation he can block. It is an odd situation so it is just best to do non charged HP.

My favorite keep them in the corner strategy of late. Jump back jab. As stupid as that is, it seems to work better than anything else I try. I'd rather lose a bit of ground than lose the corner.

And dude, that Abigail match... Just as bad as Dhalsim or Guile. I hate it

Snakeeye is like hayatei in term of play style imo.

They stick with their character no matter how bad is the MU and they play footsie in a way that is very impressive great players.
