The official Euro Kombat thread

Hi everyone. This is the official improve Euro Kombat thread. If you have no idea what EK is just check the second post.

So the main issues, as I see them, are:

* Lag:
- EK takes place in private KOTH's to allow for sreaming while people play. This has been known to cause lag but I'm not sure how to go around this issue.

* Stream:
- The stream looks bad and randomly dies because streaming from ps4 does that -_-. I might invest in real streaming equipment but I can't afford an Elgato or something similar for quite some time. Kickstarter?

* Information:
- It seems that it's rather hard to get everyone to find the info needed in time (thus causing misunderstandings and missed matches). First of all I'm going to restrict all info to TYM. Before I've taken participants from my FL on PSN but having two sources of people signing up is too much.

- Second I think there is a feature to sign yourself up on challonge. That would spare me a lot of time.

- People dropping out/last minute replacements. Getting the info to those last minute players is crucial but hard since sometimes I don't even have their PSN ID.

* Format:
- I feel this can be improved. more players? Less matches? Ranking system?

* Prizes/fee
- This is not as important and I feel that EK should be free. However a small entry fee would give a pot (increasing the "tournament-feel") and perhaps deter people from dropping out in the last second/not showing up.

Please help me improve this awesome tournament.

What is Euro Kombat?

* A new monthly PS4 Europe online tournament.

* No entry fee, no prizes (unless someone donates another Gold Scorp).

* It is hosted and commented by yours truly.

Rules:
* Ethernet Cable or GTFO

* Matches are 2/3. Semis and Finals 3/5

* Winner is character locked AND variation locked. If you lose you can of course switch characters and variation.

* If you disconnect you lose the match, but will not be disqualified. Meaning if you disconnect the first match/have a win you can still run it back.

* If you don't show up you have about 10 minutes before you're disqualified (unless you can msg me with a good reason to push your match for a bit).

* If two players can't connect at all we can try switching some players around BUT it is not a guarantee and can still cause issues if it's later on in the tournament.
* When it's your turn to play I will invite you to a private KotH where I will be afk and stream/record and the two contestants can go ham.

Notes:
* All matches will be streamed on twitch (www.twitch.tv/msmiharo) and uploaded to YouTube (www.youtube.com/themsmiharo).

* A ranking system is not in place at the moment.

* If you want to/don't want to be tagged in future tournament posts please say so and I will add you to/remove you from my list.

Hey Miharo, here is what I think about these issues:

Lag : Not much can be done, from my experience it doesn't change too much between KOTH and private 1vs1 games...lag will be a problem anyway. If NRS doesn't fix the netcode there isn't a single thing we can do :/

Stream : Kickstarter is certainly a good idea, how much is needed to buy some decent streaming equipment? I might donate a little, and I'm sure others would do the same. Euro Kombat is great ;)

Information : Restricting the registrations to TYM is fine, but is probably better to write a little guide about how to sign up on challonge. Some people will have problems doing that since not everybody knows how it works.
Last minute replacements could be done creating a "replacement list" on tym, composed of players who wanted to play but didn't find a spot in time. It should work.

Format: How about 32 players double elimination? It might work if you stream only some matches

Prizes/Fee : I don't think an entry fee is really necessary, but the tournament can still have some prizes if the one who can donate something. I gave a Gold Scorpion skin to the winner of the last tournament... even something this small adds a little of tournament feel imho.
That said, I think you are doing a great job and with a little entry fee like 5€ (4€ for the prize pot, 1€ for you) we could add cool prizes and you would also get a well deserved remuneration.

I think an elgato is about 1600 SEK =~160 €. I could of course pay about 50% of that but definitely not all. It's just not possible.

I think people signing themselves up will save me A LOT of work which would be great. I've had backup lists but no "official" one.

32 players could work but tbh I'm not sure we can get as many considering drop out rate. Having half the players move on because of walk over feels lame. I could still stream top 16. More than that is just not possible. Yesterday's tournament had a few cancelled matches (4 or so) and the tournament took around 4-5 hrs iirc.

I think an entry fee might be something to think about at least for SOME tournaments (like every 3rd or so). I kinda like the idea of prizes/prize pool but I also want EK to be about levelling up the EU scene as well as busking a community and I feel that is easier if everyone can join.

