Do players/TO's know about char select button checks?

If you press Y when selecting your character and go to edit presets, you can map your buttons and select your options. I'm just wondering if people know this. I would assume this is common knowledge, but recently I've heard commentators complain about players button checking on stream, but I've heard nobody mention that they could do it upon selecting their characters.
If there something wrong with character select screen button checking?

It's also about getting comfortable on the setup and monitor.
The rematch pause function is pretty fast.
Also, I call buttons in this game 1 2 3 and 4, not front punch back punch front kick back kick.

Yeah most people map their buttons but then still want to do a button check because they want to make sure they are right and also see if the monitor is laggy at all.

I do a button check in character select AND actually testing them. Forever King Jr is a great example for why at TCW. He was checking buttons and the controller he was using the 3 button I believe wasn't consistently working. He would have never known that unless he physically tested it. This is why I test them physically, you never know when your controller will malfunction but if it CAN be avoided, why not take the extra time? The long combo checks are not something I condone though, holds up the tournament and is extremely selfish.

Of course they know but double checking never hurts, especially if you're playing at an important event: if you were to lose the grand final at Combo Breaker for a controller issue I can guarantee you'd get quite salty to say the least.

I believe GBS banned button checks, but once more, every stream that I have watched, commentators have been annoyed by button checks. Even in usf4 SEAM, commentators were pointing how long button checks were going on, another game with button mapping at the character select screen.
So what is the future of button checks? The main arguments are that they take too long and that viewers don't want to see them. I didn't have a problem with them until they kept getting pointed out during streams.

Win At All Cost
People complaining need to keep their thoughts to themselves. If I'm competing and theres thousands of dollars on the line of course I'm going to take a single minute to check my buttons. Why take the risk of giving my opponent a free win? To please a bunch of hyperactive stream monsters? If you want a good show, let players make sure they're ready to give you one.

Commentaters should do less complaining and more commentating.

Mapping your buttons isn't the same as checking them. If MKX had VF5's button checking tool, we wouldn't have to start a match to actually see if the left, right and diagonals of the controller are working properly.

^every fighting game should have this

But in order to map the button, it has to be pressed; wouldn't that confirm functionality?
What separates Vf5's tool vs what Mkx and Usf4 have implemented? I have vf5, but never changed my buttons.

VF5 lets you go into a test screen that gives you a visual representation of your stick and buttons. When you press up, down, left and right on your controller, the stick on the screen moves around. Also, the buttons light up on screen as you push them. This lets you check if your directions are working properly and if your buttons are registering multiple presses in succession.

Not all of us play just one game. We bounce around from Capcom, anime and NRS games. Going from MKX to SF or injustice and vice versa takes awhile, because you have to adapt to the different game mechanics quickly. That is what you are doing during button checks. You are trying to jog that muscle memory. Familiarizing yourself to the different walk speed and different cancel windows, remembering you have to press block as opposed to just holding back. You can't do that at the button map screen.

As Chemist touched on, if I haven't played all day or have been playing other games an in-match button check helps me acclimate. And with MKXs rematch option it doesn't add all that much time.

Even in usf4 SEAM, commentators were pointing how long button checks were going on, another game with button mapping at the character select screen.
Street Fighter's setup is flawed though unless you want anything besides standard macros. You can't assign macros other than 3P and 3K and can't unassign buttons. And possibly worst of all, if a different macro (say Red Focus) is assigned to a button you'll just see that 3P or 3K is "Unassigned" and not know the button is actually assigned to something else.

gotta take it to make it
Setting your buttons at the character select screen is not enough to confirm whether or not your buttons are working properly.

but if you press the button, wouldn't you see that it was functioning? Because if it wasn't you would press 1 at Front Punch, and nothing would happen.
