Searching for a Mentor / Teacher.

My performance is weak and I want to prove a point. My fundamentals are below average and I'd like to become tournament ready. I want to change fighting games, give them more recognition, and I want to win. But I'm the type of person that can't learn by myself. I have to be guided because I don't know if I'm doing what's right. I dont have any money (no credit card or anything to transfer), but Im looking for a teacher that's willing to take me step by step to get to the top. I play on the PS4. I do not have transportation to locals ( or I'd be there already). I know online lacks netcode and other stuff but it's all I have to work with. I'd like to participate in big tournaments and make top 8. I guess it would be pointless to ask pros because they are busy with their own training, but will someone take that time and help me? I'd be very grateful.

Ask M2Dave, he can teach you in hours EVERYTHING you need to know about a character. He also made top 8 that one time.

I didn't limit the amount of teachers, so I can learn from you guys all at once. Each teacher teaches a different way, maybe one of you guys will make me click. Thanks for the replies, means alot.

Edit: I want to play rushdown. I'm looking at sonya right now.
i know dude i was just joking around, the more teachers the better since you get to learn about many different playstyles, it is good to have a bit of everything, i will teach you about zoning, trust me it is good to know that way you know how to get around it

I've been super rushdown myself as of late so I can definitely help on that front.

It doesnt really matter who teaches you as long as they posses the ability themselves to teach/understand proper fundamentals like footsies, blocking, anti-airing and optimal punishes. From there, trying out a lot of characters to find out which one you mesh with is important. "Trying out" doesn't mean you need to spend weeks on the character; ie: I can't get into a groove with the way Takeda moves so I didn't main him or feel it necessary to devote a lot of time to him when I clicked with Kano. Don't let someone tell you "You must play soni-... erron black" or anything else that narrows the scope of the game. The only real exception I can think of is if someone was trying to teach the game through a "vanilla" fighter like teaching someone the basics of Street Fighter through Ryu. Try not to have someone teach you something like a Quan vortex and be done with it. Find a character and let the person teach you about how to explore that character and the game to the point where you are so comfortable with the character that the brief list of fundamentals I mentioned earlier are second nature against most of the cast. Assuming you're getting a rag tag bunch of teachers who play various characters, make sure you ask about what they think of the matchups against your character and stay active with your related TYM character threads so you can discover/contribute to the dirt people find.

I remember a time where I would go to an arcade and get stomped for all of my quarters until I learned. Nothing beats finding your scene. Look for the players and if there isn't a scene make one.

Good Luck,
