I’ve always been a fan of RPG’s. From super gameplay centric ones like Dark Souls, to more story oriented like Skyrim. I also love turn based RPG’s, which there’s really not many new turn based RPG’s anymore. One of the more fun aspects to me is the immersion factor. Really getting into the idea of a “Role Playing Game” and immersing yourself into the world and story of the game. Games like Dark Souls while can be immersive, I don’t play those types of action RPG’s for that factor at all.

It’s rare for an RPG to have a great story, great gameplay, great characters, great character development, great immersion and a lot of depth. Games like Dragon Age: Origins and Inquisition have come close, but honestly I’ve never played a game that not only had all of the aspects that make an RPG really fun, but also been strong in all of those areas.

Also a random side note, I never realized how important graphics, frame rate, animation, etc were until recently. As a “hardcore” gamer, I’ve always had the mindset of ‘gameplay over graphics’. I still do have this mindset, but graphics are insanely important especially in RPG’s and especially in RPG’s that require an immersion factor. For instance, Dragon Age Origins is an overall better game than Inquisition, but it’s nearly unplayable trying to go back and play it after playing inquisition for so long. It’s crazy how much graphics have changed just from last gen to current gen.

Anyslut, I was wondering which RPG’s y’all consider your favorite? Or ones you think cover all the “RPG aspects” I listed above. I have been on an RPG kick lately, just started The Witcher 3 and it seems promising. But literally just started it, it seems to be starting off a bit slow so we will see if I get bored or not.

Some of my favorite RPG’s of all time are: Dark Souls series, Skyrim, Dragon Age Origins and Inquisition, Jade Cocoon 2, Enchanted Arms, Pokemon series, Fable series, Fallout 4, Paper Mario, Horizon Zero Dawn, and probably many more I’m forgetting.

Never played: Fallout games before 4, Kingdom Heart series, Final Fantasy series, and more.

As I was reading post I was thinking yeah this is an old thread that is only popping up in recent because someone just added new reply. Seemed impossible that someone could say they loved turned based Rpg and not mention divinity original sin.. Figured this was written before it released... But nope 30 minutes ago.
Dude stop everything and pick up divinity original sin. And if you game on pc also get part 2 (hopefully it will come to consoles soon) I just spent 220 hours on first play through and that was no where near 100%

Fallout: New Vegas for me, which is also my favorite game in general. Runescape (old school) is also a lot of fun for me, it reminds me of when I used to play it over a decade ago and I still play it often.
The witcher 3 is a phenomenal game too imo, amazing story, gameplay, graphics, and characters.

I'm also an RPG-lover, mainly because of the way they allow you to influence the story/world. Some of my favorites are:

- Witcher 3, which is a standard pick at this point. Choices feel meaningful and Geralt is a great protagonist in this game.

- Skyrim/Fallout 4, because the freedom that these games give you in the world is unparralelled. For me, Skyrim has the advantage in terms of role-playing while Fallout 4 has the advantage in gameplay and an interesting main story.

- Bioware RPGs (Mass Effect, Dragon Age), because they're very squad-focused games with the squads themselves being interesting and fun to be around. Only issue for me was that I didn't like Dragon Age Origins and Inquisition combat at all, with the latter feeling strangely broken at times (in the sense of not functioning).

- Persona series, because while anime games are totally not my thing, the Persona games threw away my bad assumptions of JRPGs being trope-y and characters being one-note. The characters are all likeable and the high school aspect works well because it gives you time to hang out with people in the world.

- Souls games, for the relatively simple but hard to master combat. You feel like you're legitimately getting better and it makes beating a hard area feel rewarding in a way that no other RPGs are. See the games as challenging rather than being hard for the sake of it, the difficulty has a purpose. The story is also brought to you indirectly (item descriptions and connecting the dots yourself).

cRPGs was always my favourite genre and probably a thing that turned me into a gamer. I started with Betrayal at Krondor playing with my friend on his PC back in the late 90-s. I loved how huge and complex this game was compared to other titles I played before. Then I heard there is even bigger and better game. It was Baldur's Gate. To this day it's one of my beloved game and its sequel is my favourite game of all time.

My personal ranking would look like this

1. Baldur's Gate saga
2. Planecape Torment
3. Fallout 1 & 2
4. Witcher 3
5. KOTOR 1 & 2
6. Gothic 1 & 2
7. Fallout: New Vegas
8. TES: Morrowind
9. Neverwinter Nights 2 (mostly because its expansion: Mask of the Betrayer was just amazing)
10. Persona 5

I don't really put Souls, Bloodborne and Nioh on the same shelf. I love those titles, but they are sperate genre in my opinion. For me cRPGs are about story telling, narration and ... role playing :)

From newer games I really liked Divinity: Original Sin 1&2. I maybe liked it even better than first game from this developer Divine Divinity which was a great game back in the early 2000-s. Another game that deserves attention is Tyranny released last year, I believe. For me it was way better than Pillars of Eternity from the same developers.

RPGs are one of the few games I care about outside of fighters. The Witcher 3 is a phenomenal game. You'll enjoy, just take your time and get immersive in the beautiful world.

My personal Favorite RPGs this generation is Bloodborne, the music, weapons, atmosphere, combat and music are just what I enjoyed the whole cosmic horror, Victorian era first half is sick.

Dark Souls 3 was good, but I ended up playing far less than 1 and 2.

If you like party management RPGs with isometriccal elements, check out Pillars of Eternity. Great writing, and it's made by Obsidian, so you will definitely get the Baldur's Gate vibe from the gem.

These shits get me turnt up every time I play them, especially final fantasy x. That game made me cry the manliest tears you will ever see, even till this day and damn Lulu is a bad B...

I don't think RPG games as a genre should be discussed and compared to games of other genres just because they have RPG elements implemented in them. RPG games and action/adventure RPG, JRPG, MMORPG are completely different things and should not be discussed as one genre.

Of course everyone's favorites are witcher 3 and zelda BoTW but those are not to be compared with games where the player creates the main protagonist to his/her liking and their decisions alter the path of the game like Darksouls and Skyrim.

Yeah I'd have to be more specific. RPG gets slapped on everything now. Especially some ARPGs which are more A than RPG, imo.

That said, I'd give it to the Fire Emblem games (Radiant Dawn being my favorite) and Final Fantasy 10.

I played all the other God of wars. I just added it to the list due to the fact that the new ones going to be more of an RPG and the fact that I loved the series. I'm sure I'm going to love the newest game. They've never disappointed.

If it's that big of a deal to you I will remove it lol

Dragon’s Dogma was a really good RPG during release. Was hooked for a few weeks and of course Skyrim and ESO.

The Pokemon series of main games of course, from Green/Blue and Red all the way to Ultra Sun and Moon. It's not only my all time favorite RPG franchise, but one of all time franchises in general. The vast and colorful universe full of Pokemon you can catch, and then the team you build and the choice you make, plus all of the little things in between. No doubt an amazing series.

I also liked Diablo 2, played only that in the series but it was very fun.

I agree but I don’t know all the names and differences. Like what is a “cRPG”?

Actually your post wasn't confusing for me, you were mostly focused on discussing plain RPG games like Darksouls, skyrim. I was about to post darksouls series as my top favorite RPG games and enlist all the reasons why i think it's vastly superior, but then i saw ppl posting "witcher 3" here which is also my favorite game from a different genre.

So i tried to filter the discussion to be more accurate and match the thread title, but ppl can't be bothered and would rather discuss based on a more general notion of the genre than mine.
