Crossups

I hate them with a passion. I wish fighting games never included them.

Can someone explain how you're meant to deal with them. They are completely over the top in this game.

You have to bloc the other direction. You normally hold back to block an attack coming at you. In order to block a crossup, you have to hold forward.

It also depends what kind of move is crossing up. If its a jump attack, the above applies. If it is a mid attack, just hold down and you won't have to guess between crossup and non-crossup.

Hope this helps

Take the jump ins/ cross ups that you are having the most problem with into practice mode and try to get a feel for at what distance it crosses up and at what distance it doesn't. Be very wary in the corner, where the number of things that cross up go up a ton. Punish poorly spaced jump ins/ cross ups by trip guarding.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell which side an attack is going to hit, but for the most part you just need to pay attention and block the correct direction.

Crossups are just like overhead/low mixups, only left-to-right instead of high-to-low.

I'm having a hard time doing THOSE crossups, so I'm not using them much. They're so wonky, that makes them hard to land, while going on the other side.

There's cross-ups, then there's ambiguous cross-ups. An ambiguous cross-up is basically a cross-up that is inherently a 50/50. In which it's practically impossible to tell which side your opponent will land on and consequently which side to block. Unfortunately there's several of these in this game.

^^ You see that? That is NOT a cross-up. The fact that you're expected to correctly block that is a bit ridiculous. That should absolutely be a cross-up but it isn't, aka you simply have to guess, which is kinda insane.

For example supergirls f3, can she choose to land on either side? Other than that then isn't it always easy to know how to block hers?

The cross-ups and ambiguous cross-ups in this game are disgusting, especially if you're Batman. -_-

There it is...
Batman and the Joker seem to be the worst.
Jokers crossups in this game are really not as good as a lot of the cast.

I find the whole idea of them stupid. People got salty about mkx mixups but i think crossups are clunkier and more mindless

This is one of the reasons why block button is the better design imo. Crossups in this game are just dumb. It's not like a real 50/50 where you have to condition people when even the player doing the cross up doesn't know where it's gonna hit. It's a true coin flip.

And they said MKX was all about "coin flip 50/50".

It's not a coin flip when at least other player knows what he's doing. Now it's both just guessing what's gonna happen lmao
There are definitely examples of cross ups surprising even the attacking player, for sure, won't argue that. However, those are generally more rare than intentional cross ups.

Even with green lantern, one of the most cross up heavy characters, I intentionally cross up or not. Like with the b13xxtraitxxLM setup. I use f2 to put myself in that f3 ambiguous range, but based on a slight step forward and even the timing of when to press f3, I decide whether to cross up or not and believe me, it's very conditioning heavy.

Doesn't change the crux of your point though, that there are many examples of a player crossing up that didn't intend to, or a player trying to cross up and not, yet still converting. Luckily though most characters have directional inputs for strings and launchers though so it's very easy to drop combos after a surprise cross up/same side attack. Except for batman...that's just bullshit lol

Get over here!
The thing that is the worst about crossups is the random factor with some of them. In a game like MKX where crossups are not a thing (due to block button) even when a character has a 50/50 using overhead or low that the defender has to guess on, the attacker still made a conscious choice to go overhead or low (and the defender made a read/guess based on what he thought the opponent would do based on their tendencies).

With crossups, half the time the attacker puts you in a crossup setup THEY done even know which side it is going to hit on. To me it is like a 50/50 but without having to make a choice as the attacker to commit to one option, it is just like a "well lets put him in this setup and we shall see which side the game decided to have this attack hit on". As the defender you are more making a read or guess on how the game decides to register the hit instead of on the decision your opponent made. Fighting games are supposed to be about reading your opponent but when your opponent didn't even know for sure what side their attack would hit on it just takes away from that IMO.

But with a back to block game crossups will always be a thing so it is what it is.

Edit: Just to be clear, I have much less of a problem with intentional (non ambiguous) crossups as these are essentially no different than an OH/Low mixup in a block button game. The ones I hate are the ambiguous ones where the attacker doesnt even know which side it will hit on. I realize these are more uncommon but that is the type I was referring to specifically.

Concerning Batman's cross up. In injustice I was able to break down the point in which he crosses up, it has been a while so I am still getting bodied by it right now. But I am pretty sure it is a similar J2, lab it and you will start to see the hit box on it.
