Question How do you think buffs/nerfs are decided?

Cut off a chickens head and throw the body on a game show style table with random buffs/nerfs listed on it in a pizza shape, watch the body flail around while someone in the background plays yakety sax on a kazoo. When the body finally collapses apply whatever buff/nerf it landed on to a random character which is decided by rolling a 26 sided die while blindfolded, repeat.

At least that's how I assume nrs does it.

God Confirm

We're all from Earthrealm. If not, cool pic brah.
Why did Scorpion get a special cancellable d4? Not one other character has this luxury. I'm not saying every character should have this, but why give it to a character at all? What was it about the game at that time that made someone go, "Scorpion should be able to special cancel his d4"?
Do you mean Ninjutsu's B4? Are you referring to B4's? Pretty sure every character has a cancellable D4...

laff I definitely meant b4. I've been exposed as incompetent. @.@

I fixed it. Thanks. I go over my posts like eleventy-billion times to make sure there are no errors and look what I did. >.> Thanks again for pointing it out. xD

Its always gonna be hard to balance NRS games when you got character loyalists constantly talking about how shit or fair their character is. You go and tell most japanese chun li players that their character is probably the best in the game, they will agree and tell you thats the reason why they are playing her, you do the same in the NRS scene and the guy literally wants to murder you.

You've officially been exposed and you now have lost all credibility, you don't know anything about this game, and you're a skrubby-dub-dubby

Terrible times breed terrible things, my lord.
I think nrs has answered this already.

They said it themselves. They listen.
They watch and listen here on tym.
I guess reddit too (which is really chill)
Twitter.
YouTube and on and on.

They listen to the pros and Joe's.
Then they do one of the things your not supposed to do as a business model. You aim to please everyone.
Instead of actually sitting down and going back to square one and fixing the game.

Even though that's never enough. They have other projects on the go. Time restrictions. Maybe issuses develop when actually solving a problem on a character like if a moves property behaves or acts unintended has it should there's been lots of examples of that in this game.

I'm more interested in HOW they learn from having these mistakes in the first place.

Betas like sfv. Or to go even further like what Namco did overseas and released a game in the arcades first and I guess run it through there. Then having rigorously tested it and proper patches to the game to thus put it on console and pc without most to the issues. It doesn't have to be arcades here but a pay to play access to put your stamp, input, ideas and issues forward before they read it here. Or having thousands of tweets about buff this and ya gotta nurff that. Shut up.

Having people. Not only pros but just random ass people test the game to see it works as intended by the developers and the theory of the game. Has much as so many give them credit many have quit the game altogether or stopped playing. Input from everybody would solve this.

Game codes. Release it where I'd you buy a WB game you have a chance to play and input your thoughts and ideas on the game. This should be a model for every developer out there.

All these things and more would've been great ways to avoid unnecessary buffs n patches and curb as well as fix game play issuses instead of the continued mk9, Injustice, mkx-xl-xxl type of patches again we had to go through.

Just my nickel n dime.

Resolution through knowledge and resolve.
They get character and variation win percentage data from their online servers and analyze any anomalies where a character variation is constantly winning or losing. They read these forums and try to decipher what is real and what is imagined or rolling/up-playing/downplaying. They watch the tournaments and try to see what is what in high level matches. Then, they have their high to mid level team of players test the data and they discuss solutions as a team that are approved or denied by three key team members. Its fairly easy to guess the three. Also, there is a fourth that moderates the team discussions and decides which solutions get put up for approval and which do not get presented to the three. Having the ear of the fourth is how some members of the NRS FGC have had influence, but if their ideas present a problem (because influential players sometimes use their knowledge to carefully down or up-play) - they quickly lose that outlet.

Someone hit the nail on the head when they said NRS doesn't want to do the changes suggested here on tym, I won't ascribe any motivations for that, but the trend is certainly there.

Beta testing the changes would be huge, but any communication from NRS would be big. I don't mean "hey here's what we decided so good luck" I mean an actual back and forth on improving their game in a competitive format. Lurking on forums and twitter doesn't get you real answers from most people. I get that MK is for casuals too (which is awesome) but the fumbling in the dark aspect is rough to deal with. I'm particularly excited for inj2 though because Gear mode vs Tourney mode should allow for the two metas to coexist separately and benefit all.

It seems like NRs intentionally avoids making changes suggested in this forum I have no idea why...

Damn vro, hadda mess with yo auntie
I don't think NRS should listen to people on here to make changes. People have opinions and motivations and shit for what they do and you get upplaying and downplaying as a result of said opinions and motivations.

What they need to do though is get a better balancing team since most of the time, these changes just send people up down every fucking where. Maybe hire some well known people in the FGC but have them not be a part of the NRS community so character bias isn't as big an issue. I say this cause, would you really trust a hardcore Mileena main that frequents TYM and complains that she's not good enough to balance MKX? If you're answer is yes you would, I would suggest seeking help immediately

Devil's abbacus here chuck. Tanya, Scorpion, Kano, Kabal, Bane, Sub Zero, Shinnok, Jacqui, The other Scorpion, Tanya again, CSZ, Quan Chi (in both games), Kabal, Jax, Cyrax Cyrax fucking Cyrax. These are all characters that just happened to be tanked or buffed shortly after they became a "discussion topic" here. You think Deathstroke lost 5 frames off low guns because the average member of the MKO has that kind of reaction speed online?

Two things;
a) who does this dialogue start with. You want them to hold a beta for a game that has a million+ casual players and distill it all into a patch that the most competitive will approve? Isn't that what we already do by playing online each and every day? Or are we going to appoint community leaders and tell NRS listen, these 5 guys know what we all want? That hasn't worked for any game ever. Not lol. Not wow. Not even golf.

b) Capcom held a year long beta for SF5. There were crying voices day one. How do you account for that? Is the only way to make a functional fighting game to Skullgirls it and put out a build ever couple hours like Mike Z? Cause even the SG community has had their ups and downs with the overall state of the game. Mike Z gets in front of a camera every week to tell people how and why he does what he does, and that game is FAR from perfect. I personally checked out during the second Double debacle, I think now they're on to bitching about Fukua and Robo Fortune. Two DLC characters that changed everything forever, sound familiar?
