General/Other - Smoke Inconsistency of Smoke Bomb

I've never had B3-Smoke Bomb not connect. B3 connects at the start of round positioning, which is pretty friggin' good for a low, meterless starter into possible vortex.
If you're trying to use B3 as a starter out of that range, honestly, it's just pushing your luck. And any slight movement in the opponent or collision with B3 that still lets B3 win the trade, yeah I'd expect Smoke Bomb to be wonky there.

B1-Smoke Bomb (regular) doesn't connect midscreen except off a meaty. Okay.
IT'S SAFE.
Would you rather it be "adjusted" to connect and be full combo punishable? Cyber Sub and Cyrax can connext their Net/Freeze off B1. UNSAFE.
If you're worried about the opponent always blocking low midscreen when you're meterless, B1-Spear. I bet you'll have some success. That's also uninterruptable by armor. And as unsafe as Sub/Cyrax's B1-special, meterless. So Smoke is in the club.

I know you can position the Smoke Bomb, like Tremor's Rocks, but I've honestly never had to do that with Smoke in the week+ I've been learning him.
And running over/through some projectiles? C'mon, that's been in the game.
I would honestly pick consistency over safe. I would rather know the outcome is combo or I get punished than not know what the fuck will happen.

On a side note I do actually use b1 harpoon quite a lot. Works well in the vortex.

Some combos in fighting games dont work if the first hit isnt spaced right, it makes perfect sense that a projectile that starts a combo wont always combo off everything in every situation ever when you factor in travel time. In order for it to work at all times you either would have to increase the hit advantage of the moves you cancel out of or increase the travel speed of smoke ball, those are buffs not fixes, and Smoke does not need buffs lol

So that justifies it being inconsistent? They are 2 completely different things. Whether it should be safe or plus has nothing to do with it's inconsistently comboing.

I'm not saying it's okay that smoke cloud is inconsistent, I'm just trying to stop the downplaying. None of the other 3 variations have a safe special like smoke cloud. Each of them either has to swing for the fences with net, teleport punch and ice ball. If they want safety, they burn a bar. Smoke gets that safety for free.

While I take your point can you name another example specifically in Mortal Kombat XL where this applies? I don't feel it's fair in a game where no other character has this problem.

It wouldn't be an MK game without Smoke downplay.
I'm personally not downplaying. I like playing Smoke; I think he has a lot of tools and I think he's fun to play. I just want consistency, even if that means it becomes unsafe (Though I don't personally think it should for reasons I won't go into here as that's for a different thread, but I'd take that trade).

But they all have better damage, cyrax and Sub in particular. Sektor has a really good armour move and Cyrax and Sub have hard to blockables.

I personally would not trade smoke bomb consistantly if it meant being unsafe , if you hit the opponent and your not sure if you hit them right then use spear. It works great , I use run f21spear every time I win a air to air trade

B1 smoke ball combos midscreen sometimes. He's a very glitchy character honestly. I don't know if it's my controller or what, but online I'll randomly get invisibility going for F1 3 smoke ball. It never happens when I play sets offline. Outside of smoke ball I've encountered some funky glitches with him:



All of these are present in the4 current 10-4 patch.

Normally when you do a neutral jump punch or jump period in the corner, the camera will follow you up, but for whatever reason when fighting goro sometimes it doesn't follow you. Try doing the combo i did in training and you'll notice the camera will follow him. When fighting Goro (online, never tested offline) the camera stays fixed on the ground.

I always thought that was just a big body character thing. I think f/t is the same way