A small fee of 5-10€ could work and would reward placing. For instance a fee of 5€ would give a pot of 80€. Winner takes 40, second 25, third 15. Or if I'd take a share (for future stream investments) something like 35/15/10.

Yeah not sure if a kickstarted would really grant that much in such a short time though

* Lag: i had no lag on my matches

* Stream: maybe you can go get some kickstarter going. Is great idea man. If not just go on and stream with ps4 or maybe get someone who can stream more professional than you (maybe a co-caster who streams too)

* Information:
Just keep things in tym as you said. It´s better for you and everyone has just to look @ tym to get the information they need.

Good idea with the self registration

* Format: Well i was a little bit mad , because i nearly had to wait around 1 1/2 hours for my first match and another hour for my second one. (Idk if im just impatient, i got bored and just watched the stream almost falling asleep :D)

Maybe you could go and just stream top4 + top 2 loserbracket. Also if you go for more players streaming every game will be no option anyways. I think that i more players enter the tournament, there may be even more people who drop out before the tournament starts

* Prizes/fee:
I think prizes are gr8 for the competition, but also there will be less people competiting when there is a fee. I don´t know what´s the best way ^^

I fucked up the order of the games a bit so the losers of the first round had to wait too long (did round one > winners. Instead of round 1 > losers > winners).

I kind of want to stream as much as possible. I think it's the best way to improve the scene in general. More people can watch you play and critique your gameplay. Also I really want to keep it on one stream and not several.

I'll look in to a kickstarter

Yea also viewers can follow the whole tournament, when you stream every match :).

I still had a lot of fun! Watched the finals with my smartphone in my bed haha :p.

Stream important matches. I'm sure we can all discuss how we define 'important'. That way players would be able to do the sets nice and quickly, bullshit free. Another issue which bothered me quite a bit and other players is the terrible connection some players had (I won't mention names) I'm sorry but there needs to be a standard of connection. Surely we can establish one which everyone can meet so we can all have decent games.

Aside from lag and all. The stream quality. Have you considered running the stream via OBS? It gives the stream a lot more professionalism. Since it's a monthly tournament surely we could also set up some kind of promotion for the tournament?

Just my two cents...

Lag: Nothing you can really do about that. I didn't really experience anything odd during my matches, so my conclusion can only be that those experiencing lag are to blame, not you or the way this is set up.

Info: Post all info here on tym, but invite people to a skype group (one for people who are in and another for people on the backup list). Most people can download skype to their phone, so it will be easier to get in touch with the guys on the backup list.

Streaming: I agree that there is a long wait between fights. Having two streams would be a good solution to this. People can skip around to different fights and you can have more people in the tournament. I'd be willing to stream to a channel of yours. The only thing is that you'd have to have more people to commentate or have one person per channel commentating. You could set it up in a way that the most 'important' matches are on stream one and the others on stream two. Of course all can be recorded and uploaded to youtube afterwards.

I don't agree with streaming just some games. My idea with Euro Kombat is developing and strengthening the EU scene and letting everyone be shown on stream. Reducing the stream to just finals will only allow the best of the best to be shown and receive critique on their gameplay.

Organising two streams is too much of a hassle tbh. I don't think you all realise how much work this actually is lol. Commentating with taco was a blast though, I'd definitely do that again.

Not sure how to run it via obs. I've used it when steaming from pc but not ps4. How would one go about that? Also I might upgrade my internet but tbh that shouldn't be the problem.

Not sure how to single out bad connections. Like some people I just can't play because of lag but they play fine with others. If courage people who know they have internet issues to not participate however

Most humble shit talker ever!!!
From the lag side all of matches where clean

The Tanya match had a little delay but it was consistent and playable

Streaming through OBS requires a capture card. You can look up tutorials and develop a basic understanding, once your done with that some of us (like myself) can provide the resources you probably would need to up the streaming quality and style. The only financial investment you would really have to make here is purchasing a suitable capture device. An example of a basic set up would be hooking up your laptop/pc to your capture device. Next you would have to set up and develop the necessary presets, intros, transitions etc ready for the stream on OBS. I'm sure you're a busy guy so I think it would be wise to let a few other people to help out.
