Question What makes MK9 stand out?

Fool, I agree with you. Down players picked up a character like Shang Tsung, placed high, and have still insisted he is low tier to this day.

Shang Tsung was #10 in the game, IMO. The character was definitely high tier and one of the better characters the game had to offer.
While I agree that shang is #10, honestly all the tier placements after Kabal and Kenshi are very debatable

You're right. Kano, Smoke, Johnny Cage, Jacqui, and some others who I have placed in my S tier are definitely at all these off-line majors placing top eight every where. *sarcasm*
You just had to fill space because the top guys only use a few characters lol. Characters like Cage and Kano are bitched about by a ton of people, so it's an easy and safe choice. Jacqui is the only character ranked high on that list might be controversial. For the most part all characters ranked high are either placing or are disliked by the community. Funny coincidence.

How did this conversation turn into fighting about tiers in a game that died 4 years ago?

Oh right, it's TYM :p

Anyway, MK9 was so engaging to me not only because of how much more free-flowing and deep the neutral felt, but because of how free-form the combos could be. Sometimes you had to think quick if you wanted to convert good damage off of an unexpected situation.

Scorpion's vortex, if even deserving of the name, is awfully unsafe on block in Mortal Kombat 9 because the Scorpion player has to commit to spear or EX teleport, both of which are highly punishable on block.
I suggest you look up what a vortex is because the vortex discovered by Slips actually fits the definition of one in the traditional sense.

Pre-patch Cyrax did not have a vortex. What he did have was a command throw whose escape window was only two frames. The command throw resulted in a guaranteed bomb set up. This sequence was considered a semi-infinite combo by many players at that time because you could loop the set up until the command throw was miraculously escaped.
At the risk of you just neglecting to look up the definition lets look at exactly what a vortex is:

"A situation where one player is continually able to force their opponent to make an unfavorable guess out of a combo or setup, resulting in the opponent getting caught in the same setup all over again."

Now technically with high enough execution you could get out of Cyrax's setup, just as you could with Summoner Quan Chi's. With Summoner it involves/involved precisely timed low then overhead. It wasn't technically a guess but the timing was so difficult that it was considered as such. If the term can be applied to Summoner Quan Chi's setup then it can be applied to Cyrax's because a vortex by definition doesn't need to involve an overhead/low mixup. It involves a guess and the guess for Cyrax was that tech window.

I will be honest. There was once a time that I played Mortal Kombat 9 for a living, yet I am neither sure what Baraka's vortex was nor why it is relevant. The character has never been anything higher than low tier. Therefore, the vortex, whatever it is, is not part of Mortal Kombat 9's meta game.
You should look up GGA Max. He played pretty well in tournaments.

The next time you want to sound smart and call out players who played the game religiously, at least support your argument with relevant examples.
The next time you say absolutes like "there are no vortexes" make sure it's true. You didn't say "there are no vortexes from the top tier cast." Learn from this and reread what you type up to post, think about it with a level head, and remove your typical hyperbole from it before submission because it ALWAYS comes back to make you look stupid.

He was just saying it sucked. Scorpions vortex was a 50/50 and if he guessed wrong he died. Scorpion had the most terrible character design I've ever seen.

There is a theorem that says people are happier when they have fewer choices. I don't know where the article is, might have been by Curiosity. In any case when I read it I immediately thought of MK9.
Dude, you live?

I don't want to hijack this thread and plug in the mod we made, but.
People, you keep calling MK9 is dead, and that there's no interest in a revival. Wouldn't the Trilogy Edition patch work towards reviving the game? granted, it's still a WIP.

No because the right people aren't chosen to set the balance

What exact point are you trying to argue

I definitely agree with what pig said. I took a look at what you changed and I can tell you didn't consult with the top players of each character like you should of had. You're making uninformed changes and too many of them. Just looking at my main character for example cage, what are your justifications for those changes? It's as if you just changed his frame data just to do it. There was no reason to change anything about him really. Your patch could be good but you should definitely ask the top players of mk9 what should be changed first. Most people are going to find things they really don't like about your alterations.

MK9 plays like MK3. They gave us what we wanted.

OH, and MKX's run mechanic is shit. Whoever decided that instead of pressing 1 button to run, that we should press three buttons instead (Fwd,Fwd+Block), needs to be fired at NRS immediately. Seriously, who came up with that garbage @tylerlansdown ?
Not like running in this game is hard or anything but remember, you need that stance switch button :DOGE

Are ya' ready for MK11 kids?!
Implying this horribly under explored character was bad or "low tier" is funny
I'm not sure how much you played MK9 but Baraka was never any better than like, bottom 6.

I mean, maybe you might've caught a few people off with his sporadic double digit plus frames, but the second anyone informed enough took the time to research that the startup of his normals resembled moon gravity, it was almost always curtains.

He literally has REO being involved on the rebalancing. I think he consulted way more players but no one really helped. And a rebalance isn't a case of just leaving characters the same just because they operate fine under the current state of the game. Cage would simply be boosted by the high tiers getting nerfed, and still retain a lot of his dumb aspects. Also, remember, the changes possible are limited due to how poorly coded the game is. Sonya can't even get the desired changes because EX cartwheel is given the same code as regular.
